二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   “Smombies”— people walking while staring at their smartphones are very real and a growing cause for concern. To let people pay more attention to their surroundings to avoid serious accidents, government in a small German town has come up with a more positive solution — embedding (嵌入) traffic lights in the pavement to make them noticed by people always looking down at their phones.

The safety measure was taken. Authorities in Augsburg decided to act, installing ground level traffic lights at two tram (电车) stops last Tuesday. The lights flash red when a tram is coming, or when the regular traffic light turns red. “We realized that the normal traffic light isn't in the line of sight of many pedestrians these days,” said Tobias Hermes, a city official. “So we decided to have an extra set of lights — the more lights we have, the more people are likely to notice them.”

Some Augsburg people appear to be quite happy with the idea. “I think it makes sense,” Jack Smith said, speaking to The Augsburg Alleghenies. “One always sees young people these days running over red lights. This makes it more obvious that you need to stop.”

Others, however, found the need for ground traffic lights unnecessary and even frightening. “I find it scary that smartphone users are so engrossed that they need to install lights in the ground so that they notice the tram coming,” one person told the local paper.

But do this kind of pavement-embedded lights actually work? One interviewed teenager believes not really. “To be honest, I didn't even notice it,” he told The Augsburg Alleghenies. "Maybe it’d be useful at night, but I didn’t realize it was there until just now.”

1From the text we can know that smombies refer to people

A.who are fond of walking.

B.who look at phones while walking.

C.whose smartphones are embedded traffic lights.

D.who pay more attention to their surroundings.

2What can we learn from Tobias Hermes?

A.The tram is the main cause of traffic accidents.

B.The tram's lights should flash while running.

C.Many people can't see normal traffic lights clearly.

D.The pavement-embedded lights are easier to be seen.

22、Once upon a time, we were all question-asking experts. We started asking our parents numerous questions as kids. By preschool, our inquiries even reached the depths of science, philosophy, and the social order. Where does the sun go at night? Why doesn’t that man have a home like we do? Why do rocks sink but ice floats? 【1】

Why does the child’s urge to ask questions grow inactive in so many adults? An important factor is how the social environments surrounding us change as we age. Schools transform from a place for asking questions to one funded by our ability to answer them. 【2】 And we recognize that society rewards the people who propose to have the answers.

【3】 We can be braver about asking questions in public and encouraging others to pursue their curiosity, too. In that encouragement, we help create an environment where those around us feel safe to ask questions.

When it comes to how we phrase questions, we are advised to open with less sensitive questions, favor follow-up questions, and keep questions open-ended. We can also practice asking questions of and for ourselves by keeping a running list of questions in a journal. 【4】 Finally, we could set aside time to ask absurd questions like “How would you accomplish a week’s work in two hours?” This type of questions forces us to break the boundaries of our comfort zone.

In the world that does not look much as it did years ago, we must ask questions. 【5】 Great questions can open up our capacity to change because they allow us to draw people in, opening them up to sharing knowledge, ideas, and opinions. And they are also our primary means of learning about the world. In short, asking questions is the best way to deepen our understanding of the things that matter to our life. As any child could probably tell us if we asked.

A.Then, at some point, our inquiring desires disappear.

B.It is a high-payoff behavior especially in times of change.

C.The questions we ask depend on our attitudes as well as the situations.

D.But as we grow up, asking questions fills us with worry and self-doubt.

E.As such, one way to renew our inquiring spirit is to change the atmosphere.

F.We learn to sell ourselves on the job market by what we know, not what we don’t.

G.It not only removes the publicity from question asking, but offers us a place to experiment.

23、In terms of teaching, firstly, ChatGPT is like an up-graded version of an intelligent search engine, which greatly improves my efficiency in preparing assessments. For example, I’m currently teaching a Year 4 module Digital Marketing and it’s a very practical module. In the past, I had to spend a lot of time looking for cases and examples related to the course to help students understand it. Now I just need to ask ChatGPT to generate relevant and accurate examples. Secondly, ChatGPT can help improve my teaching. Previously, I often tried to find ways to increase student participation in class, by researching questions, activities, technical tools, as well as methods. However, today I often look to ChatGPT for in-depth advice on this.

In terms of scientific research, given the academic severeness, I actually think ChatGPT can do relatively little at present. The scenes I’ve used ChatGPT for have so far been limited to just a few aspects. Firstly, proof-reading an article. Secondly, summarizing and improving an article. For example, you can import a piece of content and have ChatGPT generate the article’s overall ideas and keywords.

It seems that different universities hold different attitudes toward ChatGPT. The University of Cambridge, for example, allows students to use ChatGPT for purposes other than exams, assignments and papers. Of course, there are plenty of objections.

I think, used in the right way, ChatGPT can be of great help to students in their academic and personal growth. For example, I mentioned using ChatGPT as a smarter search engine and learning tool. ChatGPT can help students review conceptual problems after class and supplement their knowledge. Secondly, students can also use ChatGPT to do more targeted personal pursuits. For example, when applying for a master’s degree, or looking for a job, students can use ChatGPT to conduct mock(模拟)interviews and CV improvements. Note that good questions lead to good answers. Be clear about what you want from this advanced language model and ask questions with a purpose.

24、   Hanging stockings by the chimney with care is one of the most popular Christmas traditions, but many families display theirs without wondering why. No one can be sure when and why the practice started, but some stories give us a clue.

One of the most popular origin tales starts with none other than St. Nicholas — yes, he was a real person. In the third and fourth centuries, St. Nicholas was a bishop in modern-day Turkey who made helping others his life mission, and he caught wind of a family in need.

As the story goes, a single father was raising three daughters but realized he didn’t have enough money to pay their dowries (嫁妆)---and without dowries, they couldn’t get married.

St. Nicholas heard of the family’s dilemma but knew they were too proud to accept handouts. To make sure they didn’t refuse his generosity, he secretly sent them gold at night. Some legends say he dropped gold down the chimney, and the gifts landed in the stockings that were laid by the fire to dry, while others claim Nicholas himself hopped down the chimney. Someone - either the father or the daughters, depending on the version of the tale - caught the bishop in the act and thanked him for his help. The gifts were enough for the daughters to marry and live happily ever after.

St. Nicholas, feast day was on December 6, and eventually, the tradition of leaving gifts in stockings was paired up with Christmas celebrations.

That makes a neat and tidy origin story, but some scholars suggest the stocking tradition might have started even before Christianity in Scandinavian cultures. The Norse god Odin was said to come on Christmas, riding on an eight-legged horse. Children would leave sugar, carrots, and hay in their shoes to feed the mythical horse, and Odin would leave them gifts in return.

We’ll never know whether these stories were true or not, but stockings have a strong foothold in Christmas tradition.

【1】What can we know about St. Nicholas?

A.He was born on December 6.

B.He often sent gold to the poor.

C.He used to hang stocking at night.

D.He liked to help other people.

【2】What does the underlined word "handouts" in paragraph 4 probably mean?

A.Objects made by hand.

B.Documents containing news.

C.Pieces of paper given to students.

D.Things given free to poor people.

【3】What is the purpose of the last paragraph but one?

A.To prove the tale of St. Nicholas is false.

B.To provide a different version of story origin.

C.To prove the Norse god Odin is as generous as St. Nicholas.

D.To provide detailed information about western cultures.

【4】What’s the best title of the text?
