21、Have you ever chatted with a friend about buying a certain item and been targeted with an ad for that same item the next day? If so, you may have wondered whether your smartphone was “listening” to you.
We can definitely say that your phone is listening to you via your device s onboard microphone. It always has to listen to you so it can hear your voice command and assist you. Why is my phone listening to me? When you ask Siri to find something, this information is used for targeted ads. It’s not different from typing something into Baidu. If you’re looking for car dealerships in your city, related ads will start chasing you across the Internet in a way a virtual assistant is just another search engine.
What’s worse, your device doesn’t need to listen to your conversations. There’s a good chance you’re already giving it all the information it needs. Most of us regularly disclose our information to a wide range of websites and apps. We do this when we grant them certain permissions, or allow “cookies” to track our online activities.
So-called cookies allow websites to “remember” certain details about our interaction with the site. For instance, login cookies let you save your login details so you don’t have to re-enter them each time. The cookie will host marketer’s ads and grant it access to data it collects from you (which you will have given it permission to do—perhaps by clicking on some harmless looking popup).
As such, the advertiser can build a picture of your life: your routines, wants and needs. These companies constantly seek to evaluate the popularity of their products and how this varies based on factors such as a customer’s age, gender, height, weight, job and hobbies.

23、Nobody ever imagined that after being lost for more than half a century the intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) known as Gaolou Mixian would be restored and passed down by a young man. “ As someone of Gaolou origin, I have a responsibility to restore our ancestors’ art form, ” said Chen Guorui, the world’s only inheritor (继承人) of this ancient art.
Gaolou Mixian uses rice paste to glue together selected grains of transparent (透明的) rice to create realistic figures or structures. It is a unique folk art that developed during the Qing Dynasty and reached its peak during the first half of the 20th century. Each household in Gaolou village would make rice structures that they put on display in their ancestral halls (祠堂) during the Chinese New Year, which attracted people from all sides.
However, due to the wet weather in southern China, these rice-made artworks would only last three to four months before losing their shape. It is for this reason that these works are not seen in museums in China. Due to various historical reasons, most people in Gaolou village did not pass down the art form, which caused it to disappear nearly 70 years ago.
Chen found out about this after hearing one former resident express disappointment about its loss. Curious, he started to do research and tried out the methods he heard about from older people in the village. After several months of exploration, Chen finally completed his first successful work.
Over the past five years, Chen has gradually improved his skills and even begun using new techniques, such as making some colorful artworks with colored grains of rice. Since 2017, people at home and abroad have taken an interest in this long-lost art form. To avoid being the last inheritor, Chen has been giving classes to some students at a primary school in Fuzhou with the support of local education authorities.

24、 Until the 1990s coffee was rarely served in China except at luxury hotels aimed at foreigners.
When Starbucks opened its first outlet there in 1999 it was far from clear that the country’s enthusiastic tea drinkers would take to such a different and usually more costly-source of caffeine.
Starbucks tried to entice(引诱)customers unused to coffee’s bitter taste by promoting milk- and sugar-heavy mixtures such as Frappuccinos (星冰乐).
Starbucks now has about 3,800 outlets in China- more than in any other country outside America.
Coffee has become fashionable among the middle class. Statista, a business-intelligence portal(门户网站),says the roast coffee market in China is growing by more than 10% a year. Starbucks and its rivals see big future for expanding there.
Since its founding less than two years ago, Luckin-a newly-founded coffee brand in China- has opened more than 2,300 outlets. On May 17th Luckin's first public offering on the NASDAQ stock market raised more than $570m, giving it a value of about $4 billion. Most of Luckin’s outlets are merely small shops where busy white-collar workers pick up their drinks, having ordered them online. Super-fast delivery can also be arranged through the company’s app,
The high-class end of the market is prosperous too.
Where better to sip and WeChat? It’s not just the drink that appeals, it’s the chance to share pictures of it.

25、 President Obama’s second Inaugural Address used soaring language to stress America’s commitment to the dream of equality of opportunity: ‘We are true to our belief that a little girl born into _______ knows that she has the same chance to succeed as anybody else, because she is an American’.
The gap between ideal and reality could hardly be _______ . Today, the United States has less equality of opportunity than almost any other advanced industrial country. Study after study has _______ the myth that America is a land of opportunity. A way of looking at equality of opportunity is to as to what extent the life chances of a child are _______ the education and income of his parents. Is it just as likely that a child of poor or poorly educated parents gets a good education and rises to the middle class as someone born to middle-class parents with college degrees? Even in a more democratic society. the answer would be no.
How do we explain this? Some of it has to do with discrimination (歧视). Latinos and African-Americans still get paid less than whites, and women still get paid less than men, _______ they recently surpassed (超越)men in the number of advanced degrees they obtain. Discrimination, however, is only a small part of the _______. Probably the most important reason for _______ of equality of opportunity is education. After World WarⅡ, we made a major effort to _______ higher education to Americans across the country. But then we changed, in several ways. While racial segregation(种族隔离)decreased, economic segregation increased. After 1980, the poor grew poorer, the middle stagnated(停滞不前), and the top did better and better. A result was a widening gap in educational performance – the _______ gap between rich and poor kids born in 2001 was 30 to 40 percent larger than it was for those born 25 years earlier, a Stanford sociologist found. Of course, there are other forces ______ . Children in rich families get more exposure to reading. Their families can afford enriching experiences like music lessons and summer camp. They get better nutrition and health care, which enhance their learning, directly and indirectly.
Now Americans are coming to realize that without extensive policy changes, their long cherished belief is only a myth. It is unreasonable that a rich country like the United States has made _______ to higher education so difficult for those at the bottom and middle. There are many _______ ways of providing chances for more to receive higher education, from Australia’s income-contingent loan program to the near-free system of universities in Europe. A more educated population produces greater innovation, and a booming economy. Those benefits are why we’ve long been ______ to free public education through 12th grade. But while a 12th-grade education might have been enough a century ago, it isn’t today. Yet we haven’t _______ our system to contemporary realities.
The steps I’ve outlined are not just affordable but necessary. Even more important, though, is that we cannot afford to let our country drift farther from _______ that the vast majority of Americans share. We will never fully succeed in achieving Mr. Obama’s vision of a poor girl’s having exactly the same opportunities as a wealthy girl. But we could do much, much better, and must not rest until we do.
