26、 English author, Richard Savage, was once living in London in great poverty(贫穷). In order to earn a little money, he had written the story of his life, but not many copies of the book had been sold in the shop, and Savage was living from hand to mouth. As a result of his lack(缺乏) of food, he became very ill, but after a time, because of the skill of the doctor who had looked after him, he got well again. After a week or two, the doctor sent a bill to Savage for his visits, but poor Savage hadn’t any money and couldn’t pay it. The doctor waited for another month and sent the bill again. But still no money came. After several weeks he sent it to him again asking for his money. In the end he came to Savage’s house and asked him for payment, saying to Savage, “You know you owe your life to me and I expected some gratitude(=thanks) from you.”
“I agree,” said Savage, “that I owe my life to you, and to prove to you that I am not ungrateful for your work, I will give my life to you.” With these words he handed to him two copies entitled(=named), ‘The Life of Richard Saves’.

27、 It’s not easy for disabled people to do what they want to do. But one day in the not-too-distant future, advanced versions of devices could make life easier for many such people. Take, for example, someone who has lost the use of his/her hand. That’s a problem more common than most people realize, says Kyu Jin Cho. He’s a mechanical engineer at Seoul National University in Korea. About 500,000 people end up in a wheelchair each year. Of those, around half also suffer injuries to their hands, Cho notes. And that number doesn’t include the people who suffer injuries just to their hands.
To deal with this, Cho and his team have designed a glove made from a flexible, rubberlike material. It has three fingers that fit over the wearer’s thumb, index finger and middle finger. Wires attached to those fingers can be moved by a small motor. The motor, controlled by a simple switch (开关), pulls on the wires to open and close the hand. The result is a glove that can help people hold objects tightly.
Cho’s group calls its invention the Exo-Glove Poly. Exo is from the Greek for “outside”. It refers to the fact that this glove is worn outside the user’s body. Poly, the Greek for “many”, refers to the fact that the glove’s rubberlike material is a polymer.
Other researchers have designed gloves that pick up nerve impulses (神经冲动) from a user’s arm muscles to help control a glove’s movements. But those earlier devices were relatively complex. If produced, they would be costly, notes Cho. People who have tested the Exo-Glove Poly like its simplicity, he says. Another benefit: It’s waterproof. That means users can wash their hands or clean dishes while wearing it. The glove also can be removed and washed when it gets dirty.
Often it takes years from when an engineer first has an idea to the time a useful product becomes available for sale. That delay can be especially frustrating when the device is intended to help someone who is disabled. But a new engineering competition might help speed innovations (新发明) from the lab to the people in need.
It is called Cybathlon. This is a contest for cyber-systems. This event is intended to promote new and more muscle-assisting research across medicine, robotics, engineering and chemistry. Now, Cybathlon is held every four years. But if it is successful, maybe it could be held every two years. Expanding the number of events would be very useful, says Cho. People have many sorts of disabilities, he notes. The more events there are, the more people that the competitors could eventually help.
【1】What Kyu Jin Cho says in Paragraph 1 mainly shows that________.
A.disabled people can’t do what they want
B.a lot of people are limited to a wheelchair
C.hand injuries haven’t drawn enough attention
D.many people need devices to help their hands move

28、Across the globe, we've developed a coffee addiction, and we've become addicted to single-use cups: 600 billion disposable cups are produced and sold annually. But there's a growing push to cut this down.
Here's the problem with disposable coffee cups: The thin, waxy, plastic coating inside makes it tricky to recycle or compost them. So, they most go into a landfill (垃圾填埋场). More than that, it takes a lot of energy and resources to make them. Starbucks and McDonald's are trying to develop a disposable coffee cup that can be both recyclable and compostable. But that's easier said than done. The coffee giants have been dangling a million dollars to anybody who can crack the code.
The Rolling Stones are also thinking about the sustainable cups. If you see the Stones in concert this summer and go to get a drink, there may be no single-use plastic cup for you. The bands approached Michael Martin, who has produced a bunch of big Earth Day concerts, asking for help to eliminate plastic waste. He came up with a simple solution.
"When you come up to get your first beverage(饮料), you put down a $3 deposit, you get a really high-quality Rolling Stones-branded cup," says Martin. "You use it throughout the night, and at the end of the event you can turn your cup in and get your $3 back or you can keep your cup." If you return the heavier plastic cup at the end of the show, it gets washed and used again. Or recycled.
But this idea — returning and reusing a cup — this is not that complicated. So why is this just being tried now? "That's a really good question," says Martin. "In America, we're a throwaway society, and so we're hoping we'll be able to wake people up and change things." He's starting with rock concerts because artists have a pretty powerful platform. I mean, if Mick Jagger tells his fans to stop abusing the planet, who's going to say no to that?
【1】Why is there a growing push to cut single-use cups down?
A.Because too many people are coffee addicts.
B.Because disposable cups are hard to recycle and compost.
C.Because it takes a lot of energy and resources to recycle them.
D.Because Starbucks and McDonald's are dangling a million dollars.
【2】What does the underlined phrase "crack the code" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.develop a cup.
B.set up a recycling company.
C.find the password.
D.tackle the problem.
【3】What can we infer from Martin's solution?
A.People will wash the cups at the end of the show.
B.People hand in the cup and get 3-dollar reward.
C.People can own the cup by paying 3 dollars.
D.People must pay 3 dollars and return the cup.
【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Artists have a great impact.
B.Martin is giving a rock concert.
C.Mick Jagger' fans are abusing the planet.
D.Mick Jagger' fans never disagree with him.
29、 People born in winter are more likely to suffer mental health disorders, according to a recent study carried out by researchers at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee.
Researchers raised baby mice from birth to weaning in either “summer” light cycles of 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark or “winter” cycles of 8 hours of light and 16 hours of dark. A third group experienced 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark a day.
Then half the winter mice stayed in a winter cycle, while half switched to a summer schedule. The summer mice were similarly split. The mice raised in equal periods of light and dark were split into three groups, one of which stayed on the 12hour schedule, one of which joined the winter group, and one of which joined the summer group.
After 28 days, it turns out the summerborn mice behaved the same whether they stayed on the summer cycle or switched to winter. But among the winterborn mice, those that stayed in winter kept their previous schedule, while those that switched to summer stayed active for an extra hour and a half, which indicates that mice born and weaned in a winter light cycle showed dramatic disruptions in their biological clocks.
The finding is the first of its kind in mammals, and it could explain why people born in winter are at higher risk for mental health disorders.
“We know that the biological clock regulates mood in humans,” said study researcher McMahon. “If the mechanism similar to the one that we found in mice operates in humans, then it could not only have an effect on a number of behavioral disorders, but also have a more general effect on personality.”
【1】What’s the main idea of the text?
A.The biological clock regulates mood in humans.
B.Being born in winter has a negative effect on people’s mental health.
C.People born in winter are at higher risk for physical health disorders.

【2】The underlined word “split”(Paragraph 3) can be replaced by ________.
A.divided B.torn
C.hit D.ended
【3】Who is probably the reader of the passage?
A.A jobhunter. B.A student in the university.
C.A newlymarried couple. D.An experienced dentist.
