二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、   After winning five Grammy trophies(格莱美奖) at this year’ awards ceremony, Finneas O'Connell became a name at the tip of everybody’s tongue - mostly in relation to his younger sister, pop superstar Billie Eilish, but increasingly in his own right too.

The 22-year-old Los Angeles native is most famously known to have produced and co-written his sister Eilish’s album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?.

Along the way, O'Connell has marched to his own beat and presented a sound that is unlike anything else that can be found currently on official music charts or on the airwaves. Weird-pop, Gothic-pop, Avant-pop(先锋派流行音乐), Art-pop. Even by using these definitive terms(称号), critics still can't pin down(解释清楚) O'Connell. And even if they try, be simply rejects the terms.

O'Connell and Eilish were home -schooled by their actor- musician parents. O'Connell entered show business as a child actor. From Bad Teacher and his mother’s Life Inside Out to comedy favorite Modern Family and musical TV series Glee, he knew not to let his personality get in the way of his acting roles.

Talent definitely runs in the family. O'Connell’s fondness for music was instilled(逐渐灌输) in him from a young age. “We have never stressed getting a job and making a living,” his father said, “If we modeled anything, it was being broke and artsy(附庸风雅的).”

Not forgetting his acting roots, O'Connell uses film as a metaphor(隐喻) to describe the current climate of music and has expressed this with singles-only releases. “Music singles are like [blockbuster] movies made by film studios to carry the independent films. There’s Avengers music. Even though I think Avengers is great, my favorite movie is The Social Network, I’d rather make music that feels kind of like that.”

O’Connell is working in music full-time now, preparing Eilish s next album and his own full-length album while experimenting and learning more production ideas and sounds. But Finneas the actor will not turn down acting gigs(临时工作) if an ideal role is offered.

1What can we say about Finneas O'Connell?

A.He has his own musical style. B.He prefers acting to writing music.

C.He is a hardworking and considerate man. D.He will only focus on music in the future.

2Which of the following is right?

A.Billie Eilish’s father loves her more.

B.Billie Bilish is an actor and singer now.

C.Finncas O'connell’s parents educated him at home.

D.Finneas O'connell’s mother wanted him to live on music.

3What can we infer from the article?

A.A good medicine tastes bitter. B.The role of gene is powerful.

C.Music is the mother of all arts. D.School education often ruins a talent.

4The author writes this article to__________.

A.express his admiration for a famous star B.report entertaining information to readers

C.emphasize the importance of family love D.discuss the secret to success with readers

27、It is found that American students spend less than 15% of their time in school. While there’s no doubt that school is important, a number of recent studies reminds us that parents are even more so. A study published earlier this month by researchers at North Carolina State University, for example, finds that parental involvement — checking homework, attending school meetings and events, discussing school activities at home — has a more powerful influence on students’ academic performance than anything about the school the students attend. Another study, published in the Review of Economics and Statistics, reports that the effort put forth by parents (reading stories aloud, meeting with teachers) has a bigger impact on their children’s educational achievement than the effort devoted by either teachers or the students themselves. And a third study concludes that schools would have to increase their spending by more than $1,000 per pupil in order to achieve the same results that are gained with parental involvement.

So parents matter. But it is also revealed in researches that parents, of all backgrounds, don’t need to buy expensive educational toys or digital devices for their kids in order to give them an advantage. They don’t need to drive their offspring (子孙,后代)to enrichment classes or test-preparation courses. What they need to do with their children is much simpler: talk.

But not just any talk. Recent research has indicated exactly what kinds of talk at home encourage children’s success at school. For example, a study conducted by researchers at the UCLA School of Public Health and published in the journal Pediatrics found that two-way adult-child conversations were six times as potent in promoting language development as the ones in which the adult did all the talking. Engaging in this reciprocal(双向的) back-and-forth gives children a chance to try out language for themselves, and also gives them the sense that their thoughts and opinions matter.

The content of parents’ conversations with kids matters, too. Children who hear talk about counting and numbers at home start school with much more extensive mathematical knowledge, report researchers from the University of Chicago. While the conversations parents have with their children change as kids grow older, the effect of these exchanges on academic achievement remains strong. Research finds that parents play an important role in what is called “academic socialization” — setting expectations and making connections between current behavior and future goals. Engaging in these sorts of conversations has a greater impact on educational accomplishment.

1Parents are even more important than schools because ______.

A. parental involvement makes up for what schools are not able to do

B. teachers and students themselves do not put in enough effort

C. parental involvement saves money for schools and the local government

D. students may well make greater achievements with parents' attention

2It can be inferred from the 2ndparagraph that ______.

A. educational toys are unaffordable nowadays

B. digital devices can give children an advantage

C. some parents believe in enrichment classes

D. talking with children is a very simple task

3The word "potent" is closest in meaning to ______.

A. powerful B. difficult C. necessary D. resistant

4Which of the following will more encourage children's success at school according to the passage?

A. Parents order their children to stop playing video games.

B. Parents discuss with their children the possible future career.

C. Parents lecture their children on getting too low marks on tests.

D. Parents introduce colleges around the US to their children.

28、David Attenborough's Dynasties takes viewers to Antarctica to follow the emperor penguin. Why are there penguins in Antarctica and not the Arctic? The simple answer is that there are too many predators(食肉动物) in the Arctic. Animals who call the Arctic their home include the polar bear, arctic fox, grey wolf, etc. There are not many animals that could kill penguins in the Antarctic, which has allowed the species to survive there.

Different types of penguins can be found in Argentina, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, and South Africa. The only species of penguin that lives north of the equator is the Galapagos Penguin.

Penguins have lived in the South Pole for thousands of years but once actually lived in the Arctic. According to Aurora Expeditions: "During the 19th century, several research groups tried to introduce penguins into the Arctic environment. However, because of the predators, the penguins couldn’t protect the eggs in their nest and the entire population died out after a couple of years.”

A now extinct flightless bird called the great auk was the only modern species in the genus (属) Pinguinus and its natural habitat was the North Pole. Although not closely related to penguins, the great auk shared many similarities such as a physical resemblance and being flightless. The species became extinct in the middle of the 19th century due to predation by polar bears and they were also prized by hunters for their feathers and eggs.

The documentary was filmed at Atka Bay in Antarctica. 11, 000 birds gather on the newly frozen sea ice in Atka Bay every year to face the Antarctic winter. Director Miles Barton said: "I think the film will be a surprise. I don't think anyone has shown just what a huge struggle it is for emperor penguins to bring up their chicks in what must be the worst condition on earth.”

【1】What can we learn about penguins?

A.They are nearly extinct in the Arctic.

B.They have no enemies in the Antarctic.

C.Some of them live in the hottest part of the earth

D.It is a challenge for emperor penguins to survive in the Antarctic.

【4】What does the text mainly talk about?

A.The protection of the Antarctic.

B.How a film about penguins is created

C.Why there are no penguins in the Arctic.

D.The introduction of different kinds of penguins.

29、   Communicating effectively means more than knowing what to say and when to say it. Communication involves the subtle signals your body language sends to those who are watching. Here are some common body actions and the impressions they create:

● Fiddling (好动) — Playing with your watch or a pen looks like you’re bored or impatient.

● Clock watching — It looks like you’re to move on to something else.

● Tapping — Tapping your feet or fingers suggests you are impatient or nervous.

● Staring — An unblinking (不眨眼的) stare conveys threatening or violent behaviour.

● Legs crossed or body hunched (弓背,耸肩) — Closing up your body profile — becoming smaller — looks like you lack confidence.

● Arms crossed — If you keep your arms folded during communication, you appear to be defending yourself against the others.

● Touching your face — When you have your hand in front of your mouth, you appear very shy.

● Rubbing your nose, looking away — People who are lying often rub their nose or look away when speaking.

● No eye contact — If you won’t look the other speaker in the eye, you seem to have low interest or a lack of confidence. (Don’t forget staring above.)

How you communicate with your body language is just as important as what you say. Watch your body language and control the unconscious messages you might be sending.

32、   If you’re visiting Florence, Italy, you’ve got to see the world-famous Uffizi Gallery. But why? Because that’s what _______ does in Florence? Because you feel it _______ to post a selfie in front of the Italian painter Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus (《维纳斯的诞生》)?

Those are obviously _______ reasons. We shouldn’t go to places because they’re world-famous; instead, we should go to fully _______ what made them world-famous. But that requires a well-planned visit, not just following the _______ , taking pictures and checking it off your wish list.

For example, you cannot visit the crown of Lady Liberty (自由女神像的别称) at all without serious _______ .” On busy days, we’re taking 25,000 people on a small island, and only 500 a day get to the crown,” said Michael Amato, the lead park ranger (管理人) for the Statue of Liberty National Monument, “Right now we’re sold out until two months later”. Still, a lot can _______ before you actually go on the trip. “Keep up to date,” said Jade McKellar, the director of visitor experiences at the Sydney Opera House. “_______ us on social media and sign up for our newsletter.” Even without a booking, visitors can often buy tickets for events that run 363 days a year. But like many sites, a true visit means spending a full day, something a(n) __________ traveller might be unwilling to do.

Another reason to set aside more time: Visitors can check out the less famous but equally worthwhile — often beautifully complementary (互补的) sites __________. THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

My daughter

(A story told by a father, a famous actor)

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.
