22、A frantic call came into Jimmy Gilleece's bar this past March.A newly married woman who had spent the afternoon at the dive beach bar couldn't find her wallet. She didn't care about her ID,credit cards,or $150 in cash---but her wedding ring was tucked inside.

Gilleece, 42, didn't like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place, Jimmy's at Red Dogs.So he set out to find the wallet. He spent hours searching footage from 16 different surveillance cameras, watching the woman's every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived. Within minutes,a young man in a hoodie approached the bench, shoved(乱放) something in his pocket, and walked off, Gilleece posted a clip on the bar's Facebook page.

Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17-year-old Rivers Prather. Prather admitted having taken the wallet and told Gilleece he'd done it because he hadn't eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich. Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the docks. There, they got to talking, and Prather revealed that he wasn't getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Gilleece took stock of Prather---his small stature, his ruddy cheeks---and saw him for what he was: more of a kid than a criminal. But the stakes were high. The police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could be facing felony charges."I had to help him somehow, Gilleece says. Gilleece recruited two local divers to search the waters where Prather had thrown the wallet. A crowd gathered to watch the two divers search in the strong current. More than an hour passed, with no sign of the ring. Gilleece grew worried. Each passing minute increased the chances that the police would arrest the young man.

And then a diver popped up. In his hand was the wallet, and inside was the ring. Cheers erupted from the spectators. When Gilleece called the wallet's owner, she burst into tears. She promptly dropped the felony charges against Prather for stealing the ring.“Most people would have given the footage to police, and he chose to help me," Prather said. “I say thank you to him every day."

23、Last Tuesday, a robotic ship called the Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) took off from Plymouth, England. Its mission (使命) was to recreate the 1620 crossing of the Atlantic by the Mayflower, which brought the first European settlers to the USA. But unlike the original Mayflower, there are no people on the MAS. Everything about the ship is designed to run automatically. The ship is guided by an artificial intelligence (AI) system called "AI Captain".

The MAS is a project run by a group called ProMare along with the computer company, IBM. The ship's electric motor is powered by solar energy. The goal of the project is to test different kinds of technologies for collecting information about the sea. If these can be handled by machines, it could be a big advance in ocean research.

Because the MAS didn't have to carry humans, its designers were free to think about how to make the best ship for the job. In addition to cameras and radar to help the ship guide itself, the ship is carrying many different kinds of tools and sensors. It has special listening devices which can detect whales and dolphins. It even has a special "tongue" which can report back on the chemicals in the water.

Last Friday morning, scientists tracking the ship noticed that it was going about half as fast as it should have been going. The AI Captain was working well, but there seemed to be something slowing the motor down. Since the ship had only covered 10% of the way across the Atlantic, the team decided to bring it back to Plymouth so they could fix the problem and send it out again. They sent the MAS instructions to turn back.

When the MAS finally does put out to sea again, it is expected to take about three weeks to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The fastest speed for the MAS is about 10 mph (16 kph). That may seem slow, but it's about 5 times faster than the original Mayflower, which took 66 days to make the journey.

【1】What is the main mission of the MAS project?

A.Take more Europeans across the Atlantic.

B.Explore the ocean with high technologies.

C.Develop new artificial intelligence system.

D.Test the new robotic ship of IBM on the sea.

【2】What happened to the MAS on the sea?

A.There was something wrong with the AI Captain.

B.The scientists failed to guide the ship completely.

C.The ship couldn't reach its destination as planned.

D.The robotic ship's electric motor didn't work well.

【3】What can we know from the last paragraph?

A.The robotic ship will set sail again soon.

B.The journey will be difficult and dangerous.

C.The entire journey will be about 2, 100 miles.

D.The MAS will travel farther than the original one.

【4】What's the best title for the text?

A.A Robotic Ship Guided by the AI Captain System.

B.Self-Driving Mayflower Ship Forced to Turn Back.

C.The Fastest Robotic Ship Sailing Across the Atlantic.

D.Another Mayflower Recreating the Cross-Atlantic Trip.

24、One of the healthiest Foods on the planet

There is probably no flower more hated, or misunderstood, than the bright yellow dandelion (蒲公英). 1 In an effort to have the perfect green grass lawn, people try their best to kill all dandelions with chemical products. Or they dig them out at the roots—only to see them grow right back.

2 They are a great source of vitamin K and also are a good source of vitamins A and C. They also have vitamin E, folate and small amounts of other B vitamins. Also, they provide lots of iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Besides nutrition, another great thing about dandelions is that you can eat every part of them—from the bottom of the roots to the top of the flower. 3 Do not eat ones that have been treated with dangerous chemicals or are growing near high traffic areas.

Dandelions are said to provide several possible health benefits such as helping in digestion and improving some skin conditions. They may also reduce inflammation (炎症).

Children in many parts of the world have had the simple pleasure of blowing the soft, white dandelion tops. 4 In fact, there is a game children play with dandelions that have gone to seed. Pick the white top, make a wish, close your eyes and blow! If you blow all of the seeds off in one breath, your wish will come true! 5

A. Well, that is what many children believe.

B. They watch the seeds float easily in the air.

C. At least the seeds have traveled far and wide.

D. Just make sure to take care when picking wild dandelions.

E. You can let more of this nutritious food source continue to grow.

F. Dandelions are actually one of the most nutritious foods in the world.

G. In the United States, they are considered “weeds”, the name for any unwanted plant.
