A runner should start to prepare for a marathon at least three months before. Preparation may include many hours of running at different speeds and changes in diet (饮食). During the training time the runner must eat a fit diet. The diet should have lots of things needed in training.
In the early days of training, runners run 80km per week. The running is increased every two or three weeks.
Two weeks before the marathon, the training programme becomes less, from 100km per week down to 60km and then to 30km in the final week. On the last two days they may not run at all.
Breakfast should be eaten at least three hours before the race. Easily digested (消化) food such as cereal (麦片), toast (烤面包) and scrambled egg (炒蛋) is the best, with as much fluid (液体) as possible. Runners should drink water about half an hour before the race to keep up the body fluid.

22、More than 1 billion people around the world are homeless. Now two companies make a plan to help out. They use 3-D printers (打印机) to make new houses.
A printer usually prints things on paper. But the 3-D printer works differently. Before building a house, the 3-D printer reads the picture of a house from a computer program first. Then it makes the materials (材料) soft to make certain shapes. Finally, the printer prints the house out, one layer (一层) at a time.
The 3-D printer is easy to use. Only a few workers are needed when it works. Also, the printer works quickly. It can build a house in one day.
The first 3-D-printed house was built in Texas, US. The house has a bedroom, a bathroom and a living room with large windows. By early 2019, the two companies plan to build a village of more than 100 3-D-printed houses.
Not everyone likes the idea, though. Lawrence Sass, a building expert, said, “The houses may be unsafe. When the wind blows strongly, those houses may come apart easily.”

23、 As space science develops, man has learned more and more about space. Space is not only amazing but also dangerous. While working in space, spacemen are facing danger as well as access. Scientists have found out that radiation(辐射) is the greatest danger to spacemen in space. When spacemen are working in space, they are in danger of radiation from the sun and other stars, which is bad for their health. The damage done by radiation won’t be discovered until their children or even grandchildren are born. Some special medicine may work a little, but no really helpful medicine has been found. Space junk is also thought to be a great danger to spacemen. It’s reported that there are 9,000 man-made things flying in space. About 30% of these are man-made satellites(卫星), 10% are spaceships, and the rest are space junk. An explosion(爆炸) in 1999 made a cloud of 300,000 fragments(碎片), each at least 4mm in size, and even a small piece of these knocked against a spaceship window and did some damage.
Scientists are watching and reporting any possible danger all the time. They are working on helpful ways to deal with space junk. Although space is really dangerous, it interests everyone on the earth. In the near future, it may become usual for people to spend a few days in a space hotel. We may even choose to leave the earth and live in space in a few years. So we should care for space and do something to help improve the space environment.
