二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、The Power of a Name

My full name is Lily Myunghi M. When my parents gave me this name, they created an important part of my identity that will be part of me forever.

My first name, Lily, was inspired by a story my mom heard a long time ago. Some people wanted to get rid of their tiger lilies, so they dug a deep, deep hole and threw the tiger lily plants in. For years, they felt they had succeeded in killing the lilies. But one spring, strong, green stocks rose to the surface. My mom named me Lily because she hoped for a beautiful daughter, who would also be strong and resilient, just like those orange blossomed lily plants.

My middle name is Myunghi. My mom, who is of Korean heritage, wanted to honor our Asian roots. The middle name means "clear-eyed girl" in Korean. My parents chose it because they believe life is difficult, and they hoped being "clear-eyed" would help me find my way in the world.

However, in English, Myunghi loses its beautiful meaning. It becomes the hesitation on people's faces as they stumble over its mere two syllables(音节). It becomes the surprised expressions of classmates who have never heard a name anything like it before It becomes a blushing(脸红的)little girl, embarrassed by her own name, a name that her parents put so much thought into.

When I was younger, I hid my middle name, pre tending it didn't exist. Looking back, I pity the girl who was too ashamed to reveal her full name to anyone.

My grandparents were raised in Korea, where parents take great care choosing a name with a meaning that will help their child through life. My grandparents were born into the Japanese Occupation of Korea and assigned Japanese names, which stripped(剥夺) away their cultural identities bit by bit.

I've grown to love and appreciate my name. I no longer hide my name, but instead, proudly announce it, since my grandparents could not. I accept this special part of my identity that was chosen especially for me.

My full name is Lily Myunghi M. It paints a magnificent picture of unconditional love, hope, and heritage coming together to form a girl. And that girl, is me.

1We can know from the story that tiger lilies

A. are strong plants

B. are green stocks

C. have white blossoms

D. grow in deep holes

2Why did the author try to hide her middle name when she was younger?

A. She was ashamed of her Asian roots.

B. She felt awkward about her unusual name.

C. She felt it difficult to pronounce the name.

D. She was too shy to fit in with her classmates.

3What does the author intend to tell us?

A. A good name brings a bright future.

B. Her name helps to keep her identity.

C. She appreciates the love from her parents.

D. Parents often pick an unusual name for the child.

28、Teenagers who talk on the cell phone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test. That’s the finding of a new study. That memory impairment might be one side effect of the radiation (放射线) that phones use to keep us connected while we’re on the go.

Nearly 700 Swiss teens took part in a test of figural memory. This type helps us remember abstract (抽象的) symbols and shapes, explains Milena Foerster. The teens took memory tests twice, one year apart. Each time, they had one minute to remember 13 pairs of abstract shapes. Then they were shown one item from each pair and asked to match it with one of the five choices. The study volunteers also took a test of verbal memory. That’s the ability to remember words. The two memory tests are part of an intelligence test. The researchers also surveyed the teens on how they use cell phones. And they got call records from phone companies. The researchers used those records to figure out how long the teens were using their phones. This allowed the researchers to work out how big a radiation exposure (接触) each person could have got while talking.

A phone user’s exposure to the radiation can differ widely. Some teens talk on their phones more than others. People also hold their phones differently. If the phone is close to the ear, more radiation may enter the body, Foerster notes. Even the type of network signal that a phone uses can matter. Much of Switzerland was using an older “second-generation” type of cell phone networks, the study reports. Many phone carriers (通讯公司) have moved away from such networks. And more companies plan to update their networks within the next few years.

The teens’ scores in the figural memory tests were roughly the same from one year to the next. But those who normally held their phones near the right ears, and who were also exposed to higher levels of radiation, scored a little bit worse after a year. No group of teens showed big changes on the verbal memory test. Why might one type of memory be linked to cell phone use, but not another? Foerster thinks it could have to do with where different memory centers sit in the brain. The site that deals with the ability to remember shapes is near the right ear.

【1】According to Paragraph 2, which of the following is TRUE?

A.The teens took two types of memory tests four times in total.

B.The teens needed to report the average time spent on their phones.

C.Researchers paid little attention to the teens’ habits of using phones.

D.The teens’ ability of remembering words is shown in figural memory test.

【2】What can we infer from Paragraph 3?

A.How people hold their phones has no effect on their bodies.

B.Phone users can make more money with new networks.

C.The cell phone network type has little to do the cell phone use.

D.Radiation levels are affected by the cell phone network types.

【3】According to the study, teens who use their phones to their right ears a lot do worse in ________.

A.matching numbers

B.reading signals

C.remembering shapes

D.learning words

【4】What might be the best title for the text?

A.Cell phone use and safety warnings

B.Facts about cell phone use at school

C.Dangerous levels of cell phone use among teens

D.Teen’s cell phone use linked to memory problems

29、 Catch yourself daydreaming while washing the dishes again? If this happens often you probably have a pretty capable working memory and a sharper brain, new research suggests.

This mind wandering, it seems, actually gives your working memory a workout. Working memory is the mental work space that allows the brain to juggle multiple thoughts at the same time. The more working memory a person has, the more daydreaming they can do without forgetting the task at hand.

Researchers studied groups of people from the University of Wisconsin-Madison community, ranging in age from 18 to 65. The volunteers were asked to perform simple tasks, like pressing a button every time they took a breath or clicking in response to a letter popping up on a computer screen; these tasks were so easy that their minds were likely to wander, the researchers figured.

The researchers checked in periodically, asking the participants if their minds were on task or wandering. When the task was over, they measured each participant's working memory capacity by having them remember letters while doing math questions. Though all participants performed well on the task, the researchers noticed that the individuals who indicated their minds had wandered more than others also scored higher on the working memory test.

“What this study seems to suggest is that, when circumstances for the task aren't very difficult, people who have additional working memory resources allocate them to think about things other than what they're doing,” said Jonathan Smallwood, a study researcher of the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Science.

When our minds run out of working memory, these off-topic thoughts can take the main stage without us consciously meaning them to; for instance, arriving at home with no memory of the actual trip, or suddenly realizing that they've turned several pages in a book without understanding any of the words.

“It's almost like your attention was so absorbed in the mind wandering that there wasn't any left over to remember your goal to read,” study researcher Daniel Levinson, said in a statement. People with overall higher working memory were better able to stay focused when the task at hand required it. Those who had low working memory often had their thoughts drift away from the task, and did less well at it.

The findings add to past research suggesting these mind drifts can be positive moments. For instance, daydreaming has often been associated with creativity—researchers think that our most creative and inventive moments come when daydreaming. It's likely that the most intelligent among us also have high levels of working memory, Levinson noted.

【1】 The word “juggle” in the second paragraph can be replaced by “________”.

A. search B. understand C. handle   D. foresee

【2】What can be concluded from Jonathan Smallwood's words?

A. Absorbed in the mind wandering, your attention left no space for your goal.

B. On the working memory test, people with wandering minds will get high score.

C. Dealing with some easy jobs, people with higher working memory will daydream.

D. People who often have daydreams probably own a pretty capable working memory.

【3】 What is the best title of the passage?

A. Mind drifts are always positive.

B. Daydreaming is good for the mind.

C. Creative moments come with working memory.

D. The more daydreaming, the more effectively one works.
