21、   A team of well-known developers have built a security tool, Scanguard™, which they believe will be the last piece of software consumers will ever need.

Product Manager, David, from ScanGuard, explains, "The software can increase the security immediately by distinguishing any hidden dangers or online tracking cookies. If you own a Windows Computer then you are allowed to have a free security scan. We advise users not to hesitate and try it cautiously and bravely before it's too late. We feel good knowing that we're helping make things faster and more secure for our customers,' he continues.

22、   Oindrila Basu from India, 25, is a key member of a global forestry organization. Back in her youth, she had to be taught the importance of nature. She used to destroy nests of the bulbul bird just for fun. Once, her mother caught her and forced her to find the eggs and replace the nest. With a heavy heart, the girl realized she had done something terrible.

This is just one way that Basu’s parents shaped her understanding and appreciation of nature. Living in the countryside, she spent her youth studying ants before a rain, watching sunbirds drink bottlebrush nectar, counting fireflies and watching seedlings grow. Then her parents decided to move to a nearby city with better educational opportunities and she stopped having firsthand experiences with nature.

As she struggled to choose a college major, her mother suggested a career in forestry. That’s when her journey began and she fell in love with forestry. Away from the crowded concrete cities, in the lap of the Himalayas, she got her bachelor’s degree in forestry from Kumaun University, India. When she went on to study for a master’s in forestry from the Forest Research Institute, India, she finally got introduced to a like-minded group of people, devoted to the same cause-the International Forestry Students’ AssociationIFSA.

IFSA is a global organization connecting students to exchange knowledge and participate in forestry activities. The youth joining IFSA are encouraged to undertake its mission-to enrich forest education and spread a love of nature through events and intercultural exchanges.

After six months of exciting international conferences and workshops, Basu, found her home-a family that loved forests as much as she did. She felt rejuvenated(重生的); her passion had a direction. Now she wanted to do more.

Now with the IFSA, Basu recalled her experience of joining, “On purpose or by chance we chose forestry, or rather, forestry chose us”.

CHICAGO, Illinois -- Students shouted, hugged and cried tears of joy recently as they played with certified therapy dogs (获得认证的治疗犬) at Lane Tech College Prep, an activity designed as a break from the demands of preparing for final exams.

This is the second year the dogs and volunteers have been brought into the school from Chicago-based Canine Therapy Corps to provide much-needed relief for stressed or anxious kids.

“It's stressful around finals time,” Assistant Principal Sarah Hanly said, adding that this week students are turning in final projects, reviewing and studying for next week's exams.

It seemed to do the trick. Shouts and cheers went up from a group of students as they met Waffles, an 85-pound dog, and rushed to put their hands on his fur.

Junior Sophie Cohen sat next to Waffles, petting him and chatting with her friends and Waffles' owner. She said she had just been talking to her friend about how stressed out she was over finals. “Just the idea of having a dog in school is good because the school environment is just about stress,” she said. “And then here is this dog. You get a break.”

Monica Synecky, Waffles' owner and a volunteer with Canine Therapy Corps, said she often takes her dog to visit high school students around finals time. “This age group benefits really well from just the presence of Waffles or other certified therapy dogs,” she said.

Therapy dogs must be properly trained and pass a test before they become certified, said Ann Davidson, operations manager at Canine Therapy Corps.

“Taking breaks is one of several tools students can use to manage stress or anxiety,” said Jacqueline Rhew, a registered clinical professional consultant. Rhew also said, “Trained dogs help students put academic stress into perspective.” When students don't properly manage stress, it can turn into troubling anxiety.

Juniors Jennifer Giraldo and Anastasia Ramirez hugged and laughed as they took turns with their classmates, giving Luna, a Portuguese water dog, commands to sit, lie down and roll over. “I was stressing all third and fourth periods, and then people were talking about the dogs,” said Ramirez, who decided to wait in line with Giraldo to see the dogs herself. “Now I feel better.”

24、   A simple, yet powerful UK program has been fighting elderly loneliness by recruiting young adults as volunteers to read to seniors with vision problems and mental diseases.

Lily has benefited from the program having her vision “restored” by 15-year-old Amy, a school girl who was paired with Lily through the Reading Friends project. Lily was a librarian and enthusiastic reader who would read “two to three books every week”. After developing a terrible disease, however, Lily found herself unable to read or watch television for any length of time without her eyes hurting.

Not only have Lily’s regular reading sessions with Amy helped to reconnect her with her passion for literature, they have also built a strong intergenerational friendship between the two ladies. “I chose a book and she would come along and read it to me,” Lily said. “But we have only got through two books so far because we end up chatting too much. We have read two historical novels and get on very well.”

Research shows that reading together can help older people to build social networks and connect with others. Evidence also shows that reading has a positive impact on the elderly’s wellbeing and can reduce the risk of developing mental diseases.

Rose, a teacher, is responsible for connecting schoolchildren like Amy with the program and she says that it has had an amazing impact on the youngsters. “We have wonderful young people at our school and we wanted to get them into the community,” Rose said. “It has been fantastic to see them blossom as well as improving their literacy and social skills. They are meeting community members like Lily that they are making friendships with, and library staff can help them, not only with education but outside as well.”

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was August. We were on vacation, just my six-year-old son Kevin and I, for my husband was always busy. Having driven from our home in the city to a remote and peaceful place, we wouldn’t see friends or family—it would be a nice, safe, socially distanced week away. We had hiked about half mile to an attractive spot called Diana’s Baths, which afforded visitors an expanse of transparent water. The water flows and then falls off a series of big flat stones, making itself a small waterfall, about 7 inches high.

Several couples and their kids in swimsuits were playing to their heart’s content in the water. We joined them. I watched as some younger parents nervously drove their babies away from the stones edges. Fast-moving water made standing there quite dangerous, for I saw a certain kid with curly hair missed a step and almost fell down. The air was full of shouts and laughter. I felt so lucky that I didn’t always need to fix my eyes on my son. Kevin could navigate his physical space with more confidence and care. But I was still terrified when I saw Kevin jump between the slippery rocks.

But with the passing of time, I soon relaxed, and we were both having fun, my kid splashing and kicking in the cool water, laughing heartily as I put my head under the cold running water.

Then seconds later, every fear I’d ever had rose to the surface. I lifted my head, turned and saw Kevin sitting between two stones, with the rushing water flowing around him. I could see he was shaking sometimes because of the water rapids. I yelled at him to get out. He yelled back something that I couldn’t hear.
