二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Max Woosey, an l1-year-old from the United Kingdom, has spent his time during COVID-19 doing something pretty meaningful. He slept in a tent for over 500 nights in a row. And he did this not only because he loves the outdoors but in service to others.

Max’s father is a Royal Marine (皇家海军陆战队员), so he has courage and love for outdoor activities in his blood. Max’s family was looking after their neighbor, Rick, who was dying of cancer. Before Rick passed away he gave Max a tent and had him promise to have an adventure.

So, after Rick died, Max had an idea. He decided to raise money for Devon Hospice (救济院) , which cared for Rick in his final days. When the first lockdown happened, Max had realized that much of the hospice’s fundraising (筹资) also came to a stop. But outside the hospice, a number of people were waiting for help. So Max set a goal to raise 100 pounds by camping out in his front garden.

On March 29th, 2020, Max started his camping adventure in, Rick’s tent. As he passed hundreds of days camping out, he attracted national attention from the media and even the Prime Minister, who later paid him a visit. More people have donated to Devon Hospice.

Now, 500 days later, he is still camping! Through storms, rain, high winds and cold, he stuck to it. The lessons his dad taught him from the Royal Marines, to never give up, show kindness, honesty and try hard helped support him in tough times.

In all, Max has raised more than 750 000 pounds for Devon Hospice! This made up for about half of the donations they had lost for the year! Max even organized a huge camp at his school playground to show people what children can achieve if they all work together.

22、Robotic scientists say that one-year-old human babies have better movement skills than robots do. Let's take a look at some tasks that are easy for you but tough for robots.

Pick things up

Picking things up is not easy. If we drop our pencil on the floor, our brains work hard. First, we must find the pencil and look at its distance. Then we move our hands to it. A robot cannot always move its "hand" to the right place. Calculating the distance is not easy. Then, when we touch the pencil, it might roll a little bit. Robots cannot easily understand this either. So, if you drop a pencil on the floor, a robot will probably roll it around the room.

Get around spaces

If someone drops you in a building you've never been to, you might feel a bit lost. But you can look around, find a door and get out quickly. You will not get stuck in a corner. But a robot will look everywhere for a door, even on ceilings and floors. This is because it's hard for them to understand spaces.

Understand the world made by people

"Common sense" is what we don't need to think or talk about. Because of common sense, we pick up a coffee cup by its handle. We feel whether it has coffee inside, and whether it is hot.

But robots may turn the cup upside down or hold the hot part of the cup, damaging itself. Scientists have tried teaching robots common-sense rules. But even huge databases don't help much. There are just too many rules—and too many exceptions. Maybe they just need more time to learn.

【1】Why is it difficult for a robot to pick things up?

A.It cannot locate where the thing is.

B.Its hands cannot move far enough

C.It likes to roll things around the room

D.It has difficulty working out the exact distance.

【2】What do robots tend to do when they are trapped in a corner?

A.Ask for help.

B.Go to a door and get out.

C.Look for doors aimlessly.

D.Wait for others to help.

【3】What is the author's purpose in writing the article?

A.To show robots have their own limitations.

B.To describe how robots help improve our lives.

C.To explain the importance of the database to robots

D.To introduce in what areas robots will be applied.

23、The pursuit of longevity has long been on people’s minds, prompting an abundance of research on the effects of food and diet on the human lifespan. According to recent research from the UC Irvine Institute, drinking coffee and wine could help you live longer.

The 90+ Study evaluated more than 1,600 people over the age of 90 for their lifestyle habits and other qualities that might have contributed to their longevity.

Participants were visited every six months, when they were given various tests. Researchers also collected information about the participants’ diets, lifestyles, and medical histories.

They found out that two of the habits that helped preserve lives the most are drinking alcohol and coffee. “I have no explanation for it,” admitted Dr Claudia Kawas, “but I do firmly believe that moderate (适度的) drinking improves longevity.” So should we all be drinking more coffee and wine? While that would be great news, the research may not be as definitive as it seems.

“Most studies about alcohol consumption, including The 90+ Study, are observational, so we  can only say that something about drinking is associated with health and longevity,” registered dietitian Jennifer Markowitz told The Daily Meal.

“I’d be curious to see if the coffee and alcohol drinkers shared other important habits or lifestyle factors that might also play into their longevity.”

In other words, it might not be the wine and coffee that’s helping people live longer, but the two substances do have some considerable health benefits. “Wine and coffee are packed with antioxidants(抗氧化剂) which are known to protect our bodies from damage caused by free radicals,” explained registered dietitian Keri Gans to The Daily Meal. “Research on antioxidants has shown several heath benefits, including the possibility they may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, improve cognitive function, decrease the risk of dementia, and lower the risk of heart disease.”

Moderate drinking can be beneficial according to other studies—so long as it’s moderate.

1What’s the passage mainly about?

A.Antioxidants having a positive effect on the lifespan.

B.The effects of food and diet on the human lifespan.

C.Advocating drinking wine and coffee in our daily life.

D.Moderate drinking helping people live longer.

2The information was collected about the participants in the 90+ Study except ________.

A.food consumption

B.lifestyle

C.hobbies

D.medical history

3How can the wine and coffee benefit people’s health?

A.They provide people with essential nutrition.

B.They are rich in antioxidants.

C.They protect free radicals in human bodies.

D.They can bring relief to pain.

4What can we infer from the passage?

A.Not all the people participating in the study are over 90.

B.Most studies about alcohol consumption are based on observation.

C.Over-drinking can also be beneficial according to other studies.

D.Antioxidants can cure type 2 diabetes.

24、Sports performance can be influenced by many different things. 【1】

There are many physical factors(因素)that play a part in sports performance. 【2】 The natural talent and strength of the players will make a difference. Also,it is important to get enough sleep before you are in a sports event. 【3】 Eating good meals is also important. When you are hungry, you cannot perform the same. You might be thinking about food when you should be thinking about the game.

of course, the more a team or a player practices, the more likely they are to perform well. The same person with the same physical abilities might just become better as he practices.

Researching your competitor can matter a lot in sports performance. Knowing their strengths and weaknesses can help you adjust how you play to give yourself a better performance against them. 【4】 If you can figure out where to hit the ball in tennis that would confuse your competitor, for example, then this can help you score points.

【5】 If someone is very pessimistic about a game, for example, and is sure that he will lose, then he might increase his chances of doing so. If he is very nervous then he might be thinking about that instead of focusing on the game. If he is focused then he might do better, achieving what he didn't even realize he could. His confidence can also affect how the other team views him.

A.It is important to be aware of these factors.

B.It is necessary to get to know your competitor and yourself.

C.Also, there are ways to play something smartly and do better.

D.If you are tired, you may not perform as you normally would. ools1
