21、 Traveling with your dear pet by train in comfort and safety is like an adventure: It requires a little advanced planning. 【1】 And your pet can stay healthy along the way.
【2】
Best practices for keeping your pet healthy can vary by time of year, activity and destination. For example, hiking and back-country adventures can increase your pet’s exposure to ticks, while some regions may have a higher risk for heartworm. And even though your pet may currently be flea-free (无跳搔的),there’s no guarantee that other animals are as well.
Learn railway requirements
【3】 Additionally, make sure to book your pet’s ticket in advance-no one wants the heartbreak of a trip delayed or canceled because the train is at capacity (程度)for four-legged travelers.
Reduce your pet’s anxiety around train noise
If you know your dog or cat loves to go for a ride, you may not have to worry. 【4】 Put your pet in a carrier, head for the station and give plenty of treats and praise as the trains roll in. This will help your pet get used to the sounds of the railway station and the engine. 【5】 Take your pet on a day trip to see how well they manage the noise, the motion and the excitement.
A.Other routes allow pets in all cars.
B.Going for a test ride is even better.
C.Talk to the vet before you leave.
D.Make sure to do so before you leave for traveling.
E.But anxious pets might benefit from a practice run.
F.Different routes have different rules about pets on board.
G.Follow these three easy tips to help your four-legged friend travel well.
22、Recently, a big change quietly took place in agriculture. Yet neither drought nor frost is ever a concern for growers of plants currently grown inside large greenhouses. Vegetables are increasingly being grown indoors, using an advanced form of growing called controlled environment agriculture, a method that has the potential to help feed the planet, even while it threatens to further warm it.
Controlled environment agriculture has many advantages. Crops are not subject to unexpected extreme weather. Furthermore, these greenhouses can produce more food with fewer pesticides and less water. With computer-controlled temperatures and nutrients, the plants grow with less water and produce much higher yields. Above all, the produce can be bred for flavor, instead of for tolerance to heat, rain and long-distance transportation.
The carbon footprint of any given greenhouse tomato can vary quite a bit depending on energy sources, surrounding temperatures and natural light. But various studies have estimated that, on average, the production of a pound of tomatoes in an American or northern European greenhouse releases 3 to 3.5 pounds of carbon into the atmosphere. That is about 6 times the caron footprint of a field tomato, even taking into account the emissions from refrigerated trucks that often transport field vegetables hundreds or even thousands of miles to reach consumers. Greenhouses, by contrast, can be built near major population centers.
Nevertheless, in a rapidly warming world, should we be increasing agriculture’s contribution by moving some of it indoors? “We have little choice,” say advocates. “With the global population expected to grow by 25 percent to nearly 10 billion people by 2050,food production will need to increase by 60 percent to 100 percent. With freshwater supplies and land suitable for farming decreasing, and droughts getting worse due to climate change, where will this additional food come from?”
【1】What does the underlined part “a big change” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.The rapid increase of population.
B.The threatens of warming the planet.
C.The way to deal with natural disasters.
D.The tendency to grow vegetables indoors.
【2】What does controlled environment agriculture mainly focus on?
A.Making crops taste good.
B.Planting crops with less water.
C.Growing crops in extreme weather.
D.Transporting crops from a long distance.
【3】What do we know about American greenhouse tomatoes?
A.They are not high-yielding crops.
B.They are not really environmentally friendly.
C.They are grown far from population centers.
D.They are mainly exported to norther Europe.
【4】Which of the following statements may the advocates agree with?
A.Greenhouse planting is a necessary temporizing measure.
B.Greenhouse planting is tailored for small-population nations.
C.Greenhouse planting can help spread the idea of healthy eating.
D.Greenhouse planting should be stopped from warming the world.

24、 You are supposed to be our future, a new chapter in the story of our lives, but I can't help being angry with you. Only a few weeks old, you're demanding and unreasoning and I'm struggling to see the good that you bring.
To start with, we got on with it, settling into a routine as we were trapped in nappies and nights when you wouldn't settle, but it started to wear me down. You hear about mothers with postnatal depression, but no one talks about the challenges a father has to face: working to put food on the table and a roof over our heads is tough when you've had only a couple of hours to sleep, and we're not supposed to need a break. Men are supposed to never cry. I hope that I can teach you a better way, my son. You're allowed to have weakness, and not keep everything locked up until it bursts.
It came to a head one night, when your mother found me in tears beside your bed. I'd never want to hurt you, but I was terrified by the thoughts I had. I'm doing the best I can for you, and I've gone and got the help I need. Your mother has been so strong, using your grandmother, uncles and friends to help keep our family together while I work through these feelings. The worst part for me is feeling that I'm failing your mother, and that I'm putting all of your needs on her. at a time when she needs help.
There's hope for the future, but it's a slow process. One day I hope you get to read this, and look at me with questioning eyes, because you can't see the man I am right now in the man I'll be in the future.
