26、Why Can’t People Stop Touching Museum Exhibits (展品)?
When visiting the British Museum, you can see visitors touch ancient bowls even though the museum rules say no touching is allowed. Museum guards say it’s impossible to stop people from breaking the no-touch rule. 【1】
Most museum-going is still a mainly visual (视觉的) experience for visitors to admire the artworks. 【2】 But over the past few years, more and more museums have been working to include additional senses, like sounds and smells. But touch, especially, is only allowed in certain areas, like the Louvre’s Touch Gallery, or the British Museum’s Hands On Desks.
【3】 Before there were museums, there were curiosity rooms filled with a collection of interesting objects from around the world. When people visited the collection, the objects were passed around. Museums continued with this spirit of openness at first.
But as museums grew, the spirit no longer existed. When you’ve got 4 million visitors a year, you can hardly have every body touching something. People are awkward and likely to damage the artworks. So the rule against touching artworks makes great sense. Smaller museums still sometimes encourage visitors to touch their objects. 【4】
Why are we so unwilling to keep our hands to ourselves? Some people just want to make sure the artworks are real. But there’s a larger truth. 【5】 Visitors say that they want to feel how deep an engraving (雕刻) goes, so as to better understand the artistic skills. In this way, touching is part of trying to somehow make contact with the past.
A.Touch was allowed in museums at first.
B.It helps to show respect for the ancient artists.
C.You stop 100 people touching and there are 200 more.
D.Visitors learn more about objects from reading signs around.
E.You can’t really learn more about objects unless you touch them.
F.But the bigger ones prefer to advertise themselves as no touching.
G.Museums have come a long way since the time of the curiosity room.
27、When my friend suggested going to the thrift shop, instantly I thought “I hope no one I know sees me”. It was the same when my cousin commented on my new furniture and Japanese fine-bone-china bowls and asked where I got them. They were from the local thrift shop but instead I said “from the antique shop”.
Many people in my Greek-Cypriot community would despise me if I said I shopped at the thrift shop. They may pity me, consider me poor, a failure. Immigrants sacrificed their families and homes for a better life. Buying a house and having enough money to live comfortably, to educate your children and see them also live comfortably, are a big part of the immigrant dream. But has this dream made us materialistic at the cost of our own planet?
Our love for purchasing the latest trendy clothes or furniture, then donating them when we are tired of them has become normal. I was once like this. But after watching the documentary The True Cost I learned donated clothes that don’t get sold are sent to developing nations, many of them ending up in landfills (垃圾填埋地). In addition, your new dress requires electricity and materials to make. But if you buy a second-hand dress, that’s one less dress in a landfill and one less new dress to be made.
A friend introduced me to the thrift shop only a few years ago. My first item was a dress she gifted me. It was lovely and I loved it. Nobody could tell it was second-hand. This opened me up to purchasing more second-hand high quality branded clothes. Once I dropped in on a friend and was impressed by how she decorated her apartment. “It’s all second-hand.” she said. I couldn’t believe it. The truth is a lot of things sold at the thrift shop are in new or almost new condition. That’s when I made the decision to only buy second—hand things.
Selling second-hand things isn’t anything new but what the planet needs is more buyers. There is so much excess production in the world. So stop feeling ashamed, and let’s get shopping.

28、 Carnival was originally a Catholic holiday celebrated from two days to two weeks. The festival has spread throughout the world. Here are some famous carnivals you should go to see if you have the chance.
1. Curasao, Netherland
This former territory of the Netherlands has a long parade with plenty of live soca and calypso music. No need to stand along the curb on this one though: you can plan and pay in advance to actually join one of the carnival groups and have a costume waiting for them when they arrive.
2. Nice, France
The Nice Carnival entered the history books in 1294 when a prince was in attendance, but it likely goes back much further. The two-week event helps the folks on the French Riviera survive the colder days of winter.
3. Venice, Italy
Venice's Carnival has been around since 1268. There is something so classic, cool and magical about a 5-day carnival in this city of canals. Ifs all about the fine masks which were traditionally made of glass and decorated with feathers.
4. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Who doesn't think Rio when they hear the word Carnival? It is the world's largest and perhaps the most extravagant. But this 7-day festival only dates back to 1723, a newcomer when compared to Europe. Beyond the formal parade there are also many local street celebrations. The music and dancing never seem to stop.

29、Everybody knows the saying “Two steps forward and three steps back”. That described my life pretty well as a single mom. I was raising two teenagers on a teacher’s aide’s salary. It wasn’t nearly enough to cover the bills, so I moonlighted as a waitress. Every time I thought that I had found a solution to my money worries, something would fall through and I would end up feeling worse off than before.
The next evening at the restaurant I tried on my apron, wishing I could be home with my kids. I walked up to my first table. Around it was a cheerful older couple. The woman gave me a smile that warmed me. I couldn’t help but notice her unusual glass ring. “What a beautiful ring,” I said. We chatted for a minute then I took their order and left. When I came back with their drinks, the woman held out her ring. “I would like to give this to you,” she said.
“Oh, no, I couldn’t,” I said, embarrassed.
She gently placed the ring in my hand and closed my fingers around it. “It’s yours,” she said. “Please accept it and your things are going to be okay.” Right there at their table in the middle of the restaurant I broke down in tears. “Thank you for giving me hope,” I said.
Long after that night, that sense of peace stayed with me. I knew the right job would come in time. Nine months later it did. I got a better position at another school and I started waitressing at a restaurant where I was allowed to spend more time with my kids.
Now in these tough times, I have money worries again, but they don’t get me down. I know things will turn out okay. And when I wear that unusual glass ring, I’m reminded I’m not alone.

32、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Today I was walking along the street when a homeless woman asked me for some change. I gave her some money and stopped to talk to her for a while.
I asked her about how she ended up on the street and if there was a shelter she could go to. She told me about some of her struggles. She told me that she left home at seventeen and had been homeless since then. She said that her bag with all her clothes and possessions was stolen the night before, while she was sleeping outside a church. Shesaid that she went to the day centre every day and they made calls to try to find her a shelter but nothing was available, as all shelters for women were full up. It had been like this for months. I listened to her and said a few kind words to her. After we spoke, I told her that it was really nice to meet her and wished her all the best.
I left feeling really sad and frustrated that there was nothing I could do to ease her situation. I have spoken to a few other homeless people and I have heard about how difficult it is to get a place in a shelter, or sometimes some shelters can be so unsafe that it is better for them to sleep on the streets.
I was on my way to my flower store. While trimming(修剪)these kinds of beautiful flowers, I thought about the lady I had just met and other homeless people I had spoken to. I thought it must be frustrating not to be able to experience so many of the day-to-day things that I and many others take for granted such as a roof over our heads, a bed to sleep in, money to buy food and even money to buy presents for a dear one.
