25、   What do people do with their old, out of date but still useful computers? Most people don’t know what to do with them. Many old computers are put away in homes. Many more are simply thrown away as the rubbish.

Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony has agreed to help recycle old Sony products(产品). Dell, Hewlett Packard and other companies now also take back some old computers.

In some countries, laws have been passed, too. Computer companies have to pay for collecting and recycling their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay for the cost. That will encourage them to make computers that are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade(升级).

Yet while many people are throwing away good computers, others cannot afford them at all. Hundreds of organizations are working to solve this problem. They collect and repair old computers. Some also teach others how to repair computers. The computers then go to schools, charities(慈善团体) and people who need them. Giving a used computer to one of these organizations can turn one person’s rubbish into someone else’s useful things and cut down waste, too.

26、A Day at the Nature Center

Emma stared (凝视) sadly out of the window of the bus. Only 50 miles outside town was the farm. She thought about the farm all the time, especially the animals.

When her family sold the farm and moved to nearby town, Emma was excited, got to the new school, she felt very lonely.

With a sigh (叹气), Emma turned her attention back to the present. The bus came to a stop. “Welcome to the Leinweber Nature Center,” her teacher said. “A guide will give us a presentation about animals, and then you’ll help to feed the baby squirrels. Now, I want everyone to find a partner. ”

Emma didn’t have any friends yet — who would be her partner? Emma got close to Julia, a talkative and outgoing girl. “Could I be your partner?” Emma asked uncertainly.

“Sure,” said Julia warmly.

Together, the girls walked into the center. After the presentation, a keeper showed them how to hold the bottle of milk for baby squirreLs. Then the girls started to feed their own baby squirrels.

After the babies finished eating, the keeper asked, “Would you like to help feed the adult squirrels, too?”

Emma was quick to volunteer, but when the keeper opened the first cage, the squirrel inside jumped out. Emma remained calm (镇静的), held out her hand, made quiet sounds, and then quickly got it.

“Wow!” Julia said. “You’re always so quiet, I thought you were afraid of everything, but you are brave.”

“I know that when animals are frightened or excited, you have to stay calm. ”

The keeper nodded in agreement and asked Emma, “Would you be interested in volunteering to help out with the animals at the center?”

“Interested? I would love to work here! What an opportunity!” Emma was excited.

27、Shashiyu was once a poor village in Hebei Province, but now it has changed into a rich and livable place.

In the 1940s, villagers in Shashiyu had little food and few clothes, but they had a strong wish for a better life. Zhang Guishun, the Party secretary of Shashiyu, encouraged his villagers to do their best to pull themselves out of poverty. “In the ancient Chinese story, Yu Gong could move mountains with his strong will and hard work, why can’t we? Nobody was born to be poor?” Hearing his words, the villagers decided to make a difference.

Led by the Communist Party of China(中国共产党), the villagers carried water and soil to their village from faraway places to improve their land. From 1966 to 1971, they reclaimed(开垦)lots of land and greatly improved their life.

However, the village encountered a new problem two decades later as the environment became heavily polluted by chemical plants and mine refineries built in 1990s.

The polluting factories were shut down in 2004, and villagers started grape cultivation, which soon became a main industry in Shashiyu.

In 2009, the city-level government invested over 1 million yuan($152, 723) to change the village’s exhibition hall into a museum in memory of development efforts made by earlier generations.

After 10 years, the village was called “National Forest Village”.

Zhang said that the village started a yearly tourism festival in 2015 to attract travelers to pick grapes. “The grapes could be sold at a better price once Shashiyu becomes famous through this festival. Our villagers can then live even better lives,” he said.

【1】Why did Zhang Guishun use the story of Yu Gong to encourage the villagers?

A.Because Yu Gong had strong will and hard work.

B.Because Yu Gong was born poor too.

C.Because Yu Gong became rich at last.

【2】From 1966 to 1971, what did the villagers do to improve their living situation?

A.They planted grapes to earn money.
