二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、   Would you eat a six-month-old yogurt? This is a question you may have asked if you read the recent story about a US grocer and his year-long experiment eating expired food.

It started in October 2016, when Scott Nash, founder of the Mom's Organic Market chain of grocery stores, wanted to make a smoothie (果昔). He likes his smoothie with yogurt. As he was at his holiday cabin in Virginia, though, the only pot he had to hand was one he had left behind on his last trip there by accident, six months earlier. He opened it. No bad smell. He decided to take the risk and dumped the yogurt in the smoothie. 'I drank and waited, ' he wrote on his blog. And nothing happened.

The first thing to point out is that Nash is based in the US, where regulations on food dating differ significantly from those in the UK. While British foods carry just one date-either 'use by' or 'best before'– Nash was faced with 'quality guarantee period, use by, best by, sell by, best if used by …' He sells food for a living, and even he doesn't understand the system.

Clearly, this lack of clarity has influence on both the health of the environment and the health of the nation. What you don't eat, you'll end up throwing it away, even if you could have safely eaten it; and what you don't know not to eat could make you sick. A report from the Natural Resources Defense Council and Harvard Law School in 2013 said that 40% of American food goes uneaten each year, and the confusing effect of the US date labeling system is in large part to blame.

1The underlined phrase 'expired food' probably means the food ______.

A.which is fresh

B.which is sour

C.which is not within the quality guarantee period

D.which is not cooked

2What can we learn from para.2?

A.Nash hadn't eaten expired food before October 2016.

B.Nash left the yogurt in the cabin for his experiment.

C.Nash was sure the yogurt would do no harm to him.

D.Nash liked drinking six-month-old yogurt.

3What does Nash think of the US's date labels on food?

A.They are clearer than the UK's.

B.They are more advanced than the UK's.

C.They are confusing to people.

D.They are concrete and helpful to the Americans.

4What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.The date labeled on the bag of food plays an important role in people's health.

B.The food you throw away can do harm to your health if eaten.

C.People often get sick for eating the expired food.

D.The lack of clarity of date labeling system leads to a large amount of waste of food.

27、   Fever, coughing, sore throat… most of us at one time or another have had these symptoms. What causes them?  In fact, many diseases are caused by viruses, including some deadly ones like AIDS, SARS and COVID-19, also known as the novel coronavirus pneumonia, outbreak in China.

What are viruses?  How can viruses cause so much trouble?  Viruses are very small particles (颗粒) which are about one millionth of an inch long. Unlike human cells or bacteria, viruses aren’t living organisms- they can't reproduce on their own. Instead, they invade the cells of living organisms to reproduce, spread and take over.

Virus can infect every living thing- from plants and animal down to the smallest bacteria. For this reason, they are always a potential danger to humans. Viruses lie around our environment all of the time, waiting for a host cell to come along. They can enter our bodies by the nose, mouth, eyes or breaks in the skin. Once inside, they try to find a host cell to infect. For example, HIV, which causes AIDS, attacks the T-cells of the immune system.

But the basic question is, where did viruses first come from? Until now, no clear explanation for their origin exists. "Tracing the origins of viruses is difficult, "Ed Rybicki, a scientist at the university of Cape Town in South Africa, told Scientific American, "because viruses don' t leave fossils and because of the tricks they use to make copies of themselves within the cells they've invaded.”

However, there are three main theories to explain the origin of viruses. First, viruses started as dependent organisms, then became parasites(寄生者)。Second, viruses evolved from pieces of DNA or RNA that "escaped" .from larger organisms. Third, viruses co-evolved with their host cells, which means they existed alongside these cells.

For the time being, these are only theories. The technology and evidence we have today cannot be used to test these theories and identify the most reasonable explanation. Continuing studies may provide us with clearer answers or future studies may find that the answer is even more mysterious than it now appears.

【1】What can we learn about viruses from the text?

A.Viruses are really small living organisms.

B.Viruses have nothing to do with the common cold.

C.Viruses can't reproduce unless they find a host cell.

D.Viruses enter our bodies mainly through our mouths, noses and hair.

【2】Why are viruses always a potential danger to humans?

A.TH most infect all the living things around us.

B.They prefer evolving with the cells in our body.

C.They can copy human's DNA and evolve successfully.

D.They can enter our body far more easily than other living things.

【3】Which of the following might explain the origin of viruses?

A.They evolved from the DNA of animals.

B.They evolved along with their host cells.

C.They evolved from the fossils of large organisms.

D.They evolved from parasites to independent organisms.

【4】What can we conclude from the last paragraph?

A.The author is confident about future virus research.

B.Viruses will become more like bacteria as they evolve.

C.Viruses live longer in human host cells than in animals.

D.It may take a long time to understand the origin of viruses.

28、A European Union program is letting blind people experience famous paintings for the first time. It uses three dimensional (3-D) printing to re-create famous paintings so that they can be touched.

One painting printed with the new technology is Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss.” It is a popular attraction at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, Austria. The painting shows a man and a woman standing in a field filled with flowers. They are wearing gold robes and have their arms around each other. The man leans down to kiss the woman.

Klimt finished the painting in 1908. Until now, people who have trouble seeing can not enjoy the artwork. But thanks to the reproduction (复制品) they can touch the piece and feel the ridges (隆起) and depressions (凹地). Andreas Reichinger started making 3-D versions of artwork in 2010. He said this reproduction was his most difficult project because the couple’s robes are so detailed (精细的).

Dominika Raditsch is a blind museum visitor. She touched the reproduction. As she moved her hands around it, she said, “Exactly, can you see these? There are so many details.” Raditsch said she can imagine what the original painting looks like when she touches the reproduction. “It’s somehow round. You can feel it. It comes with it. And in many places it’s so smooth. And then I think to myself: it probably shines too!” Raditsch said.

The Belvedere is not the only museum to have 3-D versions of its artwork. Some of the pieces at the Prado, in Madrid, Spain, have reproductions that can be touched. But the piece in Vienna has one special part: it is made with widely available 3-D printing technology. That means one day, blind art fans anywhere in the world could download the source files and print the reproductions themselves.

【1】What is “The Kiss”?

A.A European Union project.

B.A popular painting

C.A 3-D technology.

D.A famous museum.

【2】Why did Reichinger say this reproduction was difficult to finish?

A.The painting was reproduced detailedly.

B.The original artwork was made in 1908.

C.Blind art fans can’t download the source files.

D.The 3-D technology is not available.

【3】What is the best title for the text?

A.A European Union Program for Museum Visitors

B.How to Reproduce the World-famous Paintings

C.A Special Museum for Art Fans in Vienna, Austria

D.3-D Printing Lets the Blind Experience Famous Paintings

29、Scientists have discovered how cancer cells use an ‘‘invisibility cloak’’ to hide from the immune system.

They hope understanding the mechanism(机制,原理) will lead to therapies(疗法)in five to ten years that force cancer cells into the firing line of the body’s defenses.

Such a breakthrough would revolutionize the treatment of many deadly cancers, especially those of the breast and lung.

Researchers in Canada found that spreading tumors(肿瘤,肿块)can evade(躲避)the immune system by remodeling(改变…的结构)their DNA “packaging”.

The genetic code within each cell is held within “chromatin(染色质)”, a coiled(圈状的) structure made from lines of DNA wrapped around proteins.Because of chromatin, more than a meter of DNA can be squeezed inside a cell nucleus.

Recently scientists have learned that the chromatin proteins, called histones(组蛋白), have a code of their own which can influence the control of genes.

Professor Wilfred Jefferies and his colleagues found that some cancer cells have the ability to change this “histone code”.

By doing so,they remove the molecular(分子的)“tags” on cells that the immune system relies on to recognize cancer.

Without these tags, cancer cells are invisible to the immune system and can multiply and spread freely.

“This discovery begins to address the mysteries of how cancer hides from the immune system and spreads--it helps explain 20 years of observation in the field,” he said, “It may offer whole new ways for therapies.”

“The invisibility mechanism operates across a range of malignancies(恶性肿瘤) including cancers. But it is particularly active in breast and lung cancers,” the professor said.

He believes within five to 10 years the findings may lead to new therapies that force cancer cells to ‘‘drop the cloak of invisibility’’ and make themselves immune system targets.

【1】What’s the significance of the new discovery of cancer cells’ mechanism?

A.It may help deeply understand how cancer cells develop.

B.It may make various cancers completely curable.

C.It may result in many new ways to the treatment of cancers.

D.It may help people improve body’s immune system.

【2】From the passage we know that at present time________.

A.the immune system cannot wipe out the cancer cells effectively

B.the immune system cannot recognize the cancer cells rightly

C.the immune system is weak in defending against the cancer cells

D.the cancer cells can pretend to be other normal cells

【3】How does the immune system tell the cancer cells from the other normal cells?

A.By a coiled structure of DNA.

B.By remodeling their DNA packaging.

C.By the molecular tags on cells.

D.By an invisibility cloak.

【4】What do you think is the first step to fight against cancer cells?

A.To remove the ability of cancer cells changing histone code.

B.To improve the functions of people’s immune system.

C.To develop new immune system able to recognize cancer cells.

D.To help people understand the dangers of various cancer cells.

【5】From the passage we can infer that________.

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 1 into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 2. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 3. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.

However, instead of finding the holy man, our hero entered a room and saw a great deal of activity: merchants coming and going, people chatting in the corners, a band playing sweet music, and there was a table with different kinds of delicious food on it. The wise man talked to everybody, and the young man had to wait for two hours until it was time for him.

The wise man listened attentively to the reason for the boy’s visit, but told him that at that moment he did not have the time to explain to him the secret of happiness. He offered his suggestion that the young man take a walk around his castle and come hack in two hours' time.

"However, I want to ask you a favor," he added, handing the boy a teaspoon, in which he poured two drops of oil. "While you walk, carry this spoon and don’t let the oil spill(溢出).

Embarrassed, the young man admitted that he had seen nothing. His only concern was not to spill the drops of oil the wise man had given him.

41、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

A class pet can be an invaluable experience for elementary school children. The pet can teach responsibility, build a connection to the classroom, serve as a motivator, and be something for the children to love. If the teacher is willing to take on the added responsibility of caring for an animal in addition to all of the children in the classroom, a class pet can be a wonderful addition to a class.

Many factors need to be taken into consideration when choosing a class pet. It cannot be too big, as classrooms generally have limited space. Cost should also be considered since the teacher will likely have to pay for the pet, its food and its habitat. It must also be somewhat hardy (耐寒的). Each particular type of animal has its advantages and disadvantages, and a teacher must weigh these and make a decision about which one is right for his or her class.

Birds are physically more delicate (娇养) than many other animals. They will not survive in drafts (气流) and need a somewhat regulated temperature in their environment. Many birds are quite social and do best with other birds or when being handled routinely by people who can be appropriate with them. Young children are not likely to have the skill to handle a bird without harming it, making it a poor choice for a class pet.

Some reptiles are beautiful to look at but are delicate, afraid of cold, light sensitivity or poisonous and shouldn’t be handled by children. Others are more hardy but require expensive habitats. Most snakes eat rats and mice, which may be a frightening thing for small children to witness.

A hardy fish, such as a betta, is a good low-cost option for a class pet. They are obviously not huggable or able to be caught by children. Besides, they are inexpensive, have relatively long life spans, and can be kept in a simple fish bowl.
