21、Credit card debts, loans and overdrawn (透支) accounts — these are costly mistakes you don’t want your children to make when they grow up. 【1】 According to Mylene Lopa, a chief marketing officer of Sun Life Financial, you should teach your kids about money as early as possible. Start simple and expose them to the following basic concepts.
Spending
Giving your children some pocket money is a good way to teach them how to be responsible. “The money should just be enough to buy them a treat, like a juice or a biscuit. It’s for practice more than anything,” Mylene says. 【2】 Tell your kid he will get a reward if he saves some of that money.
Saving
【3】 They are always cute and colorful, making saving a fun and positive activity for kids. Encourage your children further by bringing them to the bank and showing them how to manage their savings themselves. It makes them feel more grown-up and they love it,” says Mylene.
Earning
For children, earning usually comes in the form of gifts they receive for good grades or behavior. 【4】 “Material rewards should be saved for even greater achievements,” Mylene advises, “like if they top the class or they really go beyond the call of duty to help.” This may let your children know making money is not so easy.
Along with these basic concepts, another way to teach kids about money is being a good example. 【5】 It’s hard to teach kids about saving if they see you splurging (挥霍) and borrowing all the time.
A.Be careful when giving them.
B.Buy your children moneyboxes.
C.Make it clear what items the money is for.
D.Set up a fund for your children when they get older.
E.Tell your children to pay a visit to the bank frequently.
F.Teaching your children about money will help them form good habits in life.
G.Avoid borrowing money from other people and use your credit card responsibly.
22、I was in my first year of college, making friends and enjoying life, but then my whole world turned upside down. I had a heart attack. It felt like someone was stabbing (刺) me in the chest with a knife over and over again.
After three months of rest I went back to college, but then things took a turn for the worse. I was staying at my Nana’s house and woke up in the middle of the night with a terrible pain in my chest. I knew I was having a heart attack again.
I couldn’t even shout for help. Luckily my grandpa was going to the toilet and heard me falling out of bed. If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t be here.
The two holes in my heart were causing the problems and I needed an operation immediately to repair them. Unfortunately, the surgery didn’t go well and they only managed to repair one of the holes.
When I woke up from the operation, I had a really dry mouth and couldn’t wait to have something to eat and drink. The biggest shock of all came when I was told that I needed a heart transplant and was put on the register. The doctors were stunned at how quickly heart failure came on – it usually takes years, but it took my heart less than six months to get to that stage. My whole world came crashing down, but I stayed strong. It was a choice between crying every day and getting on with my life.
As time went on, life became even harder. I hated feeling weak all the time and needing help with everything. It got to the point where I thought I would never get a new heart. I was diagnosed with depression.
Even though I thought that Christmas 2008 would be my last, I really enjoyed it and even had a good New Year. Everyone was crying for me when the clock struck midnight and they told me to keep fighting.
A week later, I got a call from the doctors saying they’d found a suitable donor (捐赠人). My wish came true and thankfully the operation went well. I spent four hours in surgery where they took out my old heart and put a new one in. When I woke up I burst out crying. I had a second chance at life.

24、While working in Southeast Asia in the mid 1990’s, I became a branch manager in a factory. At the beginning, I used human relations principles, such as putting myself into the others place to help gain trust. After a few months, I was told that the factory team members liked and trusted me.
Then the owner, seeing how everyone thought well of me, believed that I could become an instrument of change to carry out his several unpopular programs. The factory members resisted and eventually saw me as a puppet controlled by the owner. The more I insisted that they ‘follow orders’ the more they found ways to weaken the new changes.
Finally, I was replaced by a manager who knew enough to please both masters. Even though the owner did not like the fact that his new changes were not immediately applied, the new manager gained his power by the support received from his team together with an intention to find a way. What I learned was that your team must always see you as supportive of their needs, even to the extent that the owner may not be pleased that you are unable to follow their wishes. At the end of the day, if your people do not follow you then you are no longer in charge and will be replaced.
At first I blamed my boss for putting me in such a position. Then in honest reflection, I began to realize that he had probably hoped that I would have found some middle ground. What I could have done was to first obtain their advice about why they did not wish to follow the new policy changes, and then I should have used my influence with both the owner and team members to find a better way.
Though, in fact it is a painful lesson for me, it has served me well along my career path!

26、读后续写
Jessie had two days’leave in January this year. She surfed the Internet for cheap travel deals and found the most impressive to be a two-day trip to Dublin. Jessie had never visited Ireland so she knew this was the destination for her.
She arrived in Dublin and headed for her hotel. She was excited. When she found her hotel, she paid her money for both nights in advance. The receptionist (接待员) said that was possibly the smartest thing she had done since she decided to take the trip. Jessie dropped her bags in her room and immediately went out to check out some of the sights. It was getting late as Jessie wandered in the streets and decided that even though she was starving, she would rather wait to have dinner later after having a drink.
She headed into the closest pub. Jessie noticed a rather strange-looking man staring at her from across the room. He walked to her table and asked her in his most polite manner if she would like to have a beer. After about ten seconds of thought, Jessie came to the conclusion that she would and accepted the offer. But she proposed that she should treat him to some fruits. The man smiled and accepted.
Their conversation was mainly about places they had been and places they wanted to go. Jessie soon found out that he was traveling alone too and as soon as he started mentioning that he was staying in the same hotel as her, Jessie swiftly rose from her seat to get another drink.
Searching through her bag Jessie found that her wallet was gone! Immediately she realized she took the wrong bag. Her wallet was in another bag. Jessie didn’t panic at first until it hit her that without it, she had not one penny in hand. She was starving. Worst of all, she had generously proposed a treat to the man.
