二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、   Recently, Kevin Smith, the director of Clerks and Chasing Amy, got kicked off of a Southwestern Airlines flight for being too fat. He used the social media tool Twitter to take pictures of himself in a seat, and criticized the airline’s decision. In reality, most airlines have had policies for “customers of size” for the past 25 years, but few airlines have used these rules because they don’t want the negative publicity.

While it is very politically incorrect to look down on people because of their age, sex, race, or religion, many people believe that obese people are discriminated(歧视) against all the time. For an extremely large person, it is very difficult to get around on normal-sized public transportation, such as buses or subways. Flying is not much easier because the seats are small even for a regular person, and airlines have been squeezing as many people as they can onto flights.

With the combination of September 11 terrorist attack and the economic downturn, the airline business hasn’t been doing very well. This means that airlines are trying to squeeze every dollar out of flyers. Recently, they started charging fees for overweight luggage and extra carry-on bags. It makes sense financially to make an overweight person purchase two tickets if they can’t fit into one seat, but airlines have to be cautious when dealing with this problem. Usually, someone that is heavy is already embarrassed about their weight, and making them pay extra can violate(侵犯)their rights.

Many people believe that those who are overweight have a lack of willpower and should be treated accordingly. In fact, there are many diseases that cause people to be overweight. Discriminating against someone because they are overweight is morally wrong. For airlines to show prejudice against anyone is bad for business.

In conclusion, airlines should consider the special needs of their customers to earn repeat business. If they force obese passengers to buy two tickets for one flight, they not only discriminate them, but they may lose a lot of business as well.

1Why is the director mentioned in the first paragraph?

A.To promote his movies. B.To ask him to lose weight.

C.To introduce the topic. D.To complain about the airline.

2Why do airlines tend to charge obese passengers two tickets?

A.Because they want them to lose weight.

B.Because they are facing financial problems.

C.Because they need to load more luggage and bags.

D.Because they prefer to protect regular passengers’ rights.

3What is the author’s opinion?

A.Overweight people deserve to be charged more.

B.Overweight people should have a stronger willpower.

C.It’s a good idea for airlines to charge less for a second ticket.

D.It’s bad practice for airlines to discriminate against obese people.

27、   It is generally believed that we are getting cleaned when we step under a shower. We are, but we’re also giving a home to lots of tiny little creatures we didn’t even know about. A showerhead (淋浴喷头) carries thousands of bacteria (细菌) called Mycobacterium. These can cause problems like coughs and tiredness, and a general feeling of poorliness (身体不舒服). When you turn on the water, the bacteria go from the showerhead onto and into your body.

This is a finding of Norman R. Pace and his team at the University of Colorado, in the US. The scientists investigated bacteria in all kinds of human environment, including showers. Pace's team looked at 45 showerheads in nine American cities. They discovered that 30 percent of them had large amounts of flying Mycobacterium.

But Pace said that they pose few threats to the health. Only those with a weak immune system might need to worry. He told the New York Times that the bacteria are not as unpleasant as might be thought. He said that having a shower is no more dangerous than anything else we do in the morning.

But for those who feel sick about the idea of all those microorganisms (微生物), he had some advice. Let the water run for 30 seconds before getting into the shower. Why? The number of bacteria is smaller than that when the water is just turned on. If that seems like a waste of water, he added that you could also change your showerhead every few months.

However, Pace had good news too. He has also been testing the air in US subways. Apart from iron particles (粒子), which are ground off the track by the wheels of trains, subway air is fresh. The reason is that a train’s movement pumps fresh outdoor air into the tunnels.

Pace explained that he wanted to understand the natural microbial environments of public places. This kind of knowledge might help discover the microbes (细菌) to be used in a bioterrorist (生物恐怖分子) attack.

【1】From the finding of Norman R. Pace, after taking a shower, we might cough or feel tired because ________.

A.it’s easy to get a cold when taking a bath

A.having a shower in the morning is more dangerous than at other time

B.the bacteria always threat people’s health

C.people with a strong immune system needn’t fear those microorganisms.

D.it is better to do some exercise in the morning than have a shower

【3】The underlined word “pose” in the third paragraph probably means “________”.

A.cause

B.avoid

C.describe

D.promise

【4】What leads to fresh air in US subways?

A.The train’s movement.

B.Iron particles.

C.Train wheels.

28、"Where there are Chinese speakers, there are his readers." That sentence highlights the huge influence of Louis Cha –Zha Liangyong, better known by his penname Jin Yong, one of the most influential Chinese novelists. Over 300 million copies of his books have been sold in the Chinese-speaking world alone.

Cha died on Tuesday afternoon, at the age of 94 in Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital, surrounded by family members, according to sources close to him. This news recorded 1.27 billion views, slightly less than China's population, on Sina Weibo.

In 1955, Cha published his first wuxia novel The Book and the Sword in the then New Evening Post using the penname Jin Yong. He wrote 15 popular wuxia novels, his last, The Deer and the Cauldron, was published in 1972. His novels have been made into films, TV and radio series, and deeply influenced the cultural development of Chinese-speaking communities around the world.

Cha also co-founded Hong Kong's major Chinese-language newspaper Ming Pao in 1959, and served as its editor-in-chief until retiring in 1989. During those 30 years, he wrote more than 7,000 editorials, covering a variety of global and domestic topics.

In May, 1967, when there were violent conflicts between the local police and some striking workers in Hong Kong, Cha wrote editorials all week calling for an end to the violence and for society to unite. In a most important of them, he wrote:

"We come from all regions and now we are one community. Hong Kong is home to us all."

In their condolences to his family, many people called Cha a "hero" even though he considered himself a writer of hero stories.

That's because of the humanistic concerns in both his novels and his newspaper articles. In all his wuxia stories, he shows a strong anti-war tendency. In The Legend of the Condor Heroes, one of his most famous novels, he wrote how Genghis Khan was moved by the hero's words and regretted his killings before his death.

【1】Which of the following best describes Cha's wuxia novels?

A.They are the most popular novels in China.

B.Most of them were published in the then New Evening Post.

C.More than 3,000 million copies of his books have been sold in China.

D.They had a huge influence on Chinese speakers in the world.

【2】Why did people call Cha a "hero"?

A.Because he wrote many stories about heroes.

B.Because he once stopped the conflicts in Hong Kong.

C.Because he was very successful in his career.

D.Because he conveyed humanistic value in his works.

【3】What is the authors’ purpose in writing the text?

A.To highlight Cha's influence on Hong Kong.

B.To introduce the Wuxia novels written by Cha.

C.To remember Cha as a great writer and editor.

D.To promote the values held by Cha.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.
