二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、I have a friend who hates banks with a special passion. “A bank is just a store like a candy store or a grocery store,” he says. “The only difference is that a bank’s goods happen to be money, which is yours in the first place. If banks were required to sell wallets and money belts, they might act less like churches.”

I was thinking about my friend the other day when I walked into a small branch bank on the West Side. It was lunchtime and I came to open a checking account. The only officer on duty was a fortyish black man with short pressed air, a pencil mustache, and a neatly pressed brown suit. Everything about him suggested a carefully dressed authority. He was standing across a small counter from a young white boy who was wearing a V-necked sweater. I thought I was especially aware of the boy because he looked more like someone from a prep (预备) school than a customer in a West Side bank.

The boy continued to hold my attention because of what happened next. He was holding an open savings-account book and wearing an expression of disappointment. “But I don’t understand. I opened the account myself, so why can’t I withdraw any money?” the boy said, his voice breaking.

“I know it is, but those are the rules. I’ve already explained to you that a fourteen-year-old is not allowed to withdraw money without a letter from his parents,” the officer explained patiently.

Suddenly I noticed the savings book had a series of small deposits (存款) and withdrawals. Then I questioned the officer, “How do you explain that?” I zeroed in on the officer. “Why did you let him withdraw money before, but not now?” He looked annoyed. “Because the tellers were not aware of his age before and now they are. It’s really very simple.” I turned to the boy with a shrug. “You’re really getting cheated,” I said. “You ought to get your parents to come here and protest.” The boy looked destroyed. Silently, he put his savings book in a rear-pocket and walked out of the bank.

The officer turned to me. “You know,” he said, “you really shouldn’t have interfered.” I couldn’t believe what he was saying. “We were informed this morning that some neighborhood bully has been shaking down (敲诈) this boy for more than a month. The guy was forcing him to take money out every week and hand it over. The poor kid was apparently too scared to tell anyone. Anyway, the police are on the case and they’ll probably make an arrest today.”

“You mean there is no rule about being too young to withdraw money from a savings account?”

“Not that I ever heard of. Now, sir, what can we do for you?”

27、   Some losers become winners, while others stay as losers. When people fail, they don’t become losers instantly. They become losers as soon as they start to victimize themselves.1 For example, they often tell themselves and others things like “If I were young, I’d have got this”, or “If they’d given me more opportunities, things would have been different”. But if they’re honest, they’ll admit that these are the things they say to justify (证明……有理) their failures. Failure is failure. Actually, the reason why they failed was that they failed to use the failure as a way of learning and improving themselves.

It’s natural for you to think back to past failures and use them as evidence that you’ll never succeed. 2 Keep your dream alive and do all you can to get there. There will always be roadlocks, but the key is to overcome the problems. Don’t complain, and don’t buy into your limiting beliefs. 3 Namely, think of it as a chance life gives you to help you realize something.

4 For example, realize that each journey to success will always have its ups and downs. When the downs occur, step back and keep your eye on the bigger picture because those downs are usually followed by wonderful ups. 5 If you want to move on from your down times, don’t make giving up an option. No matter how much you feel you’re struggling, these are the moments that present the necessary learning curve(曲线) you need to achieve your dream.

A.Avoid drowning in the negativity that failure can bring.

B.They look for excuses for something negative in their abilities.

C.Also you must realize that no one really cares about your failures.

D.Instead, use each bump in the road as a chance to learn something.

E.However, this only reduces your chances of achieving your dreams.

F.Determination, learning and improving is the real recipe for success.

G.If you want to succeed after failures, start to think like a successful person.

28、Back in September, I took a small team from Motor Trend to see the Tesla Cybertruck. Tesla told us that we were the first outsiders, and the only newspaper to see the vehicle. So it’s fun for me to disclose how some of us reacted after seeing it for the first time.

Christian Seabaugh, Kim Reynolds, Mark Williams, Sean Holman, and I spent hours with the Tesla’s design team on a warm Friday afternoon, at Tesla’s design studio in Hawthorne, California.

When we left the studio and walked back to our car at the parking lot, everyone was quiet, lost in thought. We remained absolutely silent until we pulled out onto a busy street and saw regular cars and trucks, in traffic.

I was the first one to break the ice, “Can you imagine how crazy it will look when that truck is on the road, with regular cars?”

And with that, my colleagues unburdened themselves. Here are some choice thoughts.

“As a traditional truck person, I was dumbstruck when I walked in. What is that? Origami? A military vehicle or SUV? I wonder how will you see out of it? Wait, where’s the bed? I am still too surprised to think. I need a shower, a cigarette or a nap, in no particular order,” said Sean Holman.

“My first thought after entering the design studio was that the only thing missing in the space was anything remotely looking like what I would consider a Tesla truck. Nothing else but the military-styled video game concept in the center of the floor, “ said Mark Williams.

“I’m impressed by how far Tesla was willing to go away from their existing design language. It is a high-risk design. It will dominate the conversation when it appears, and get good presale orders, but I wonder for how long?” said Kim Reynolds.

”When I first looked at the Tesla truck, my first thought was that I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Are they images!? Wow, it’s really beautiful,“ said Christian Seabaugh.

What is your reaction to Tesla’s Cybertruck? Love it? Hate it? Will you buy it?

【1】Which of the following best explains ”dumbstruck" underlined in paragraph 6?

A.Shocked.

B.Scared.

C.Worried

D.Excited.

【2】What does the Tesla Cybertruck most probably look like?

A.An ugly toy.

B.A military car.

C.A traditional truck.

D.A foldable bed.

【3】What does Christian Seabaugh think of the truck?

A.Amazing.

B.Ugly.

C.Unpractical.

D.Powerful.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.The Investment Risks in Tesla

B.Our First Impressions of Cybertruck

C.My First Visit to Tesla’s Design Studio

D.The Design Problems With Cybertruck

29、   When a fire broke out at Notre Dame Cathedral (巴黎圣母院) in April 2019, people across the globe watched in despair as smoke rose from one of the world's most famous buildings. 1Several museums, palaces and other cathedrals have been damaged or destroyed by fire. Without proper protection measures, fires will continue to destroy them.2

Recognize the challenge of protecting cultural buildings.

Often built decades or centuries ago, many cultural buildings are constructed with flammable (易燃的) materials and the articles within them are also composed of such materials. 3 Thus many modern fire protection measures are viewed as damage. The absence of these measures planted seeds of ruin.

Find out proper protection methods.

These buildings and their contents are very sensitive to smoke, humidity and dust. They require specialized methods that could cause little damage. Meanwhile, some stone structures, which trap heat and smoke, make it difficult for firefighters to get to the source of the flame.4One of them is fire compartmentation (防火分区). It uses fire wall barriers to help limit the spread of fire, which will protect the buildings from burning without damaging them.

5

Some countries have installed fire protection equipment but can't take action soon enough. Given this, the Brazilian government completed a project to adopt advanced electrical waning system and to inform firefighters of fires in no time, which would urge them to take immediate action to stop the fire spreading.

A.Take action quickly.

B.Improve the protection equipment

C.Sadly, it was not a specific example through the years.

D.Fortunately, firefighters came just in time to put out the fire.

E.So here are some suggestions to help save them from burning.

F.Besides, many buildings are under repairs and need to keep their original features.

G.However, some traditional strategies of fire protection for such buildings are effective.

On a broiling afternoon when the men were away at work and all the women napped, I moved through majestic depths of silences, silences so immense I could hear the corn 1. Under these silences there was a / an orchestra of natural music playing notes no city child would ever hear. A certain cackle from the henhouse meant we had gained an egg. The creak of a porch swing told of a momentary breeze blowing across my grandmother’s yard. As I 2 along a mossy bank to surprise a frog, a 3splash told me the quarry had spotted me and slipped into the stream. Wandering among the sleeping houses, I learned that tin roofs crackle under the power of the sun, and when I tired and came back to my grandmother’s house, I padded into her dark cool living room, lay 4 on the floor, and listened to the hypnotic beat of her pendulum clock on the wall ticking the meaningless hours away.

I was enjoying the luxuries of a rustic nineteenth-century boyhood, but for the women Morrisonville life had few 5. Their lives were hard, endless, dirty labor.

For baths, laundry, and dishwashing, they hauled buckets of water from a spring at the foot of a hill. To heat it, they chopped kindling to fire their wood stoves. They boiled laundry in tubs, scrubbed it on washboards until knuckles were 6, and wrung it out by hand. Ironing was a business of lifting heavy metal weights heated on the stove top.

They scrubbed floors on hands and knees, thrashed rugs with carpet beaters, killed and plucked their own chickens, baked bread and parties, grew and conned their won vegetables, patched the family’s clothing on treadle-operated sewing machines, 7before the men to start the stove for breakfast and pack lunch pails, polished the chimneys of kerosene lamps, and even found time to tend the flowers that grew around every house. By the end of a summer day a Morrisonville woman had toiled like a serf.

At sundown the men drifted back from the fields exhausted and 8. They scrubbed themselves in enamel basins and, when supper was eaten, climbed up onto the porch to watch the night arrive. Presently the women 9 them, and the twilight music of Morrisonville began.

The swing creaking , rocking chairs 10 on the porch planks, voices murmuring approval of the sagacity of Uncle Irvey as he quietly observed for probably the ten-thousandth time in his life, “A man works from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done.”

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

When the Bayside campus of Shekou International School (SIS) are still kept shut because of the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching activities at the school have been resumed(继续) online since Feb. 3rd, 2020.

The school is using popular apps and software for online learning. Video conferencing(视频会议) and office automation are used to help teachers keep track of students’ conditions and communicate with their workmates across the world. Teaching online also offers a new experience to the teachers to update their teaching methods and to step out of their comfort zones.

Staying in Phuket, Thailand, science teacher Riley Laird records videos on a 10-year-old green sea turtle named Marlin and the local turtle sanctuary(收容所) as part of the online classes on ecosystems for Grade 7 students. “I want to connect our learning with the reality. The sanctuary sends us updates on the turtles’ health and progress. They say that Marlin is likely to be released(放生) into the sea in mid-June,” says Laird.

Rebecca Wallace is a Grade 4 teacher at the school, staying in her mother’s home in New York. From 8 p.m. to midnight every day, she starts teaching mathematics and arts to her students living in different time zones. Though teaching nearly around the clock, Wallace says that she is getting to know the students better in terms of their homes, family and even pets.

Greg Smith, head of SIS, names the online teaching period a “new normal” at the school. “Students are now more skillful at using technology than before. They see that communication is the most powerful part of being an effective learner and can use the tools to shrink(缩短) distance and time. The “new normal” will offer more choices for connection to the world and more focus on creating real solutions,” he says.

According to the school, 68% of its students are staying in Shenzhen while 27% of them are staying abroad for the epidemic.

40、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

A brother and sister made their usual hurried pre-Christmas visit to the little farm, where lived their elderly parents with their small herd(群) of horses.

The young folks had fond memories of their childhood here. Everything was perfect except the aging old horse, ‘The Old One'.

Doubtfully, the young folks asked the old couple, “ Why do you not at least get rid of ‘The Old One’?”

The old man looked down at his worn boots, holes in the toes, and replied softly, “We keep her because of love. Nothing else, just love.”

Worried and confused, the young folks wished the old couple a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley.

The old couple shook their heads in sorrow. A tear fell upon their cheeks. How was it that these young folks did not understand the peace of the love that filled their hearts?

Because of the unhappy leave-taking, no one noticed the first spark fall in the bam(马厩). None but the‘ The Old One'.

In a matter of minutes, the bam was full of hungry flames. With a cry of horror and despair, the old couple sank sobbing to the ground, helpless. The bam was in ruins.

The old man turned to his wife, forcing a smile, “We have lost much. Let us gather strength and climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair and pray for our beloved ‘The Old One'”.

The journey up the hill was hard for their old bodies in the steep snow. As they got to the peak of the hill, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy. Amazed and puzzled, he took his wife by the hand and pulled her forward. There, beneath the pine tree was their Christmas gift-The Old One’ lay close to the trunk of the tree, with the entire herd.

Paragraph 1:

As it turned out, the moment ‘The Old One' saw the smoke, she pushed the door and led the horses through it.
