21、It was about five in the morning in Ontario, Canada, when Donna Strickland’s phone rang. The Nobel Prize committee was on the line in Stockholm, calling to tell her she had won the prize in physics.
“I wondered if it was a joke, ” Strickland said in an interview with a Nobel official after the call. She had been asleep when the call arrived. “Something was wrong because it came so early in the morning. But then I knew it was the right day, and it would have been a cruel joke.”
Strickland, an associate professor at the University of Waterloo, shares the honor with two other scientists for their work in the 1980s in transforming lasers(激光) into tiny tools that today have countless application. The prize money $1.4 million will be shared among the three. Half the prize went to Strickland and her cooperator Gerard Mourou, a professor at the Ecole Poly technique in France. The other half was awarded to Arthur Ashkin, a retired physicist who worked at the famous Bell Labs in the United States.
Strickland’s win is historic in more than one way. It’s been over 55 years since a woman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1993, Marie Curie became the first-ever woman to win a Noble Prize in Physics. For the next 60 years, no women physicists were awarded. Maria Goeppert Mayer became the second woman physicist to win the Noble Prize in Physics in 1963.
Strickland herself was surprised to learn she was the third woman to receive the honor in physics. “Is that all, really? I thought there might have been more, ” she said at a press conference Tuesday. “We need to celebrate women physicists because we’re out there. Hopefully, in time, it will start to move forward at a faster rate.”

23、On a school trip to New York, our school had us wear name tags (牌) with our school name on it. Since all the attractions we visited were popular with school groups, the tags let the teachers know we should be with our group. If any of us separated from the group, teachers would quickly call us back.
Some students had tried to hide or throw away their name tags to avoid this, so our head teacher—a very strict lady—said that anyone found without the name tag would have to spend the rest of the trip staying with her at all times and then have a month’s worth of lockdown (禁闭) when we got back.
While we were all on a ferry (渡船), we were allowed to go around. While playing with friends, I didn’t realize it was my name tag until it was too far to reach. I started to freak out at once. I had never got into trouble at school before or had even a single punishment, and I would possibly face a month’s worth of them! After thinking for a moment, I finally decided to just tell the head teacher what had happened.
I went to the head teacher and explained very nervously to her. Instead of shouting at me, she took out another name tag and handed it to me. She said, “I have prepared several more name tags in case something unexpected happens.” Then she smiled at me, “Did you think you would get lockdown? Don’t worry, and that’s just for the trouble-makers in order to stop them losing it on purpose. I believe you’re a good kid. Don’t be worried about this. But be careful later.” When I heard these words, tears came to my eyes. What a kind teacher she is!

24、Earthquake rescue robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing. Their designers say that with these robots, rescue workers will be able to have more time to save more lives during an earthquake.
This robot looking like a helicopter(直升机) is called the flying robot . It's about 3 meters long, and it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions(作用)are to collect information from the air, and send goods of up to 30 kilos to people trapped by an earthquake. It has a high-definition 360-degree panoramic(全景的) camera. It can work day and night and is also able to send the latest pictures from the quake area.
Dr. Qi Juntong, a researcher at Chinese Academy of Science, said, 'Unlike other automatic machines, the most important feature of this flying robot is that it doesn't need a distant control. We just set the destination information on it, and then it takes off, and lands by itself. It flies as high as 3,000 meters, and as fast as 100 kilometers per hour. '
This robot has another different function --- it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers are unable to go. As well as a detector(探测器)that finds victims and detects poisonous gas, a camera is placed in the 3-meter-long robot, which can work in the dark. Another use for the rescuers is the supply bot, with its 10-meter-long pipe, people who are trapped in the ruins will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.
Experts have said that the robots will enter production and serve as part of the national earthquake rescue team as soon as next year.
