二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Parents often think that their kids should be good at studies and do well in sports. That’s usually the case because parents feel that could get their children admission to top colleges. However, Melissa and Mark Wimmer think differently.

Their 14-year-old son, Mike, is a prodigy. He is a member of Mensa, which is the world’s top IQ club. He completed his high school, associate’s and bachelor’s degrees all in three years. That’s not all. He also ran two tech companies, founded a third one that works towards controlling the population of lionfish, an invasive (入侵的) species.

But the parents are proud that they were able to help Mike with his social skills along with his intellectual skills. Melissa told CNBC that people expected “Young Sheldon” before they met her son. Young Sheldon is a television show about a child talent who is an indoor man and lacks social skills. “But once they talk to Mike, they understand that he’s just a normal 14-year-old that happens to be able to do amazing things,” said Melissa.

Mark and Melissa got to know about their child’s intelligence when he entered preschool. A child psychologist told them that their son would need a different course to support his fast-track development. Many parents aren’t comfortable with putting their children with 18-year-olds, but Mike’s parents saw the value in letting their child go through it. “I wanted him to be social and be able to deal with all the different personalities in the classrooms with older children,” said Melissa.

The parents shared that they were able to do this by letting Mike find his own voice and put it to use. “We let him order food when he’s 3 or 4 from the waiter or waitress and introduce himself to people. Those kinds of things are done to encourage him to engage with everyone else and be more comfortable talking to others outside of our environment,” said Melissa.

Thanks to his parents, Mike has learned to get along with young and old alike.

【1】What do the underlined words “a prodigy” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.A gifted person.

B.A famous student.

C.A brilliant biologist.

D.A successful businessman.

【2】What can we infer about the child in the show Young Sheldon?

A.He likes to make friends.

B.He is a well-rounded man.

C.He is a popular child actor.

D.He is poor at dealing with people.

【3】How did Mark and Melissa discover Mike’s high intelligence?

A.Through a recommendation from a child psychologist.

B.Through observing Mike’s behavior in preschool.

C.Through participating in a special educational program.

D.Through the information provided by Mike’s school teachers.

【4】What do Mike’s parents do to improve his social skills?

A.Teach him some communication rules.

B.Encourage him to speak in class.

C.Place him in social situations.

D.Let him go to school alone.

22、   What I used to find attractive about journalism was that it brought you into contact with a huge range of interesting people, or at least people to whom interesting things had happened. But is that true? If I were coming in now, would I find journalism as attractive a job as when I first earned my pay- cheque 30 years ago?

The problem is the impact of the internet on how we write our stories. We all know the benefits that the web has provided. It has enabled journalists, along with everyone else, to find instant answers to almost any question, no matter how unusual. It has hugely quickened the gathering and spreading of news. And if the appearance of informed and readable amateur “bloggers” has forced journalists - the supposed professionals - to sharpen up our act, so much the better.

But the revolution has brought one huge negative pressure on journalists. Because the internet seems to include everything, we are deeply addicted to it. Now we spend most of our working hours in our offices, staring at screen. Oral contact with people in the outside world is heavily reduced. Face-to-face communication seems so 20th-century, such a waste of time.

This attitude not only limits the journalist’s ability to understand the complexities of the world. It also leads to what I call “hall of mirrors” reporting, in which the media village chews and chews on the same few subjects, which are often of far more interest to media staff than ordinary people.

This isn’t a cry for the days when journalists spent half their week talking to people. But it’s a request for those who claim to report the world’s affairs to get out more - to experience life at first hand, or at least to talk regularly with those who do. What many journalists report now is not reality, but virtual reality: human existence as known through a computer screen.

But perhaps that’s the way humanity in general is going. It would be funny if the communication revolution of the past 20 years ended up killing the greatest form of communication ever developed. “We should start a Campaign for Real Conversation,” I said to a colleague the other morning. “Good idea,” he replied. “Send me an e-mail.”

1What benefits has the internet brought to journalism according to the article?

a variety of information

fast speed of collecting and spreading news

appearance of bloggers

better written news stories

A.①② B.②③ C.②④ D.①④

2The underlined phrase “the greatest form of communication” refers to ____.

D.“hall of mirrors” reporting

3The author thinks ____ in the future.

A.the internet will promote the journalism industry

B.more and more journalists will go out to experience life

C.journalists will do the same as they do now

D.the internet will put an end to the journalism industry

23、If you walk around any large city, you’ll find a coffee shop on every corner. Many shops offer comfortable sofas, large screen televisions and sometimes even live music. More and more teenagers are hanging out there. My pre-teen has already done so after school once a month, but she always orders fruit juice. I think she would drink coffee sooner or later, so I started doing some research online.

I found that coffee in moderation (适度) could be safe, but one thing that was constant online was the chance of becoming addicted to coffee. Coffee is one step up from soda but still not as dangerous as energy drinks or alcohol. Still, any addiction is hard to break, so I needed to come up with a plan that would protect my child.

Coffee shops offer a safe place for teenagers to hang out. As like anything else you let your children do, you need to set limits. Drinking coffee while socializing once or twice a week won’t cause a severe caffeine addiction. However, you should avoid allowing a cup of coffee every morning and ensure they get adequate sleep each night, which will make them less likely to feel the need to drink coffee.

As parents, we have responsibility to set a good example. If you’re addicted to caffeine, it’s time to start monitoring your intake. If you drink much water and keep healthier drink options in your fridge and at your dinner table, your teenager will follow you. I drink much water and so do both my children.________________________________________________.

As a mother, I’m ready to allow my child to try coffee and we’ll talk about it and discuss the pros and cons of consuming this. I feel open communication is vital in helping them make good decisions. Although the decision to drink coffee doesn’t pose the same dangers as underage drinking, it still deserves a thoughtful conversation.

1The author began to do research on coffee in order to _____

A. offer some good advice to coffee shops

B. guide her daughter to drink coffee properly

C. stop her daughter hanging out in coffee shops

D. let her daughter believe that fruit juice is healthy

2According to the passage, if teenagers have enough sleep, they_____

C. won’t drink coffee forever

D. will drink water instead of coffee

A. The author’s children don’t like to talk with her.

B. The author thinks a good example functions better.

4Which of the following statements agrees with the author’s opinion according to the passage?

A. Teenagers should be stopped from entering coffee shops.

B. Coffee shops should not offer many options to teenagers.

C. Teenagers’ activities in coffee shops should be limited strictly.

D. Parents should not force their children to stop drinking coffee.

24、In the future we might live somewhere other than Earth, like Mars. Some people ask how this will be possible. Well, Mars is in fact a lot the same as the earth. The days are almost the same as those on the earth. However, the two planets vary in temperature.

Since there is mostly carbon dioxide on Mars, it would be quite difficult for a human to just land on it. So, special types of homes and space suits have to be designed. The space suits should be almost like the ones astronauts use now, and except that they have to be warmer so that the astronauts can survive the cold temperatures. The space suits must also be able to withstand (承受) high pressure and potentially dangerous radiation that can kill.

The houses should be similar to our homes today with a slight difference. All of the houses and other buildings should be built inside a large dome (圆顶状物) or bubble. The domes should be made out of glass, and would also be able to prevent radiation from affecting the people inside. The domes will be connected to a machine (like plants which turn carbon dioxide into oxygen).

With Mars’ population growing, how would the people on its surface get fresh food and water? Just like humans use domes, they can also use domes to grow plants. However, the domes where the plants are grown must be built to expand. Once we upgrade the domes to a larger size then we can grow more food by cultivating (种植) more plants. To get the food or come in connect with other domes, there will be long narrow tunnels like roads that connect to each dome separating them by several doors so that the pressure in each dome can remain the same.

On Mars, so many other things are available to us. As humans, we can have access to rare and fairly expensive metals that aren’t very easy to get hold of on Earth, and a colony on Mars enhances (提高) our chances of finding these metals. So when someone here on Earth says that going to Mars is impossible, please tell them that they’ll never know it until they try and they may try very soon. After all it’s our future. Why not make it on Mars?

1It is difficult for humans to live on Mars because of all the following EXCEPT _________.

A. too much radiation   B. cold temperature

C. lack of enough oxygen   D. lack of houses

2One of the reasons why we are eager to explore Mars may be that _________.

A. we can find rare and expensive metals there easily

B. we’ll get too bored to live on the earth in the future

C. our technology will become much advanced

D. we want to know more about the unknown world

3What is the author’s attitude towards living on Mars? _________.

A. Pessimistic   B. Uncertain   C. Optimistic   D. Opposed
