27、Trapped under ruins after the Iran earthquake, Dan Woolley believed he was going to die. But rather than giving up, the film-maker managed to look up ways to treat his injuries on his iPhone beneath the earth. He also wrote a moving diary for his family, allowing them to read his last messages of love and comforting them after his death. Instead, he was pulled from the ruins after a week--- and would soon meet his family.

Mr. Woolley, from Colorado Springs, America, had raveled to Iran with his colleague David Hames. Both had been working for Charity Compassion International. He was in the hotel when the earthquake struck. Buried under tons of ruins, the film-maker downloaded a first aid application to his iPhone. He used the instructions from the app to treat the serious bleeding. He used his shirt to tie off the injury on his leg and a sock to bandage the back of his head. The app advised him not to go to sleep if he felt sleepy. Mr. Woolley set his phone alarm to go off every 20 minutes to keep him awake.

Mr Woolley used a small black notebook to write messages to his family, including his son and wife. He had thought his relatives would read them after he was dead.

“ I was in a big accident. Don’t be upset at God,” he wrote. “ I’m still praying that God will get me out, but he may not. But he will always take care of you.”

Mr Woolley was eventually rescued by a French rescue team. After being flown to Miami for surgery, he said, “I cried. At that time I wanted to use that time to do everything I could for my family. I always wanted to survive, but I knew that was something that I couldn’t control.”

New technology really played a huge part in our life.

28、Do you know that a fast reader can get the ideas better than a slow reader can? Of course, you save time by reading fast, but this is not the main reason for fast reading. The main reason is that you understand better what you are reading when you read fast.

As your eyes move along the lines of print, they make fixation(注视) or pauses stop. It is important that you see several words at a fixation. It is also important that your eyes leave a group of words quickly and move on to another group. The number of letters or words that you see at a fixation is called your eye span. Pay more attention to improving your rate(率) of reading. With practice, you can learn to read faster than you usually read.

The way in which you read always depends on what you are reading and for what purpose. You should know the different ways of reading so that you can use whatever method is necessary. Here are four ways of reading:

(1) Skimming is an important kind of reading. This method can be used when you wish to review something that you have forgotten. You can skim to get the main points.

(2) Rapid(快速的) first reading and then rereading certain parts carefully is important. You may use this type of reading to study a science lesson or a history lesson.

(3) You need to do careful reading and rereading sometimes. This type of reading is necessary for making an intensive(专心) study of your school subjects, solving maths problems or reading directions.

(4) Rapid reading is used when reading stories for enjoyment. You may also do rapid reading when reviewing materials that you already know well.

【1】The main reason for reading fast is that you can ________.

A.understand better.

B.save time

C.get the ideas.

D.learn well

A.eyesight

A.the method that you like

B.your reading material

C.your reading purpose

D.both B and C

【4】Careful reading is an important kind of reading ________.

A.when you read a story for enjoyment

B.when you review a lesson that you already know well

C.when you read the directions before using a camera which is very expensive

D.when you wish to find a lost place that you have read

29、If you think that running marathons (马拉松) will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock. According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do no exercise at all.

Scientists in Denmark have been studying 1,000 joggers(慢跑者)and non-joggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a proper pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die.The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non-joggers. The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes the heart and arteries(动脉)structural changes. Over time, this can cause serious injuries.

Peter Schnohr, a researcher in Copenhagen, said, “If your goal is to decrease the risk of death and improve life expectancy(预期寿命), jogging a few times a week at a proper pace is a good strategy. Anything more is just unnecessary, and it may be harmful.”

The implications(暗示)of this are that moderate forms of exercise such as tai chi, yoga and walking may be better for us than triathlons and long-distance running and cycling. According to Jacob Louis Marott, another researcher involved in the study, you don’t actually have to do that much to have a good impact on your health. And perhaps you shouldn’t actually do too much.
