26、   Scientists at the University of Bonn carried out extensive research to show that the waterdrops rolling off a lotus (莲花)leaf carry away dirt, leaving the surface perfectly clean. This phenomena has been named the “Lotus Effect" and works best on rough surfaces.

Contrary to popular belief, lotus leaves are not smooth at all. When examined under a powerful microscope , the leaf cells show a bumpy surface. That makes the surface rough. As a result, dirt rests only on the tips of the wax crystals (蜡晶体)covering the leaf surface. The roughness reduces the contact area between the dirt and the leaf surface. A rough surface structure with wax crystals makes it impossible for water to stick. Due to the friction (摩擦 力),the water contracts at once. It forms round waterdrops to minimize the contact area with the rough, waxy leaf surface and runs off the leaf very quickly. Since the dirt only rests on the tips of the wax crystals they stick more strongly to the waterdrops than to the leaf surfaces They are washed away when the water falls on the leaves.

On smooth leaves, the dirt is pushed from one part of the leaf to the other. This is because the dirt has a larger contact area where they can rest comfortably on the flat surface. We must also keep in mind that water usually spreads and only partially runs off the leaves that too, only if the leaf is tilted! The dirt may get driven, but they are mainly displaced from one side of the leaf to the other.

Scientists say that the “Lotus Effect" is particularly beneficial for it helps to protect the lotus leaves from harmful bacteria. The dirt on the leaves often contains tiny disease causing fungi and bacteria. While most of the bacteria get washed off, the few that remain eventually die since they do not get the water they require for survival and growth.

1What is “Lotus Effect”

A. The self-cleaning feature of lotus leaves.

B. The lotus surfaces'  ability to kill harmful bacteria.

C. The dirt leaving off lotus leaves with the help of wind.

D. Lotus leaves making waterdrops from the dirt on them.

2What does the underlined word “bumpy” in paragraph 2 probobaly mean?

A. Flat. B. Bended.

C. Flexible. D. Rough.

3Why are waterdrops unable to stay on lotus leaves?

A. The contact area between drops and leaves is too large.

B. The smooth leaf surface makes waterdrops roll down.

C. The rough and waxy leaf surface reduces the friction.

D. The waterdrops fall on the leaves at a too high speed.

4What is the benefit of “Lotus Effect”?

A. It can protect the lotus from sunshine.

B. It can help the lotus grow healthily.

C. It can make the bacteria more and stronger.

D. It can help the lotus leaves keep the required water.

27、   Inventor, physicist, surveyor, astronomer, biologist, artist... Robert Hooke was all these and more. Some say he was the greatest experimental scientist of the seventeenth century. Once he worked with renowned men of science like Christian Huygens, Antony van Leeuwenhoek, Robert Boyle, Isaac Newton and the great architect, Christopher Wren.

Hooke’s early education began at home, under the guidance of his father. He entered Westminster School at the age of thirteen, and from there he went to Oxford, where he came in contact with some of the best scientists in England. Hooke impressed them with his skill at designing experiments and devising instruments. In 1662, at the age of twenty-eight, he was named Curator of Experiments of the newly formed Royal Society of London. Hooke accepted the job, even though he knew that it had no money to pay him!

Watching living things through the microscope was one of his favorite occupations.

He devised a compound microscope for this purpose. One day while observing a cork (软木) under a microscope, he saw honeycomb-like structures. They were cells—the smallest units of life. In fact, it was Hooke who coined the term “cell” as the box like cells of the cork reminded him of the cells of a monastery (修道院).Perhaps because of his varied interests, Hooke often left experiments unfinished. Others took up where he left  off and then claimed sole (独占的) credit. This sometimes led to quarrels with colleagues. One work that he finished was his book MICRO GRAPHIA, a volume that reveals the immense potential of the microscope. The book also includes, among other things, ideas on gravity and light which may have helped scientists like Newton while they  were developing their own theories on these phenomena.

Hooke made valuable contributions to astronomy too. A crater (陨石坑) on the moon is named after him in appreciation of his services to this branch of science.

1From the first paragraph, we can know that Robert Hooke ________.

A.was famous because he worked with many scientists

B.liked making friends with the famous people

C.received a lot from other scientists

D.made contributions to many different fields

2Robert Hooke probably went to school in________.

A.1634 B.1647 C.1662 D.1640

3Robert Hooke made himself known to some of the best scientists in England by________.

A.learning by himself with his father's help

B.introducing himself to them

C.designing experiments and instruments

D.refusing any reward from Royal Society of London

4Robert Hooke couldn’t get along well with his colleagues because________.

A.he couldn’t finish his work on time sometimes

B.he had all kinds of interests in his daily life

C.he was too proud to look up to them

D.the other scientists took the fruits of his experiments

28、   Communities change in all sorts of ways over time. My few trips home over the years have given me an idea of the long-term influence on a community when population falls even while wealth rises.

I come from one of the beautiful seaside towns that dot the Jersey Shore just seventy-five miles south of New York City. When I was growing up thirty-five years ago, these were lively and busy communities filed year-round with resident(居民) and full of tourists all summer.

Today, I notice one big change since my childhood: no people. No children playing around, no traffic in the streets and no customers looking through the storefronts. The big beautiful Victorian homes that housed families with five or more children and grandparents mow sit quiet. The line of old bicycles in the drive has been replaced by a single luxury(豪华的) car from other states.

Few who grew up here can afford to live in their parents’ homes today. Over time, the beauty of the place along with its perfect location turned a middle-class, family-centered neighborhood into a collection of vacation homes for the rich. The town is too expensive for the “locals” but too far from the City for workers.

It is not bad-just different.

Unless of course you own a small business that was built to serve a large year-round population. Small hardware stores, clothes shops, gift shops and independent cafes have been replaced by law offices and businesses dealing with houses and land. The hospitality(招待) industry, which includes my parents’ business, is having a hard time as there just aren’t enough customers between September and June. The land is worth more than the business itself, waiting for condo(公寓) developers.

Rising land and house values in Oak Park make me think of my family’s experience on the Jersey Shore. A community is more than a place-it is the people who live there. Who will live in Oak Park in thirty years? Just wondering.

1How was the author’s hometown when he was a child?

A.It was quite and small. B.It was a popular attraction in summer.

C.It had a lot of vacation homes. D.It was a beautiful with modern style house.

2What does the author care most about his hometown?

A.The heavy traffic. B.Changes in family structures.

C.Rising prices of houses. D.The falling population.

3Who will be seriously hurt by the changes in Oak Park?

A.City workers. B.Holidaymakers.

C.Condo developers. D.Small business owners.

4How does the author probably feel when writing this text?

A.Worried. B.Angry.

C.Doubtful. D.Surprised.

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.

The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression, which can be 1 back to 500 years ago. The expression is used to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.

Being in “deep water” is almost the same as being in “hot water”. When you are in deep water, you are in a difficult 2. Imagine a person who cannot swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. The problem is too deep. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest in stocks in complete 3 of the stock market.

When a friend is 6 by a mistake she has made, you might tell her to forget about it. You say it is water over the dam.

Another common expression, "to hold water," is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about. It probably comes from the way of testing the 7 of a container. If it can hold water, it is strong and has no holes in it. If your 8 can hold water, it is strong and does not have any holes. If it does not hold water, then it is weak and can not be 9.

"Throwing cold water" also is an expression that deals with an idea or 10. For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems. But you wife "throws cold water" on the idea, because she says a new car costs too much

It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

41、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Miss Baugh taught seventh-grade social studies. She was the kind of teacher that just about everyone has had at least once: Scary. Her reputation was not unlike that of Dracula. Miss Baugh allowed no nonsense (胡言乱语). She drilled us and taught us to take school seriously. She also introduced to us the concept of “extra credit” for a correct response to a random question — and a frown for an incorrect one. Miss Baugh had been teaching for a long time and knew how to frighten even the naughty boys in the back row, including me. She managed to scare us all.

But I also had a life outside of school and had just discovered cheap prank (恶作剧) pieces —   an ink bottle painted to look as though it had overturned, and a piece of shiny black metal shaped like a puddle of ink.

Of all the people I could have pranked, I chose Miss Baugh somehow. At the beginning of the class, before she’d returned to her classroom, I dared to approach her desk. I opened her grade book and placed the bottle and the black metal on one of the pages, proudly noting that it truly did look like spilled ink! Then I went to my desk and waited for the fun.

I wasn’t disappointed. When Miss Baugh saw the items, she let out a little cry and looked for something to wipe up the ink with. The prank had succeeded the way beyond my expectations. But immediately she discovered that it was just a piece of black metal. She picked up the “puddle”, then the bottle, and examined them. She looked up with eyes sweeping the classroom with a deadly stare. Some of my classmates who had seen me set up the fake spill carefully avoided looking at me, so as not to give me away. Then came the unavoidable question: “Who did this?”

注意:

1.续写词数应为150左右;

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

After a few violent beats in my heart, I slowly raised my hand.
