二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Lunar New Year used to be a daylong celebration for us. My parents tried really hard to recreate the season for my sisters and me here in America. On New Year's day, my family, including all my uncles, aunts, and cousins, dressed in new clothes, gathered at my grandma's house. Kids were pulled out of school, and adults took the day off. The celebration lasted throughout the day and late into the night, with one tradition following another.

Fast-forward to 2019: My grandma has passed away, the adults are elderly, and the kids have grown up and are living their own life. The Lunar New Year celebration is no longer as elaborate (精心计划的) as it used to be. As we melt into American culture, the "olden ways", as we call them, have fallen away. Life seems to have got busier and much more complex, but I often feel something is missing.

For us first-generation kids, it is often easier to let go of the traditions and customs of our parents'. They don't mean as much to us as they do for them. At the same time, they are still a part of our culture. I realized that the diaspora (流散) of young Asian Americans in the United States is not unique to me. It is an ongoing inner struggle that we all wrestle with. My Asian features and skin color do not entirely define who I am. I am as much a "hamburger" guy as a "rice" individual. I can't quite fully claim that I am an American and not fully Asian. There isn't really a check box that I can mark. I am Chinese-Vietnamese-Asian-American.

I now have two little boys. It saddens me to think they will never be able to experience what my sisters and I did as little kids during this holiday. Recently, for the first time, I've hung up Lunar New Year decorations around the house and replaced our Christmas wreath (花环) on the front door with decorative firecrackers. In a way, my sons are forcing me to slow down and explore my heritage.

I suppose sometimes we need to look back in order to gain clarity on the path ahead.

22、   In 1972, a social worker named Sanjit Bunker Roy founded Barefoot College in Tilonia, Rajasthan. Today the college trains women from villages for six months to build and maintain solar panels and other instruments. Barefoot College also offers education to the younger generation both during the day and at its solar bridge schools that meet by lamplight at night.

The philosophy of Barefoot College is largely inspired by the principles of Gandhi, starting with equality beyond caste (种姓), gender or religion. As a matter of fact, women are prioritized (优先考虑) as an underserved population that is essential to bringing villages together. Another central principle of the college is self-reliance, teaching students to support and think for themselves.

After the college’s female students have completed their half-year of training, they return to their villages where they wait for solar panel parts to arrive from the college. Once they have all the pieces they need, they construct the panels and begin collecting solar energy. For each village, the college also provides solar lamps. Villagers can, in addition, order parts for other solar-powered devices, such as water heaters and cooking stoves. Once assembled, they and the lamps are powered by the solar panels.

The effect on the villages is huge. Before the solar panels and lamps arrived, villagers had only candles to light their homes. This prevented adults from doing serious work at night, and it made studying difficult for children as well. As for physicians, they had difficulty treating patients and performing operations at night because they had to rely on flashlights.

Now there is power for not only the electrical appliances that the college provides but also devices like televisions, radios and computers. For the first time, the villagers can even connect to the world through the Internet.

1What does this text explain about the college?

A.How it accomplishes its goals.

B.How its global efforts are funded.

C.How its founder hires employees.

D.How it works with the government.

2Which idea is communicated by the college to women?

A.They should be more involved in politics.

B.They don’t have to depend on others.

C.They aren’t educating their daughters enough.

D.They focus too much on their communities.

3Which role do the women play after they return to their villages?

A.They’re merchants. B.They’re composers.

C.They’re technicians. D.They’re journalists.

4In the past, what was hard to provide in villages after dark?

A.Dry shelter B.Clean water

C.Medical care D.Food supplies

23、The power of modern electronic media-the net, mobile phones and video games to capture the attention of the human mind particularly the young mind and then distract it, has lately become a subject of concern. We are, say the worriers, losing the ability to apply ourselves properly to a single task, like reading a book in its entirety or mastering a piece of music on an instrument with the result that our thinking is becoming shallower

Nicholas Carr, the American writer, has explored this theme for his new book The Shallows, in which he argues that new media are not just changing our habits but our brain too. It turns out that the mature human brain is not an immutable seat of personality and intellect but a changeable thing, subject to “neuroplasticity” (神经可塑性). When our activities alter so does the architecture of our brain “I’m not thinking the way I used to think,” writes Carr. “I feel it most strongly when I’m reading.” Years of internet use have, he suspects, dented his ability to read deeply to absorb himself in books: “My brain wasn’t just drifting. It was hungry. It was demanding to be fed the way the net fed it.” He describes getting fidgety when faced with a long text: “When we go online, we enter an environment that promotes cursory reading, hurried and distracted thinking, and superficial learning.”

Carr cites research by Gary Small, a professor of psychiatry at UCLA, who concluded that constant exposure to modern media strengthens new neural pathways while weakening older ones. Just five hours of internet use is enough to awaken previously dormant parts of the brain’s prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层), concluded Small. For Carr, this is proof that the net can rewire the mind. He sees dangers. Deep thought, the ability to immerse oneself in an area of study, to follow a narrative, to understand an argument and develop a critique, is giving way to skimming. Young users of the Internet are good at drawing together information for a school project, for example, but that does not mean they have digested it.

【1】The underlined word “dented” in paragraph 2 means ______.

A.strengthened

B.exhausted

C.stimulated

D.damaged

【2】In his new book, The Shallows, Nicholas Carr believes that ______.

A.five hours of net use can rewire the mind

B.modern electronic media help focus users attention on the task

C.electronic media have affected his fulfillment of reading books

D.our brain evolves when fed with information and knowledge from the net

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.The sharper the attention, the sharper the memory.

B.Nicholas Carr’s book on the subject is a bestseller.

C.Superficial thinking and learning are associated with the new media.

D.Years of internet use do harm to people’s management over multi-tasking.

【4】What is the overall danger of the Internet that Carr pointed out in the last paragraph?

A.Young users cannot digest information from the Internet.

B.Using the Internet will cause damage to our prefrontal cortex.

C.Constant internet use will impair our intensive reading ability

D.The Internet can waste young users’ time to an alarming extent

24、Brothers and sisters can actually boost your physical and mental health. Here’s how.

Having a younger sibling might make you slimmer. A study by University of Michigan found that children who were six or under when a new brother or sister arrived had a healthier BMI. Given that childhood weight issues can turn into adult weight problems, having a younger brother or sister might well resolve the annoyance.

Sisters can protect you from depression. Sisters, whether younger or older, help prevent their teenage siblings from feeling guilty, unloved, lonely, shy and fearful, according to a study from   Brigham University. That will benefit you even when you reach adulthood.

Having brothers and sisters makes you more charitable. The same research found that having siblings made you twice as likely to do good deeds. A study of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research found that if a sibling was warm and kind, the other sibling was likely to display the same qualities.

They’re a spirit booster in later life. Research has found that having a meaningful relationship with brothers and sisters when you’re older can lead to greater life satisfaction, greater psychological wellbeing, higher spirit and fewer depressive symptoms. That is vital as you enter old age.

They help you live longer. In a study from the American Sociological Association, older adults who described themselves as being “extremely close” to the family members they listed had a 6% chance of dying over the next five years, compared to a 14% risk for the people who reported not being very close to the family members listed.

Having good friends can bring many of the same benefits. We don’t all have brothers and sisters, or you might be distant from yours. Don’t panic; research also shows that having close friends can boost your health, wellbeing and longevity. Make friends by signing up to groups or classes and finding people who enjoy the same things as you.

【1】What does the underlined word “sibling” in paragraph 2 mean?

A.Brother or sister.

B.Parent.

C.Uncle or aunt.

D.Friend.

【2】How do sisters benefit a teen according to the study of Brigham University?

A.Acting like adults.

B.Having a good figure.

C.Enjoying mental health.

D.Being more independent.

【3】Whose study concludes that siblings help one with a longer lifespan?

A.Michigan University.

B.Brigham University.

C.The Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

D.The American Sociological Association.

【4】What’s the purpose of the passage?

A.To help teens make good friends.

B.To introduce the benefits of siblings.

C.To help keep good family relationship.

D.To advocate following siblings’ advice.
