二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、   No one ever said science education was easy. Certainly the concepts we teach, like conservation of momentum (动量守恒) or quantum mechanics (量子力学),can be hard to grasp. But what really makes our reaching complicated is that we're also trying to teach a deeper lesson at the same time — to help students understand the nature of science itself.

All too often, young people get the impression that science is about learning certain "laws" and then applying them to different situations. After all, that's what we make them do on tests, to show that they've been doing the work. But that's not it at all. Science is the process of building these concepts through the collection of experimental evidence.

And while I'm on it let's call these concepts what they really are — not laws, but models. Science is all about building and testing models. It's difficult to help students understand that aspect of science when we just give them the models to begin with. Sure, in physics we often include historical or mathematical evidence to support big ideas, but that often isn't enough.

Of course, we can't start from scratch. If students had to build their own models from the ground up, it would be like trying to learn programming by inventing computers. As Isaac Newton is supposed to have said, we stand on the shoulders of giants. We must take models built by others and go from there.

What I'd like to suggest is that this actually provides a great way into the adventure of science and an opportunity to meet our objectives as educators. If you can create a situation that challenges students' assumptions and produces conceptual conflict, that's a great opportunity for learning.

【1】What is the misunderstanding of teaching science?

A.It's complicated.

B.It focuses on the nature of science.

C.It's very difficult.

D.It lies in teaching and testing “laws”.

【2】Which way to teach science is highly recommended by the author?

A.Encouraging students to always start from scratch.

B.Providing students with some models to follow suit.

C.Guiding students to begin with models built by others.

D.Offering students proof to support important concepts.

【3】The author cites Isaac Newton's words to              .

A.justify the experiment

B.praise the statement

C.show the achievement

D.support the argument

【4】What is the best title of the passage?

A.Science teaching

B.Concept building

C.Science learning

D.Concept conflicting

27、   A long time ago, and still in some countries today, the dollar and penny did not even exist. Actually, trading a cow for two pigs is still the norm (常态) for many cultures. So how is it that we get to use paper and coins?

The biggest challenge for ancient cultures was to have a system that would allow people to exchange products with each other. However, the problem came up when one person was in need of something immediately that they didn’t have a product to trade. For example, a farmer that needed wheat only had fruit to exchange but the fruit wasn’t ready to hand over for another two months. This is what started the idea of a “common currency”. The farmer could buy what he needed with “currency” and just as important, the value of the goods he was exchanging was standardized. He did not have to worry about giving anything in return now or later; his deal was complete. Thus “money” was born.

Over time, each country has developed its own currency and something that might cost 1,000,000 lire in one country might be 1 dollar in the US currency. Most countries also frequently use powerful political people as the “face” of their currency. The US currency is the best example of this. Can you name all the presidents that currently appear on not only paper money but also coins?

The real excitement, however, is the future of how we buy things. People have started to use debit cards (借记卡) that allow you to pay using your bank account rather than cash. That has given way to something called Mondex. Mondex allows you to “wave” your card past any special device that can read these cards. You no longer have to insert, swipe () and then punch in numbers, which could cause security problems.

1What’s the purpose of Paragraph 1?

A.To introduce the topic of the text.

B.To explain what money was like in history.

C.To tell us that there was no money long ago.

D.To compare the difference between a cow and two pigs.

2The farmer had an idea of using currency when ________.

A.he had a product to exchange B.he had made a lot of money

C.he had nothing to trade for what he needed D.he would harvest his fruit

3Mondex is a kind of card which can ________.

A.keep you safe if you are in trouble

B.save you a large amount of money

C.help you trade safely and conveniently

D.make you happy whenever you are bored

4What does this passage mainly talk about?

A.The evolution of payment. B.The trade in ancient times.

C.The use of money in the world. D.New ways of payment.

28、   Rats that eat high levels of a natural sugar known as fructose(果糖)seem to age faster than other rats-and the same could be true for people who eat too much sweet junk food, Israeli researchers said Monday.

Fructose, found naturally in honey and fruit, is used widely in foods ranging from soft drinks to yogurt. But while its sweet taste is popular, the sugar could cause wrinkles, the researchers said. Dr. Moshe Werman and Boaz Levi of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology fed large amounts of fructose to laboratory rats. Writing in the Journal of Nutrition, they said the fructose-fed rats showed changes in the collagen(胶原蛋白)of their skin and bones. Collagen basically holds the body together. The loss of collagen is what causes loose skin and deep wrinkles in older people.

The process affected, Werman's team said, is known as cross-linking(交叉相连). "Too much cross-linking makes the skin stiff, and these are the conditions that encourage wrinkled skin," Werman said in a statement. He said the same could be true of people, although this has not been shown. "Americans are eating more and more processed foods such as baked goods, canned fruits, jams and dairy products that contain fructose," Werman said. Other studies have shown that taking in high fructose may cause diabetes(糖尿病).

The rats Werman worked with were fed much more than the average adult person might eat in a day, which is standard in such experiments. The rats were fed 19.5 grams of fructose per kg of weight every day for a year.

1In the experiments, if a rat was 0.25 kg, it may have been fed about   grams of fructose every day for a year.

A.3 B.4

C.5 D.6

2What is the reason why older people have deep wrinkles?

A.They don't drink enough water every day.

B.Collagen in their body is missing.

C.They don't take enough exercise every day.

D.They like eating sugar.

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.The rats in Werman’s lab ate much more sugar than an ordinary adult might eat in a day.

B.Too much cross-linking makes the skin soft.

C.The fructose-fed rats only showed changes in the collagen of their skin.

D.It hasn't been shown that taking in high fructose may cause diabetes.

4The best title for the passage should be “ ” .

A.Sugar — it could reduce collagen B.Sugar — it could age you

C.Collagen — it could cause wrinkles D.Collagen — it could age you

29、   As a youngster, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather’s farm in western Pennsylvania. Surrounded by miles of winding stone walls, the house and field provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me.

Since my first visit to the farm, I had wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stone walls surrounding the houses. My parents would never approve because the walls were so old that some stones were loose and falling. Still, my idea to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally I had all my courage to enter the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.

“I want to climb the stone walls,” I said. “Heavens, no! You’ll hurt yourself!” the response was just as I’d expected. But before I left the room, I was stopped by my grandfather’s loud voice. “Now hold on just a minute,” I heard him say. “Let the boy climb the stone walls. He has to learn to do things for himself. ”

“Go,” he said to me, “and come and see me when you get back.” For the next two and a half hours I climbed those old walls—and had the time of my life. Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventures. I’ll never forget what he said. “Fred,” he said, smiling, “You made this day a special day just by being yourself. Always remember, there’s only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are.”

Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: my message to children at the end of almost every visit. “There’s only one person in this whole world like you.” the kids can count on hearing me say, “and people can like you exactly as you are.”

A huge milestone has just been reached in the field of artificial intelligence: AlphaGo, a program developed by Google’s DeepMind unit, has defeated legendary Go player Lee Se-dol in the first of five historic matches being held in Seoul, South Korea. Lee 1 after about three and a half hours, with 28 minutes and 28 seconds remaining on his clock. The series is the first time a professional 9-dan Go player has taken on a computer, and Lee is 2 for a $1 million prize.

“I was very surprised,”said Lee after the match.“I didn’t expect to lose. But I didn’t think AlphaGo would play the game in such a perfect manner.”DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis expressed“huge 3 for Lee Se-dol and his amazing skills.”calling the game“hugely exciting”and“very tense.”Team lead David Silver said it was an“amazing game of Go that really pushed AlphaGo to its 4.”

Go is an ancient Chinese board game that has long been considered one of the great 5faced by AI. While computer programs ow best the world’s leading human players of games like checkers and chess, the high level of intuition and 6required by Go has made it tough for computers to crack. DeepMind’s AlphaGo program is the most 7effort yet, using a complex system of deep neural networks and machine learning; it beat European champion Fan Hui last year, but Lee Se-dol is another 8 rival entirely.

“I don’t regret accepting this challenge,”said Lee.“I am in shock, I admit that, but what’s done is done. I enjoyed this game and look forward to the next. I think I failed on the opening layout so if I do a better job on the opening aspect I think I will be able to increase my 9 of winning.”Lee was surprised both by how strong AlphaGo’s opening was, and by some 10moves.

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school when Robert cried out, "A fight! Let’s go and see!"

"No," said Henry. "Let us go home quietly and not meddle with(干涉) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also my parents are expecting to have dinner with me together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me."

"You are a coward," said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.

But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.

Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ sneer(嘲笑) and continued to go to school and study as usual. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him any more. Instead, he enjoyed playing with some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to a river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, and they did not even try to help him.
