24、Like many lovers of books, Mary and her husband, Richard Goldman, seldom walked past a bookstore without stopping to look inside. They often talked of opening their own store one day.
When Mary was in hospital with heart trouble in 1989, they decided it was time to get serious. Richard, who worked for a business company, expected to work for himself, and Mary needed to slow down from her job.
They started by talking to bookstore owners and researching the industry(产业). “We knew it had to be a specialty(专业) store because we couldn’t afford enough money,” says Mary. One idea came to her: She’d read somewhere that about 20 percent of books sold were mysteries, and many buyers spent more $300 a year on books. She and Richard were themselves mystery readers.
On Halloween 1992, they opened the Mystery Lovers Bookshop and Café near their home. With three children in college, the couple could not spend all the family’s money to start a shop. To pay the $100,000 cost, they drew some of their savings, borrowed from friends and from an bank.
The store only broke even in its first year, with only $120,000 in sales. But Mary was always coming up with new ways to attract(吸引) buyers. The shop had a coffee bar and it offered gifts to mystery lovers and provided dinners for book clubs that met in the store. She also invited some writers to discuss their stories.
Today Mystery Lovers makes sales of about $420,000 a year. After paying taxes, business costs and the six part-time sales workers, Richard and Mary together earn about $34,000.
“The job you love may not go hand in hand with a million-dollar income(收入)” says Richard. “This has always been about a pleasant life for ourselves, not about making a lot of money.”

26、It’s late at night. A car stops in the middle of a forest. After dropping off their three teenagers, the parents say “good luck” and drive away. The teenagers, totally lost, have to find their way back home by themselves. It may sound crazy to you, but this is an old tradition in the Netherlands called “dropping”. Dutch people believe children shouldn’t depend too much on their parents and should learn how to solve problems through activities like “dropping”.
However, for many other parents around the world, their top concern(担心) is their children’s safety. After all, why should they put their children in danger when there are many other ways to develop their independence? People have many different opinions about parenting. All parents want their children to be happy, healthy and successful. But some parents try too hard and become “helicopter(直升机) parents”, which is basically the opposite of “dropping”. They worry too much about their children and pay attention to everything they do—like helicopters flying over their children. In their eyes, children need to be protected all the time. But this might not be a good parenting style either, according to American parenting expert Kenneth Ginsburg. Good parents need to find a balance(平衡) between protecting their children and letting go. As Ginsburg writes, parents should “make sure their children don’t crash(碰撞) against the rocks, yet allow them to ride the waves, even if they get a little choppy(波涛汹涌的) sometimes.”

27、 A friend advised me not to choose Slovakia though he hadn't been there. Few guidebooks include the country.
However, I decided to take a trip to Eastern Slovakia. I always search for roads that are less traveled.
On the first day, I stayed in a hotel opposite a great church. Around the corner, there was a lively town center. Coffee shops were serving hot chocolate. The dumplings and snacks in restaurants were as delicious as any in Western Europe.
On the second day, I traveled to Spis Castle (城堡). It's about an hour's drive northwest of Kosice. Perhaps you've never heard of the name, but this is one of Central Europe's largest castles. Part of it was built in the 11th century. On the castle, I saw colorful fields, villages with red roofs (屋顶) and green hills. After that, I tried some local food there.
And the best was yet to come. Driving southeast, I arrived in Banska Stiavnica on the last day of my trip. It is a perfectly protected historical town. I went to a concert in a 15th-century church. At the town center, local people were celebrating a traditional festival. There were traditional shows and teaching of making dumplings. It was the most enjoyable moment of my trip.
Old towns, natural beauty, great castles and food—all at affordable prices and with no tourist crowds. Maybe it's time to rewrite the guidebooks.
