四、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

24、

If you live in Shanghai, you might have taken a “lesson” in sorting garbage. As China’s first city to carry out strict regulations on garbage sorting and recycling, Shanghai requires its residents to sort garbage into four categories, namely recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. If people fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined (罚款) up to 200 yuan.

Since the regulation took effect, the amount of total daily waste in Shanghai has been reduced by an average of 15,500 tons, dropping 26 percent from the end of 2018, while the average daily weight of recyclables hits 4,500 tons, five times higher than the end of 2018, according to the Shanghai Landscaping and City Appearance Administrative Bureau. “Proper waste sorting protects the environment and saves natural resources.” said Deng Jianping, director of the bureau. “Led by the central government, Shanghai is making efforts to develop long-term solutions to garbage management.”

However, there have also been some problems. Some people complained that it is difficult to deal with wet garbage, as they are asked to remove wet garbage from its bag when dumping (倾倒). According to the sorting rules, the wet garbage must go in the wet waste bin and the bag must go in the dry waste bin. This separation is necessary, as it ensures that the wet garbage will decompose properly and become useful organic (有机的) waste, the bureau said. Plastic bags can affect this process. Some people in Shanghai are instead using paper bags that can biodegrade (生物降解) or plastic containers that can be washed and reused, according to Xinhua.

More cities are introducing similar garbage sorting regulations. By the end of 2020, garbage-sorting systems will be established (建立) in 46 cities in our country, including Beijing and Shenzhen, People’s Daily reported.

1People in Shanghai are asked to sort their garbage into _______.

A.recyclable, dry, harmful and kitchen waste

2According to Paragraph 2, Shanghai _______.

A.increases the amount of total daily waste after the regulation

B.will help other cities make garbage-sorting regulations

C.is still looking for long-term solutions to deal with garbage

3What is one of the problems in garbage sorting?

A.Some people think it is hard to deal with wet garbage.

B.The rules about garbage sorting are not strict enough.

C.People don’t know how to sort the garbage.

4What does the underlined word “decompose” mean in Paragraph 3?

A.分解 B.焚烧 C.掩埋

5We can infer from the passage that _______.

A.people won’t be fined if they don’t sort the garbage properly

B.some people in Shanghai are using paper bags instead of plastic bags

C.the whole country will establish garbage-sorting systems by 2020

25、 Do you want to know how and why a fall leaf changes color? We first have to

understand what leaves are and what they do.

Leaves are the world’s food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots and take CO2 from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and CO2 into glucose(葡萄糖), a kind of sugar. Plants use it as food for energy and growing.

A chemical called “chlorophyll” in the leaves gives plants their green colour. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter, and trees “know” to begin getting ready for winter.

During winter, there is not enough sunlight or water. Trees rest during this time and live on the food they store during the summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. As the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves, we begin to see yellow and orange leaves.

The bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in autumn. In some trees, like maples, sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn the glucose in the leaves into a red colour. And we can enjoy the beautiful red leaves during autumn.
