四、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

24、Would you like to live in a city where buildings turn the lights off for you, and selfdriving cars will find the nearest parking space themselves? Although it might sound a little far from you, living in a “smart” city like this could happen sooner than you think.

Great changes have taken place in towns that we have lived in for centuries, while completely new cities are being built. One such place is the city of Songdo. Every home there will have a “telepresence” system(远程遥控系统)—allowing users to control the heating and looks, take part in video meetings, and receive education, health care and government services. Around the city, escalators(自动扶梯) will only move when someone is on them, and offices and schools will all be connected to the system.

The great mind behind Songdo is from the company Cisco. In fact, technology companies around the world such as IBM, Siemens and Microsoft are already in the business.

About 75% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, so cities will need to be more modern to deal with the coming problems. “Making cities smarter is one way out, and I think this will in turn make cities greener,” said Dan Hill, head of a research company.

1According to the text, living in a “smart” city ______________.

A. is not a green way B. will be far from you

C. will soon become true D. is completely impossible

2What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A. A city of the future. B. A meeting in Songdo.

C. develop his own company D. solve the cities' coming problems

5Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

A. Future Education B. Smart Cities

C. Famous Companies D. Government Services

25、   Research suggests that at least 64% of people now spend up to four hours daily of spare time in front of a screen. Just as TV watching has been linked to higher chances of being fat and getting diseases, this extra sedentary time is bad news for our health.

1.Choose outdoor activities over technology

When you’re at home, make it a rule that you can’t be online if the sun is shining. Instead, you have to go for a walk, ride a bike, swim or get some other kind of healthy physical activity for at   least an hour before you can pull out your phone or tablet, or take a seat at the computer. This rule should be fit for everyone in your family.

2. Limit social media use

Social networks have changed computer and mobile use for people of all ages. Whether it’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat, limit the amount of time you spend on social media. Avoid aimless browsing (浏览) and give your time online a purpose: research holidays or catch up on the news of the day. Then log off.

3.Save time for reading

Challenge (挑战) yourself to read at least 30 pages of a great book before you check your computer or mobile phone. Pick the right reading material and you’ll soon find you’ve discovered an enjoyable pastime.

4.Create projects for yourself

It’s amazing how much you can achieve when you’re not glued to (长时间盯着) a screen. Do a  list of one-hour evening projects. Some suggestions are organizing kitchen cupboards, cleaning your bedroom. Then try to do one each evening.

27、   One morning when I was 11, I explored the town’s abandoned (废弃的) round grain barn. I found a chained sliding door that was wide enough for me to pass through.

Inside, there was a heavy smell of dead mice in the dark. After my eyes adjusted, I noticed a shaft (通风管道) that rose all the way to the top of the barn. On one side was a one-man elevator with a long rope and roller.

I stepped onto the platform, gave the rope a drag and the elevator began sliding up the shaft, but stopped halfway. After a brief panic attack, I noticed there were some holes formed a ladder (阶梯). For reasons known only to an 11-year-old, I decided it would be better to go up than down. So, with shaking hands, I began climbing up.

After what seemed like forever, I reached the top of the shaft. I stood up and found nothing of interest. It was just an empty room with a ladder leading up to the roof. I tried my best to climb all the way up but it was very difficult. There was too much heavy dust. When dust was blown, I even couldn’t breathe. I didn’t know how long it took but luckily I climbed up, popped the straw roof and saw a bright blue sky.

I suddenly realized the dust and powder pouring out of the top could draw attention. So when the dust had settled, I climbed down and slipped out of the chained door. I’m not sure if I was more excited about being alive or about not being caught, but I ran all the way back home.

There’s no place like home

Some people dream of having a home ‘just like the ones in decorating magazines’. That sort of beautifully stylish home may be n1, but for a truly special place to live, why not choose a home unlike any other in the neighbourhood? The unique(独一无二的) houses on these pages challenge people to reconsider what a home is s2 to look like.

Environmentally friendly homes are getting a lot of a3 these days. Earthships, for example, are unusual homes made from materials like mud, straw and reused wood. The designers of earthships combine these natural materials with recycled i4, such as bottles, cans and old tyres. These homes show their belief that, when it comes to saving the environment, ‘if you aren’t part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.’

Additionally many of these homes use wind or solar power. They are designed to collect and recycle water, and the people who live in them often add a greenhouse in which to grow food. As a result, if you live in an earthship, your monthly living costs will d5 to almost zero. For people who want to try one out, the Phoenix Earthship in the US is available as holiday accommodation(住宿).

Shipping containers are now being reused to make a6 type of environmentally friendly home. A number of architects have started changing individual containers into holiday homes. Alternatively they can be combined to make office blocks and blocks of flats, such as those Container City in London, England.

With all of the examples of imaginative homes, it is clear that people no longer need to settle for ordinary living spaces. One thing is sure: people living in homes that look as s7 as these never have to give anyone their address. They can just say, ‘Look for the weird house. You will know it when you see it.’

29、Running for a Dream

I will never forget that November day. It was hotter than normal. This was the day my father and I had waited so long for, because we had been working towards this race for three years. Dozens of familiar faces from church and school flashed across my view. They had come___________ me. I saw worry and excitement on my father’s face. Then the race began!

For the first two and a half miles, I felt___________ . I had never before been so ready for something. The weeks leading up to the race were filled with controlled ___________ and a strict diet. My friends hadn’t seen me in weeks, but they understood the sacrifice required to make my dream a reality. As in all of my races, I didn’t ___________ out in the front. I loved the pleasure of passing people as my strength overtook (赶上) their premature (提早的) speed.

Then without warning, my strength began to decrease. Neck and neck with one of my greatest competitors, I could see the finish line. I had begun the final dash(最后冲刺) into glory when my knees became weak and my legs gave way. Nothing I could do would make them _________ my weight.

I watched as runners rushed by me. Although I knew my dreams of victory were destroyed, I had to finish the race. However, my legs hurt badly. With all of the___________ left in me, I got on my hands and knees and crawled(爬), inch by inch, across the finish line. Voices, both___________ and familiar, cheered me on. They gave me the courage to keep going until the very end.

The doctors were there in seconds, but my eyes searched the crowd for him. There was only one person I wanted to talk to. I whispered, “I’m so sorry, Dad. I’m so sorry I___________ you.” He looked at me, saying, “You could never disappoint me. Sometimes these things just happen. All that matters is that you did your best.”

“But we worked so___________. What about our dream?” He reached over for my hand and said, “Don’t you know that you are my dream and it has come true?”

It wasn’t long before my running shoes were back on, marking a ______________ path for my journey. I learned that all of the miles, the tears, the sweat, and the pain my dad   and I experienced together were not for a race. What I realized, though, was that to him, I was the greatest prize he had ever won.
