26、It’s midnight already, but the lights in Shi Guang’s dormitory are still on. He and three other students are sitting back to back. They’re all wearing earphones and staring at a computer screen, talking to each other only in words like “charge” or “retreat”. Chen Jiasheng, 22, a senior majoring in electrical engineering and automation at Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics, is a gaming team leader. “ Online gaming is not just about gaming, it’s a community in which we communicate with each other using our avatars(化身),” said Chen. For university students like Chen, online gaming has become more than a fashion – it’s part of life and a way of socializing.
A 2012 research report on online gamers in China released by 17173.com, the country’s leading game information portal, supports this concept. According to the report, university students aged between 19 and 25 make up 58 percent of online gamers, and the proportion is rising every year. “Many of my friends spend more time hanging out in online gaming worlds than in reality,” said Wang Jiaming, 21, a junior law major at China University of Political Sciences and Law. “Personally I feel more powerful in virtual worlds than in real life. I’m more confident.”
According to Zhang Quan, 20, a student in the second year economics major at Renmin University of China, one of the distinguishing features of online games compared with offline games is the gaming experience. Offline games test a gamer’s skill at using a keyboard to beat rivals. “Online games are technically more accessible as you don’t have to master these skills,” said Zhang.
But most online games are based on avatars controlled by another human – they are unavoidably more tricky and unpredictable by a computer. “On the surface we are playing games, but actually it’s real people we are dealing with,” added Zhang. “The only difference is that in these games we communicate with each other in different settings, like wars, magic battles and fantasy worlds.”
By engaging in this interactive gaming experience, gamers become team players and promote their social skills. Chen has even made friends by playing in a team with strangers online. “We coordinated our movements and cooperated with each other to win a battle in the cyberspace. The game was virtual but the brotherhood was real. Most of us are good friends in real life,” said Chen.

The Effects of a Warmer World Are Visible in Animals’ Bodies
For humans, adapting to climate change will mostly be a matter of technology. More air conditioning, better-designed houses and bigger flood defences may help mitigate the effects of a warm world. 【1】 In a paper published in Trends in Ecology & Evolution, a team led by Sara
Ryding, a phd candidate at Deakin University, in Australia, shows that is already happening. Climate change is already altering the bodies of many animal species, giving them bigger beaks, limbs and ears. In some species of Australian parrot, for instance, beak size has increased by between 4 % and 10 % since 1871.
All that dovetails (吻合)nicely with evolutionary theory. “Allen’s rule”, named for Joel Asaph Allen, who suggested it in 1877, holds that warm-blooded-animals in hot places tend to have larger appendages (附属物) than those in less hot regions.【2】 For example, Fennec foxes, which are native to the Sahara desert, have strikingly large ears, especially compared with their Arctic cousins.
Ms Ryding examined museum specimens, comparing their bodies to those of their modern counterparts. She is not the first researcher to take that approach. 【3】 All sorts of other factors, from changes in prey to the evolving reproductive preferences of males or females, might possibly have been driving the changes. Her team combined data from different species in different places.Since they have little in common apart from living on a warming planet, she says, climate change is the most reasonable explanation.
【4】 Researchers have already seen changes in the geographical range of many species, from insects to fish. Another evolutionary rule-of-thumb, Bergmann’s rule, holds that animals in hotter places tend to have smaller bodies, another way to boost the ratio between surface area and volume. Other animals may alter their behaviour as well as their bodies, such as by seeking shelter at hot times of the day.
Studying a broader range of animals will help firm up exactly what is happening. Much of Ms Ryding’s data concern birds, with less information available for other taxa (类群). But it seems clear that the world of the future is not just going to be hotter than humans are used to.【5】
A.And there are other ways to adapt, too.
B.The animals living in it will look different, too.
C.Larger wings are heavier, and bigger legs cost more energy to grow.
D.Animals will have to rely on changing their bodies or their behaviour.
E.But it is hard to prove that climate change was the cause of an anatomical (结构上的) change.
F.Since any evolutionary adaptation comes with trade-offs, it is unclear how far the process might go.
G.Such adaptations boost an animal's surface area relative to its body volume, helping it to shed excess heat.
29、 The streets of Seville, Spain, are lined with over 48,000 attractive orange trees, producing over 16,500 tons of fruit every winter. Though that gives Seville the honor of being Europe's top orange-producing city, the fruit is too sour to be consumed fresh. Some of the produce is used to make jam, but most ends up in landfills. However, that may change soon thanks to an inventive idea to use the oranges to produce clean energy.
The pilot program is being launched by the local government and parks department in cooperation with Emasesa, Seville's water supply division. Juice obtained from 38.6 tons of oranges will be left to ferment (发酵)in an existing biogas facility. The gas released from the fermented liquid will be collected and used to drive a generator to produce clean power. The officials estimate the test run will generate about 1,500 kWh of energy — enough to run one of Emasesa's water purification plants. They say, "It's not just about saving money. The oranges are a problem for the city, and we're producing added value from waste.”
If successful, by 2023, the city hopes to recycle all the oranges and add the electricity generated back to its power system. In trial runs, 1000 kilos of oranges produced 50 kWh of clean energy — enough to satisfy the daily electricity needs of five homes.
“Emasesa is now a role model in Spain for sustainability and the fight against climate change," Espadas Cejas, mayor of Seville, said in the press conference announcing the pilot program. "This project will help us reach our targets for reducing emissions (排放),energy self-sufficiency, and the circular economy"
The latest attempt is among the many initiatives being carried out across Spain to achieve the country's goal of switching its electricity system to renewable sources by 2050 — and if everything goes according to plan, folly decarbonizing its economy shortly after that.

31、短文填空
In January, eight gorillas (大猩猩) at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, in California, became the first great apes to test positive (阳性的) for COVID-19. “There was an immediate concern,” said Nadine Lamberski, the chief 【1】 (保护) and wildlife health officer at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. “We want to 【2】 (尽我们的职责) and take all measures to make sure that won’t happen again.”
So Lamberski made a decision. In February, she gave nine other great apes an experimental COVID-19 vaccine. Those nine became the first zoo animals in the United States to get the vaccine. Since then, the vaccine has been shipped out to zoo animals in 27 states. Lamberski got the COVID-19 vaccine from Zoetis, a company that makes medications for animals. 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
“It’s not looking too good, darling, I think you’d better pack a few things and go to your mother’s place. And you’d better take Rosie and Monty with you.”
Putting down the phone, Sara sighed. Tomorrow was her husband Tony’s birthday. She had planned to cook him a nice meal and then surprise him with the new mountain bike she’d bought for him. If she went to her mother’s house, Tony wouldn’t get his present for days.
However, her mother’s house was the best place to be right now. Being on higher land, it would be safe from the floods. It had been raining heavily for almost two weeks and the river near Sara and Tony’s house was rising higher and higher all the time. Tony and others from the village had spent the last two days putting sandbags along the side of the river to stop it from overflowing. Now they feared that their hard work had been useless and soon the whole valley would be flooded.
Sara dressed baby James in warm clothes and collected the things she would need for him over the next few days. She put the lead on the dog and went in search of Monty, the cat. It took her a long time, but eventually she found him safe and warm under the covers on her bed. She placed him in his cat basket and took him into the kitchen where James and the dog, Rosie, were waiting.
Just as she was reaching for the car keys, Sarah heard a sound like the noise bath water makes when you pull out the plug. She looked at the backdoor, water was flowing in underneath. Turning around, she saw dirty brown water fountaining out of the drain and filling the sink. Realizing that they were trapped by the flood and it became impossible for her to drive out, quickly she put James into her backpack and pulled onto her back. Calling to Rosie, she picked up the cat basket and ran to the front of the house and out into the front garden, where the car was parked.
