二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、   When you eat fish, you probably eat it off a plate, using a fork. Well, the dolphins in Shark Bay, Australia, eat their fish from conch(海螺)shells!

Scientists have found some of these bottlenose dolphins(宽吻海豚)using their large beaks to trap fish in shells underwater. Then, carrying the shells to the surface, they shake out the fish into their mouths and eat them. Clearly, using the conch shells allows the dolphins to catch more fish than they would be able to without such a tool. The technique has been called “conching”.

Researchers noticed dolphins engaging in the behavior a handful of times from 2007 to 2009. This  dolphin trend seemed to become popular.

Simon Allen, a scientist, was surprised to see the conching technique spreading. "In the lasts four months alone, the research team have seen and photographed the behavior no less than six times, possibly even seven," he said in a press release. He thinks the dolphins may be learning conching from one another.

Dolphins are known to be highly intelligent. The size of their brain is large in proportion(比例)to their body size. Compared with other animals, they have highly developed communication and social skills. This species of dolphin also uses other tools. They will break off pieces of sponges that grow in the ocean, for example, and use them to cover their beaks. This allows them to search for food on the ocean floor without hurting their noses.

Scientists are going to keep trying to catch the dolphins in the act of conching. They hope to see evidence of the dolphins teaching one another the technique. They also want to know how the dolphins get fish in the conch shell. Do they push the fish into the shell with their beaks? Or do they chase the fish into the shell before carrying them up to eat?

However they do it, Allen believes these dolphins to be particularly clever. "I wouldn't be too surprised to find such cunning ploys being adopted by Shark Bay's bottlenose dolphins," he said in  statement.

1The author develops the first paragraph by ______.

A. telling a story B. making n comparison

C. listing some facts D. offering an explanation

2The technique "conching" refers to the fact that ______.

A. dolphins eat fish together with shells

B. dolphins attract fish with the conch shells

C. dolphins use shells to catch fish for food

D. dolphins catch fish with their beaks

3According to Allen, the conching technique ______.

A. is spreading among sea animals quickly

B. has just been noticed at most 7 times

C. is sure to be learnt from one another

D. is becoming popular with dolphins

4What might be the most suitable title for the passage?

A. Dolphins play a trick on each other

B. Dolphins use shells as tools to catch food

C. Dolphins depend on tools to find food

D. Dolphins are the cleverest sea creature

27、   Four years into my Ph.D. program, my hands started to go numb each night as I slept. I didn't think much of it at the time. Then one night, while sound asleep, I somehow mistook my numb arm for a snake. I threw myself out of bed and woke in a panic. I later discovered that this nighttime event wasn't simply a strange dream.

At that time, I was working toward my Ph.D. and training to be a clinical psychologist. There was never enough time to occupy myself fully in my world. The exams constantly worried and even scared me.

Later that year, while discussing a patient's symptoms with a neurologist(神经学家), I realized that my anxiety could be the direct cause of the numbness in my hands. There was a certain irony(讽刺) in that realization. I'd spent years learning about psychological tools for dealing with stress and anxiety. But until then it never occurred to me that I, too, was experiencing an abnormal level of stress and anxiety.

Now, I specialize in helping take a healthier approach to dealing with the pressures of academics.I've seen firsthand how many of them possess inner voices demanding perfection and telling them that the sacrifices are necessary for success.

My message to those I work with is that being overworked and stressed-out is unhealthy.Achievements and health can be both gained. So, when your inner alarm bells send you a warning signal-or when snakes attack in the night-don't hesitate; take action.

1What happened to the author?

A.A snake bit him when he was sleeping.

B.He frequently had strange dreams at night.

C.He could do whatever he wanted in a clinic.

D.Numbness in his arms attacked him due to huge stress.

2The author's anxiety comes from

A.his academic work B.his lack of sleep

C.his social relationship D.his demand for perfection

3What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?

A.He now realizes academics is of no benefit.

B.A large number of people arc forced to be perfect.

C.Warning signals mean it's time to stop being over-stressed.

D.Achievements make it impossible for people to keep healthy.

28、Since 50 years ago, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.

Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michelle Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated (展示) a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts.

In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.

“Our brain has billions of nerve cells. These send signals through the spinal cord (脊髓) to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles,” Tavella says, “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control devices.”

The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp (头皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.

Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that interprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair.” He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time.

【1】What is BCI?

A.BCI is a technology that can link the human brain with computers.

B.BCI is a technology that can help to update computer systems.

C.BCI is a technology that can help the disabled to recover.

D.BCI is a technology that can control a person's thoughts.

【2】How did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory?

A.By controlling his muscles.

B.By talking to the machine.

C.By using his mind.

D.By moving his hand.

【3】Which of the following shows the path of the signals described in Paragraph 5?

A.scalp→computer→cap→wheelchair

B.scalp→cap→computer→wheelchair

C.computer→cap→scalp→wheelchair

D.cap→computer→scalp→wheelchair

【4】Which of the following would be the BEST title for the text?

A.Switzerland, the BCI Research Center

B.New Findings about How the Human Brain Works

C.Robotic Vehicles Could Help to Cure Brain Injuries

D.BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the Disabled

29、Ingvar Kamprad, who started IKEA as a teenager, died at the age of 91. He built one of the world’s biggest furniture companies.

There are two aspects of modern life that we have IKEA to thank for: flat-pack (平板包装) furniture and a shop layout.

IKEA first brought out its flat-pack furniture in the 1950s. Whether you love or hate this concept, it was a stroke of genius and an effective way of making the masses value the brand. Obvious aspects of it are cost-efficiency and the practicality of shipping.

When IKEA made the switch away from selling furniture that was already assembled, it was most likely unaware of how it would influence its consumers. Yet scientists have since managed to explain why consumers simply can’t get enough of building their own furniture. The simple act of touching products can increase your overall perceived (感知到的) value of the product. Couple this with the fact that the more effort a consumer has put into building something the more they like it.

Tests have shown that the actual act of putting something together (even though there may be sweat and tears involved) so that it becomes a complete object produces a much more favorable perception of that object than one would get from purchasing it in a complete form. The phenomenon is known as the IKEA effect. This effect is further improved by the fact that touch itself is related to emotion. This means that when we touch something the emotive part of our brain is activated so that we experience a close connection with the product emotionally. Thus, the happy assembler of that flat pack will, once finished, feel proud of their achievement and experience feelings of being closely connected to the item.

The layout of the IKEA store has also paved the way for a more creative way of thinking about how to guide customers. If you have ever visited one of its huge warehouse (仓库) stores, you may have gone in thinking you were going to buy a few items, only to find yourself coming out of the store with a shopping cart full of things. This is because of its circular design and one-way system. This design means you often can’t see what is coming next and fear you will miss something if you don’t continue all the way along the path.

IKEA’s creative ability to tap into the unconsciousness of consumers is undoubtedly a big part of its success — and also why it’s been copied by many other companies. Even though Ingvar Kamprad is no longer with us, IKEA has inherited from him a spirit of thinking outside the box to communicate with consumers. It will be interesting to see what follows next.

【1】What can we learn about Ingvar Kamprad?

A.He preferred to sell furniture rather than produce it.

B.He set up IKEA with the help of a couple of psychologists.

C.He was aware that his ideas would influence customers and other companies.

D.His idea of flat-pack furniture has made his company popular with the public.

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 1 into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 2. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 3. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.

The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their 4 screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they’re “the 5 of a small tablets and smart-phone, all in a single device”.

The technology could 6 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 7 available space.

In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 8 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?

According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 9. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 10 the majority of people.

But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.

Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”

One day, six-year-old Pete stepped out of his house to buy a lollipop(棒棒糖). It had rained all night long. But now the sun was shining, and the wind was blowing all over the pavements, blowing the rain away. Pete got on his tricycle(三轮脚踏车) and rode away. He felt excited since this was the first time he had gone to a shop on his tricycle. “I’ll ride through every puddle(水坑),” he said to himself.

He rode right through the first puddle, and splashes of water flew up in the air. But when he looked around, the puddle was still there. Behind his tricycle was a long black line. His front wheel had made it when it came out of the puddle. Pete noticed it and he was pleased. “I meant to do that,” he laughed. (But he hadn’t really.) So he rode right through the next puddle, and his black line shone behind him. But now, when he looked around, instead of one black line there were three, because this puddle was a very big one, and all three of the wheels had gone right into it. “I’m an engine-driver,” cried Pete. “And those are my railway lines. Oooo! Ooooooo!”

And he pedaled through every puddle he could see. Sometimes it was a small puddle, and then there was only one railway line. And sometimes it was a middle-sized puddle, and then there were two railway lines. And sometimes it was a very big puddle, with a lot of sky in it, and then the whole tricycle went through it, and there were three railway lines.

Suddenly Pete remembered that he was going to the shop on the corner to buy a lollipop. He put his hand in his pocket to make sure his two pennies were still there. One of them, two of them… Pete felt each of them with his fingers. “It was good of me to remember,” he told himself. “I’m a very good rememberer.”

41、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

The biggest threat posed by the covid-19 outbreak is,of course, the health risks it poses. But that is not the only risk: Avoidance, social distancing and panic may have great economic consequences, large enough to significantly slow growth, push up unemployment and ever drag the economy into a decline.

In this respect, people who suffer most are low-waged workers in low income households without paid leave. Many employers are already telling their white collar workers to work home. But low wage workers such as cleaners, food service workers and cashiers can’t work remotely. If these workers are temporarily free by specific quarantines(隔离), they won’t get paid. Their families tend to have little savings and live in a terrible state . Without work, these families face risks of intense economic hardship.

So we need a quickly effective policy that will maintain earnings for those who most depend on them. Many of these workers will be employed but temporarily free;others may lose their jobs as their employers try to manage shocks to their own business.

A better solution is for employers to continue paying workers directly during shutdowns, In most cases, employers will want the workers back once the threat of the viruses weaken, According to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, about 40 percent of private company workers paid below the median lack laid leave benefits.

As this crisis unfolds, the government in the world will be forced to launch some sort of quick response to reduce the effect of the virus. The question is: Will the measures be targeted to those who need them, or will it adopt the tax-cut mode? Millions of economic despair depend on policymakers getting this right.
