26、 Ice-skating athlete Alysa Liu is no stranger to breaking records. In 2016, the then 10-year-old became the youngest figure skating(花滑)champion in U.S. history. In 2018, at the age of 12, Liu became the youngest to compete in, and win, the U.S. junior championships. That same year, she was also the youngest to land a triple axel (三圈半跳)in an international competition.
On January 25, 2019, the skater made history once again as the youngest-ever national figure skating champion at the Geico U.S. Women’s Figure Skating Championships held in Detroit, Michigan. The record before was held by Tara Lipinski in 1997 when she was 15.
At the championships, things were going well for defending U.S. champion Bradie Tennell, who was in the lead following the short program on January 24. But things changed the following day when Tennell had a series of setbacks(挫折),first stepping out of a triple loop and then falling during a triple lutz attempt. Meanwhile, Liu, who was in second place and had already impressed the judges with a perfect triple axel in the short program, gave a perfect free skate performance.
When asked about her amazing performance, Liu said, "I was just happy that I beat my personal record, and I did a clean long program." Another thing the young champion was happy about? A trip to Disneyland for Liu and her family. "It’s so much fun," said the 13-year-old.
Liu fell in love with ice skating during her first lesson at the Oakland Ice Center. The then five-year-old showed such a natural gift that Laura Lipetsky, a former national competitor who has taught Liu ever since, asked her father, Arthur Liu, to send her to private lessons.
Unfortunately, Liu won’t take part in the 2019 World Figure Skating Championships in Japan because of the age requirement of 15. However, that doesn’t appear to affect her. She says, "I’m not too worried about that part because I get more time to work on my jumps, skating skills and just trying to learn more."

27、Maggie had never experienced an earthquake before, only prepared for it. As long as she could remember, preparing for an earthquake was routine(常规的) at school. Her family as well had made plans in the event of a natural disaster. Earthquakes are so much more common on the West Coast of the United States.
Today Maggie was home alone. Maggie knew her mom would be driving home on the busy freeway, thinking about preparing supper for Maggie’s dad. Maggie’s dad would arrive at the airport. He was coming home from a two-week business trip.
Maggie arrived home from school at the regular time. She was taking some biscuits from the kitchen cupboard, when she felt it. First just a tremor(微震), then the violent shaking. Maggie quickly ran under the large, wooden table in the dining room. The sounds of breaking glass and the crashing(坠落声) of many things were frightening. But the table remained undamaged, and Maggie hid herself in fear.
After what seemed like a century the earthquake appeared to be over. Maggie could hear the sound of water rushing below her in the basement. The smell of natural gas was present in the air. Maggie knew where the main water valve(阀门) was located. Dad had shown her where it was and how to turn it off. Slowly and carefully she came out from under the table. The once tidy home was now almost unrecognizable. As Maggie reached the open basement door she could see the steps were still in good condition. 28、Scholarship Application Tips in 2019 for college students
• Before you apply
1. Work hard to get good grades. Don’t sweat about one bad grade, but always try to do your best.
2. Get involved, and stay involved, in out-of-class activities. Sports, clubs, drama, bands and orchestras — these often count toward a student’s overall scholarship application evaluation. The same goes for paid (or unpaid) work experience.
3. Begin your scholarship research early — by your sophomore (大学二年级) or junior year of high school, if possible. Make special notes of application deadlines, as they can vary from late summer to late spring.
4. Apply for as many scholarships as you are eligible (符合条件的) for — several smaller scholarships can add up to a lot of money.
• During the application process
1. Read the supplementary (补充的) materials that come with scholarship application forms to better understand the program’s focus (community service, subject interest). Try to answer the questions with the focus area in mind.
2. Answer questions as they are asked. Don’t go off topic.
3. If there is a financial section to the application, make sure you get accurate and complete information from all appropriate sources to ensure your eligibility.
4. Take your time. Write down everything you can think of for each question, then set the application aside for a day so you can look everything over again before you send it off.
5. Don’t wait until the last minute to complete your application, especially if you are applying online. Computer systems can get blocked with the large volume of applicants hoping to submit (上交) their qualifications during the last few days and hours before a deadline.
6. If a third party has to complete part of your application, such as providing a letter of recommendation, make sure you ask them early on and remind them as often as necessary to ensure they provide you with the necessary materials.
7. Last but not least, review your application with your parents to make sure you haven’t left out any important details.
