26、Sophia Gholz is an award-winning children's book author, music lover. and magic seeker. Sophia enjoys writing fiction with humor and heart. When writing nonfiction, she pulls on her love of science and her family background in ecology.
Her book, The Boy Who Grew a Forest, shares the true story of Jadav Payeng, a man in India who single- bandedly planted an entire forest over the course of his lifetime. When he was younger, Jadav Payeng was shocked by the destruction of his island home. So he took matters into his own bands and began planting one seed at a time. Jadav's forest is now over 1300 acres and provides a home to many animals, some endangered. Jadav is still planting today and his hard work has now been celebrated around the world.
To write this story, Sophia got to know more about Jadav Payeng and his forest through a documentary film called Forest Man. Influenced by her father, a forest ecologist and a scientist, she grew up learning about the importance of trees and the natural world. When she heard about a man on a m1ssion to reforest an entire island on his own, she was drawn to this story.
As for research, most of her research was done online. She read every news article that she could find about Jadav and listened to every interview. Then she reached out to several people who had met or interviewed Jadav as well, including the producer of his short documentary film.
She hopes that The Boy Who Grew a Forest lights a spark in everyone who reads it to go out and care for our beautiful planet. She'd love young readers to be inspired to plant or to learn more about animal habitats, biodiversity and science in general.

27、MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) has released a video of their ongoing work using muscle signals to control devices. Their latest involves full and fine control of drones (无人机), using just hand and arm gestures to pilot through a series of circles.
This work is impressive not just because they’re using bio-feedback to control the devices, instead of optical (光学的)or other kinds of gesture recognition, but also because of how specific the controls can be, setting up a range of different potential applications for this kind of remote tech.
This particular group of researchers has been looking at different applications for this tech, including its use in collaborative robotics (协作机器人)for potential industrial applications. Drone piloting is another area that could have big applications in terms of real- world use, especially once you start to imagine entire groups of these taking flight with a pilot provided a view of what they can see via VR. That could be a great way to do spot surveying for construction, for example, or remote equipment check of dangerous places and other construction that’s hard for people to reach.
The development of drones is just part of the team’s work. Smooth robot and human interaction is the ultimate goal of the team working on this tech. Researchers believe the process should be as easy when controlling and working with robots. They say thinking and doing are essentially happening at the same time when we communicate with our environment, but when we act through machines or remote tools, there’s often something lost in translation, showing slow learning, and the requirement of lots of training. Therefore, much more work is going on.
【1】What is impressive about the work?
A.It has found the best way to control robots.
B.It uses gestures to accurately control the devices.
C.The researchers are particular and famous experts.
D.Its remote tech has been used in some industrial areas.
【2】What does paragraph 3 try to tell us?
A.The big changes of future industries.
B.The new way to spot construction sites.
C.The possible application of the tech in real world.
D.The benefits that VR technology brings to drones,
【3】What is the aim of the research according to the last paragraph?
A.To make it possible for robots to think.
B.To speed up the learning process of robots.
C.To meet the requirement of robot controlling.
D.To enable more natural human-robot communication.
【4】What’s the best title for this text?
A.New Applications of Drones
B.Muscle Signals Can Pilot Drones
C.MIT’s New Research on Robots
D.Possibilities of New Robots
28、People take up volunteering for different reasons. 【1】, while others want to meet new people or learn new skills. Whatever the reason, you need to make some decisions.
Choose a charity or organization
Firstly, what sort of organization do you want to help. 【2】. And perhaps you have been affected by some of the problems that a charity aims to support, like children who need help. Many local schools rely on volunteers who come in regularly to read with the children or help with their math.
Decide on the kind of work
【3】, you then have to decide what sort of volunteer work you want to do. Think about your existing skills: Do you prefer hands-on work? Are you good at dealing with people? Do you have a background in paperwork? Charities need volunteers to work in shops, organize or manage money-raising events, or, in the case of animal charities, walk dogs.
【4】
Be prepared with information about your previous (or current) employment and the sort of skills you have, so that the charity can match you to the most appropriate role. You might think that you have no such skills. Don’t let your lack of confidence stop you. Ask your friends and loved ones what they think you have to offer.
Call for some relevant information
Most charities have a website with a section aimed at attracting potential volunteers and they advertise specific roles available. But smaller charities might not have money to do this. In this case, you would usually need to phone or visit their offices to find out how you can help. 【5】.
A.Apply for suitable positions
B.Decide on your interest
C.Some people want to “give something back”
D.You will be welcomed with open arms
E.You might have a particular charity in mind
F.Without them, they wouldn’t carry out their work
G.Once you have decided where you want to volunteer
29、 Why can people speaking the same language have such different accents? The short answer: new accents begin to develop when isolated(隔绝的) groups of speakers start making nearly unnoticeable changes to the way they pronounce words.
“Accent development is the first step in language change. Fifteen hundred years ago, languages like English, Dutch and Swedish were actually all dialects of the same language, but of course then they changed overtime.” Jonathan Harrington, a linguist(语言学家) in University of Munich, is interested in how accents first get started. But because of global communication, most communities are no longer linguistically isolated, and recording equipment didn't exist back when more of them were.
So how to capture the early stages of accent formation today? Harrington and his team turned to members of the British Antarctic Survey, who speak with a variety of English accents. “When you are in Antarctica during the winter period, there is no way in and no way out. So they were isolated together and they had to communicate and cooperate with each other.” Harrington's team recorded the winterers reciting a list of words before they left for Antarctica. Then, while there, the winterers recorded themselves saying the same words four more times. The linguists then analyzed the recordings.
Even during their short time in Antarctica, the way the winterers produced certain vowels (元音) began to converge. For example, at the beginning of the study, some people produced the /u/ in “food” at the front of the mouth while others used the back of the mouth. But they began to sound more similar overtime.
Harrington says the research isn't just relevant for understanding Earth's colonial past. He thinks there's every reason to expect long isolation will cause astronauts on Mars missions to end up with an out﹣of﹣this world accent.
【1】What makes it hard to know how accents first started?
A.The lack of recordings in the past.
B.The isolation of most communities.
C.The fast development of new accents.
D.The big number of dialects of the same language.
【2】What does the underlined word “converge” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Become simpler.
B.Become similar.

D.They don't have any difficulty adjusting to the life on Earth.
【4】Where is text probably from?

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?
Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 【1】 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 【2】.
This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 【3】 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 【4】 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 【5】 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.
So why are soft skills so highly 【6】 for?
With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 【7】 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 【8】 career.
Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 【9】 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 【10】 in their chosen field.

A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City has tested positive for the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus, becoming the first known case of human-animal 【1】, the zoo's chief veterinarian said on Sunday.
Nadia, the 4-year-old Malayan tiger that tested positive, was 【2】 for the COVID-19 disease after 【3】 a dry cough along with three other tigers and three lions, the Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages the zoo, said in a statement.
All of the cats are expected to recover, it said. But officials believe this is a unique case because Nadia became sick after 【4】 to an asymptomatic zoo employee, Paul Calle, chief veterinarian at the Bronx Zoo, told Reuters.
Calle said they did not know which employee infected the tiger. "This is the first time that we have discovered that a person infects the animal and the animal gets sick," Calle said, adding that they planned to share the findings with other zoos and institutions. " I guess 【5】 we will all have a better understanding as a result.
While the other tigers and lions were also 【6】 symptoms, the zoo decided to test only Nadia because she was the sickest and had started to lose her appetite already, and they did not want to 【7】 all the cats to anesthesia(麻醉), Calle said.
Nadia 【8】 X-rays, an ultrasound(超声波) and blood tests to try to figure out what was making her sick . They decided to test for COVID-19 【9】 the surge in cases in New York City, the epicenter of the outbreak in the United States. The first tiger at the zoo, which has been shut since mid-March, began showing 【10】 of illness on March 27, according to the US Department of Agriculture National Veterinary Services Laboratories.

Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems? Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 【1】 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.
When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internet, they appeared to 【2】that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.
While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”,there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to【3】. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.
“Users are becoming slightly more 【4】what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”
But 【5】no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.
Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 【6】 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.
Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!,said that it was “the first step to【7】passwords”. I always prided myself on being a wise shopper and having a good nose for bargains. So when I came across a sporting goods store with a sign “Going Out of Business Sale”, I marched into the crowded store. Up and down the aisles (通道), I wandered, humming to myself and enjoying the energy and excitement of a sale.
All of a sudden, there, at the back of the store sat a canoe(轻舟) exactly like my husband’s dream Supremo Numero-Uno, whose picture had been stuck on the bathroom mirror for years. My heart beat wildly. I pushed my way through the crowds, and nearly fell into the canoe looking for the price tag. There it was, with the manufacturer’s suggested price at $6,750 plus tax crossed out and a handwritten TO CLEAR $750 AS IS. Must be a mistake. $6000 off? Salesman. I had to talk to a salesman. I spotted a young fellow with a “Hi. I’m Mathew”. “Mathew. Tell me about this El Supremo canoe. What’s wrong with it? Why is it only $750?”
“Oh. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s brand new. We’re closing the store. It’s on clearance like everything else. I’ll go check.” A few minutes later he came back and said, “I’m sorry ma’am. Someone made a mistake on the sale tag. It should be $4,750 for the whole package.”
I felt tears well up in my eyes. “Oh well”, I said sadly. “Of course, it was too good to be true. This is exactly like my husband’s dreamboat. I guess I started to dream myself when I saw that price tag. He’s going to be 62 years old Friday. Had to retire early for his health. It’s been hard on just the pension but the stubborn old fool has been saving $10 every week for years to buy one just like this. I promise I won’t buy anything, but it’s just an old man’s silly dream, you know. Always said he wanted to fish in a canoe after he retired,” my voice lowered and I turned and walked away.
