四、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

24、   Are you a TV lover? Can you think of living without TV? Well, you can give it a try this week.

25、   Andrew Holleman, a 12-year-old boy, loved playing in the open land near his home. The land was wet and forested, and made a home for the birds, other animals and many different plants. It made the perfect place for him to study and get to know the nature.

Suddenly it was announced that the “empty” land would be improved by a lot of houses on it. The plants would be removed, the animals would run away and most would probably die. Then the wet soil(土壤)would be covered with extra grounds.

When he heard about the news, he was not happy. He was very worried that the land and water would be polluted.

Andrew wrote down clearly all the research he had done about the area, and how the houses would affect(影响)the local environment. He sent letters to members of local government and television reporters. He also called on his neighbors to oppose the building of the houses.

Andrew's teachers described him as gentle, shy and active. His classmates also admired how much he knew about local animals and plants, and the environment. Each day after school, Andrew went door-to-door, to ask the people to sign(签名), who did not want the houses to be built. In only one month, he got the signatures of 250 people. 26、   The last football season was long over. Our team had done well but I wanted us to do even better the next year. But how? Then an idea hit me. I ordered cards with simple words –– “BOONVILLE PIRATES  –– 1974 STATE CHAMPIONS (州冠军)! ”

When the cards were printed, we gave them out all over the town. Pretty soon those cards were everywhere. That was what we wanted. We wanted our goal (目标) to be right in front of us, and for all to see.

Although someone doubted our words, it only served to encourage us to make our dream come true. Our school had never won a state champion in any sport –– we decided to change that history.

By the time football practice started in late August, we were focused (集中精力的). With our goal in our minds, we stepped into the final.

Then it started to snow. A huge storm broke and school was cancelled. But we made it to the school gym and kept practicing.

Our coach received a call the night before the game. He told us that state officers were thinking of cancelling the game and announcing that both teams were champions because of the bad weather. We were asked if we would accept that. “No way” was our answer.

The day came. We arrived at the football field and found it was covered in snow. Still, we began our warm-ups.

Both teams didn’t score in the first half. We became worried because time was running out our team. During the break, Coach Reagan reminded us of what we had been through to get to this moment. Then he pulled out the card, saying, “Do you want this? ”

Playing conditions were still difficult, but our determination (决心) didn’t disappear. We unbelievably scored 34 points in the second half. Our year-long dream came true –– 1974 STATE CHAMPIONS.
