24、 Once upon a time, a young man wanted to go to a village on business. Halfway there was a mountain. Before he left home, his family warned him to stay calm and climb onto trees if he was in face of beasts(野兽). In this way, the beasts couldn’t do anything to him. The young man remembered these words and began his trip.
He walked for a long time carefully and found no beasts were out there. He thought his family’s worries were unnecessary. And he became relaxed as he walked. Just at that moment, he saw a fierce(凶猛的) tiger running to him and he climbed onto a tree nearby at once.
The tiger roared(咆哮) around the tree and even jumped to reach the man. The young man was too scared to hold the tree and fell right on the back of the tiger. Full of fear, he had to hold the tiger tightly. The tiger thought that must be a giant beast. So it was afraid and started running madly.
People on the road didn’t know what happened and said, “Look at the young man. He is riding a tiger!” “Cool!” “Superman!”
Hearing these words, the young man was very angry. “Why can’t they see I’m suffering a lot? Don’t they understand I am in fear and almost scared to death?” he said to himself.

25、 It has been described as art by some people, but to others it’s an ugly part of modern life.
What is it? Graffiti (涂鸦), of course. Look around cities in the UK today and you can see graffiti on buildings, walls, doors and even on buses or trains that have stayed in one place for too long. But where modern technology creates a problem, it also finds a way to deal with it. Last week, The Weekend West was shown around the factory of a small but successful company (公司), Hubdean.
Hubdean’s achievement is some special paints which are graffiti-resistant. How do they work? It couldn’t be simpler. Take any graffiti-covered surface. First, a treatment called Agproclear is used. Then, using a very hot pressure jet (压力喷嘴), this treatment is taken away and the graffiti disappears at the same time. Now you have a clean wall. But before this clean wall can be painted on by graffiti lovers, a new product, Agproshield, is used. This paint has a special surface which gives it two important advantages. Firstly, spray paint (喷雾颜料) won’t stick to the surface very well, and secondly, the whole surface can be cleaned very easily, just using water. Once the surface is painted, no specialist equipment (设备) is needed to keep the area clean and graffiti-free.
Not surprisingly, Hubdean’s products are used by both local governments and private companies all over the UK, and now orders are being received from around the world. This brings the company a problem, however. Can they increase production to satisfy the needs? Of course, they can build a second factory or work with a large international company to make their products. The future is looking good for Hubdean!
【1】What does the underlined word “graffiti-resistant” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Painting graffiti. B.Keeping graffiti. C.Preventing graffiti. D.Changing graffiti.
【2】When should Agproshield be used?
A.Before Agproclear is used. B.When the wall is still clean.
C.When Agproclear doesn’t work. D.After graffiti is painted on the wall.
【3】What can we learn about Hubdean?
A.There is a good market for its products.
B.A large company is going to buy its products.
C.It is developing more new and better products.
D.Most of its business comes from private companies.
【4】What would be the best title for the text?
A.Is Hubdean successful? B.Is graffiti art? Of course not!
C.Hubdean a high-tech company? D.Graffiti a problem? Just wash it off!
26、 Perhaps no one knows the power of imagination better than Chinese sci-fi writer Liu Cixin. Until four years ago, Liu worked full-time as a computer engineer at a power plant in Shanxi province. He only wrote science fiction in his spare time. But it was during this time that Liu's imagination took flight. He did what he might never have the chance to do in real life - wander in space, fight with aliens, and visit far away planets.
But even with such a powerful imagination, Liu, 55, probably didn't expect that he would become the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction’s highest prize, in 2015. Never did he think that former US president Barack Obama would read his novel The Three-Body Problem, and he would win the 20l8 Arthur C. Clarke Award for Imagination in Service to Society. It’s the first time that a Chinese writer has won the prize.
In his speech, Liu said that his imagination came from Arthur C. Clarke, a famous UK sci-fi writer. He said that reading Clarke’s classic novels had a great effect on him.
But no matter how far away Liu’s imagination takes him, somehow his novels always stay grounded (理性的).
In The Three-Body Problem, Liu tells a tale of aliens invading the earth. But unlike other alien stories, Liu talks more about relationships between people, rules of survival, and the meanings of life. And in The Wandering earth, Liu looks ahead to the day when our solar system comes to an end and humans have to look for a new place to live in. However, all his magination is based on reality. Liu’s works aren’t simply daydreams.
【1】What do we know about Liu Cixin?
A.He became a full-time writer when he was young.
B.He is the first Chinese winner of the Hugo Award.
C.He dreamed about wandering in space from childhood.
D.He is the first Asian to win the Arthur C. Clarke Award.
【2】What can we know from Liu’s speech?
A.His imagination was from Clarke's works.
B.He loves reading science fiction in his spare time.
C.He met a lot of difficulties when he started writing.
D.He has strong interest in the mysteries of the universe.
【3】Why did the writer mention The Three- Body Problem and The Wandering Earth ?
A.To tell the two books are both about real life.
B.To explain how Liu Cixin came up with his ideas.
C.To compare the different writing styles in the two books.
D.To show that Liu Cixin’s works are always based on reality.
【4】What is the main idea of the passage?
A.A new sci-fi style started by Liu Cixin. B.Liu Cixin’s achievement and his writing style.
C.The origin of Liu Cixin's powerful imagination. D.Liu Cixin’s experience of becaming a sci-fi writer.
27、A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to cheer us up or let us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves — the positive and negative (正面和负面) influences are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too shy to admit(承认) it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more scientists believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This “self-talk” helps us make ourselves active, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. It is said that as much as 77% of self-talk is likely to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the influence they will have. But we should realize that our words cause certain influence in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the salesperson will probably answer in a similar manner. Otherwise you may get into trouble.
Words have power because of their lasting influences. Many of us feel sorry for something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.
Words have power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-confidence and encourage others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to cure? The choice is ours.
【1】There is no need for us to feel shy when we talk to ourselves because ________.
