四、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

24、   You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard. At the start they only fight with their fists. But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead!

Of course he isn’t really dead. With any luck he isn’t even hurt. Why? Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains, who crash cars or even catch fire, are professionals. They do this for a living. These men are called stuntmen. That is to say, they perform tricks.

There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress (床垫). Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar! Although their work depends on trick of this kind, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman’s success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is “blown up” in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.

Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get badly injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff (悬崖) a thousand feet high. His parachute (降落伞) failed to open, and he was killed. In spite of all the risks, this is no longer a profession for men only. Men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous action. For nowadays there are stuntwomen, too!

【1】The author wrote Para.1 and Para.2 to lead in a ________.

B.fight

C.job

D.his safety is generally all right

【4】We can infer that ________ from the example in the last paragraph.

A.an accident may happen to a stuntman

B.the stuntman must be too heavy

C.parachutes must be of good quality

D.the cliff might be so dangerous

25、Our government has raised the child limit (限制) for couples from two to three as the country experiences lower birth rates (出生率). For many years, China applied a one-child policy as a way to control the population. But that policy was replaced in 2016 with a two-child limit. That change was to raise the number of births. But birth rates have further decreased (减少) in recent years because the cost of raising children in Chinese cities remains high.

The latest measure to permit three children per family means “to actively deal with the aging population (人口老龄化),” the official Xinhua News Agency reported. The policy includes what the government calls “supportive measures (配套相关措施)” to make it easier for families to have more children. The measures include plans to lower educational costs for families and increase tax and housing support. The government also said it would educate young people “on marriage and love”.

Yifei Li is a sociologist at New York University Shanghai. She said that most families did not plan to have more children in recent years because of “the high costs of raising children in today’s China”. Zhang Xinyu is a 30-year-old mother of one from Zhengzhou in northeastern China. She said another problem was that women carried most of the responsibility for raising children. She added, “I don’t want to have a second child. And a third is even more impossible.”

Cathy and I decided to talk to Vanessa, and Brittany and Brianna decided to talk to Julia. Guess what we discovered? They just wanted to hang out (闲逛) with more friends because they had agreed that would be fun. We all liked the idea and planned to make a new group — a bigger group.
