二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、   Not exactly, but Dr. Joseph Bell, the man who inspired the character of Sherlock Holmes, shared many qualities with the famous detective. Arthur Conan Doyle, the writer and creator of Holmes, met Dr. Bell in 1877 at the University of Edinburgh Medical School. Conan Doyle was studying to be a doctor and Bell was one of his professor.

Bell was 39 years old when Conan Doyle first attended one of his lectures. He is said to have walked with great energy. His nose and chin were angular and his eyes twinkled with intelligent humor. Bell, who was a brilliant doctor, liked writing poetry, playing sport and bird-watching.

By the end of Conan Doyle’s second year, Bell had selected him to serve as his assistant. Being on award with Bell, where he had plenty of opportunity to observe, only increased Conan Dovle’s admiration for the great doctor. Amongst other things he was able to witness Dr. Bell’s remarkable ability to quickly deduce (推断) a great deal about the patient.

Dr. Bell observed the way a person moved. The walk of a sailor, who had spent many years at sea, varied greatly from that of a soldier. If he identified a personas a sailor, he would look for any tattoos (纹身) that might assist him in knowing where their travels had taken them. He trained himself to listen differences in his patients accents to help him identify where they were from. Bell studied the hands of his patients because calluses (老茧) or other marks could help him determine their occupation.

Conan Doyle published the first Ho lanes story in 1887. His innovation in creating a character that would appear over and over in a series of self-contained stories meant that Holmes s popularity grew with each book. Perhaps the most famous was The Hound of the Baskervilies, which has been made into several films. Soon the character was so beloved that people refused to believe he wasn’t a real person: letters addressed to “Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective” arrived daily at Baker Street and Scotland Yard, each begging him take on a real case.

27、It may seem as if Mother's Day was invented by a company named Hallmark, but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to Mom for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals — although their celebrations didn't involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner. A more recent tradition wasMothering Sunday, which developed in the British Isles during the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday in April, young men and women who were living and working apart from their families were advised to return to their mothers’ houses.

Mother's Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginia woman who held “Mothers' Work Days” to promote health and hygiene(卫生) at home and in the workplace. During the Civil War, Jarvis organized women to improve sanitary conditions for soldiers on both sides, and after the war she became a peacemaker, furthering the cause by bringing together mothers of Union and Confederate soldiers and promoting a Mother's Day holiday.

Jarvis's work inspired another 19th-century woman, Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 Howe published her “Mother's Day Proclamation”, which envisioned the day not as appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace. Howe started holding annual Mother's Day celebrations in Boston, her hometown, but after about a decade she stopped footing the bill and the tradition faded away.

It was Jarvis's daughter Anna who succeeded in getting Mother’s Day recognized as a national holiday. After her mother died, in May 1905, Anna started holding yearly ceremony on the anniversary and conducting a tireless PR campaign to have the day made a holiday. In 1908 she succeeded in enlisting the support of John W anamaker, the Philadelphia department store magnate and advertising pioneer, and by 1912 West Virginia and a few other states had adopted Mother's Day. Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday.

It wasn't long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy. By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating. “I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit,” she said.

28、At the age of 95, Olga Kotelko attracted great attention at the World Masters Athletics Championships. This 5ft-tall Canadian became the oldest recorded woman indoor runner, high jumper and long jumper at the competition.

Olga now has more than 30 world records to her name and has won more than 750 gold medals. But she sees herself as nothing special, describing herself as just a plain Jane. As one of 11 children brought up on a farm, she has always been active, milking cows and doing other housework.

She has now outlived all her brothers and sisters and most of her friends but when asked what her secret is, she says there isn’t one. “I think your age is just a number. It’s not your birthday; it’s how you age that makes the difference. It’s your attitude to all the things that happen in your life that plays the biggest part.”

So can we all turn ourselves into nonagenarian (九十多岁的) superheroes? Research from Newcastle University suggests that as every 24 hours pass, we add an extra five hours to our lives that’s over 2 months each year—partly because of improving living conditions and medical development. And in the UK the number of people who are living into their 100th year has nearly increased by four times since the 1980s. So ageing is not a terrible thing.

While Olga’s genes (基因) might help her, we’re not all prisoners to our own. After all, 75% of our later lives could be down to the lifestyle we choose to lead. A good diet (饮食) and regular exercise are key. Besides, developing friendships in mid-life also works. Dr Holland, director of Aston University’s research centre for healthy ageing, says: “The more friends you have when you’re 50-60 years old, the less likely you’re to be lonely in later life; the less lonely you are, the less likely you’re to be ill as the years go by.”

29、“Going after the footprints of wild animals, you can see the most beautiful scenery in the world. You can see the other side of the world, full of strength, wildness and tenderness,” said Xi Zhinong about being a wildlife photographer.

In 1983, 19-year-old Xi had an opportunity to take part in shooting a film about wild birds. At the time, people didn’t know how to photograph these birds without disturbing them. Crews used to catch the birds, tie their legs with ropes and then put them back on tree branches for shooting. Xi thought the birds captured this way had no life. Instead, he set out to learn how to photograph and film birds while they were in flight. The more Xi filmed, the more he saw the cruelty of animals killing. Xi thought he should do more to help protect the wildlife, as focusing on birds was far from enough.

In 1992, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) launched a three-year research project focused on black snub-nosed monkeys, an endangered species in southwest China’s Yunnan Province, Xi’s hometown. Xi followed the researchers to reach the forests at 4,000 meters above sea level. He became the first to film these striking monkeys in the wild. After years of effort, Xi’s documentary film “Mystery Yunnan Snub-Nosed Monkey” won several international awards, including the TVE award at England’s Wildscreen Festival in 2002.

Xi not only films endangered species, but has also taken on the mission of raising awareness for the protection of wild animals and their homes by giving lectures in cities throughout the country.

Now, he owns a studio “Wild China Film” and uses his images to preserve nature. “I hope to demonstrate the most vivid and realistic scenery to the public. I wish natural reserves can be found everywhere in China, but the most important thing is that these reserves are impressed upon in the minds of everybody,” Xi noted.

四、短文填空(共1题,共 5分)

31、Vocabulary

When I succeeded in becoming a part-time employee of Nokia China last summer, many friends asked me how I survived the interview.

I once asked myself the same questions. Many of my peers(平辈) also 1 for the job, including some very competitive and intelligent students from famous universities.

But why did the interviewer pick me instead of them?

Finally, 2 pushed me to ask the interviewers after we became colleagues. The answer was that I appeared confident but humble, responsible and communicative. They evaluated people not just on their academic certificates, but on the base of their 3 and abilities. I happened to be the right person.

To be frank, I once felt 4 of being a student from an unknown college, and I think this may apply to some of you. I thought my future was ruined. It was only at the time of my successful interview that I finally understood the famous saying --- “You decide where you go.”

A wide range of skills is important these days. I used to work for Master Kong. My job was to cook instant noodles for customers. I had 5 it as a piece of cake, but I failed constantly. I had to cook the noodles for the right amount of time to make them taste good. Moreover, the noodles could only remain in a plastic cup of five minutes, or the taste would be 6.

This experience taught me never to look 7 on anything, and always remain humble.

I also worked as a volunteer for a beach volleyball event. My job was to help foreign visitors experience the beach. I thought it would be very easy because my oral English was 8 good. But when I went to talk with a group of foreign guests, I suddenly realized that I did not know a single beach volleyball term. I was embarrassed.

After this, I read notebooks in both Chinese and English every day to learn the terms for facilities and related words. This allowed me to deliver right 9 to foreigners, and I was happy to work responsibly.

After these experience, I’m more confident and I strongly believe that my fate is in my 10. It has certainly helped me make a giant step closer to my dream of graduating with prospects for the future. I hope my advice will benefit you as well.

五、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Aly wandered toward the garden, where Miss Strawbridge, the landlady, was planting flowers. Last week, Aly and her parents had moved into the house in Miss Strawbridge’s backyard.

Aly watched silently until the old woman looked up and asked, “Why the long face, Aly?” “There aren’t any kids around here to play with.” said Aly. Miss Strawbridge’s blued eyes twinkled. “You should just like Rachel who used to live here.” said Miss Strawbridge. “Too bad you two young girls couldn’t have lived here at the same time.”

“What did Rachel do when she was bored?” asked Aly. “She planted a flower garden by the shed (棚子) in the backyard.” answered Miss Strawbridge. Miss Strawbridge handed Aly a trowel (铲子) and held out a box of flowers. For the rest of the afternoon, Aly pulled the weeds, dug and planted. But when she stepped back and admired her blue and yellow flowers, she smiled. Still, it was too bad that Rachel wasn’t there to share it.

The next day, Aly watered her flowers, then wondered what else she could do. She walked across the yard to the garden, where Miss   Strawbridge sat reading. She stood silently until the old woman looked up. “What else did Rachel do when she was bored?” asked Aly. “She wrote poetry in her flower garden.” Miss Strawbridge answered. “One of her poem even won the first prize in a contest at school. The best way to learn how to write poetry is to read poetry.” She handed Aly her book.

For the rest of the afternoon, Aly lay on her stomach in the cool grass next to her flowers and read Miss Strawbridge’s book of poetry. After a while, she got some paper and a pencil from her house and scribbled (乱写) and erased. In the end she had a poem that might not be a prize winner but sounded good enough to make her smile. Still, it was too bad that Rachel wasn’t there. They could have read their poems to each other.

The next day, Aly watered her flowers, then wondered what else she could do. She rushed across the yard and knocked on Miss Strawbridge’s door. “What else did Rachel do when she was bored?” Asked Aly when Miss Strawbridge opened the door. “She played in the old shed and pretended it was her house.” Answered Miss Strawbridge.

Aly glanced back at the shed and then at Miss Strawbridge, Miss Strawbridge twinkled. “There’s nothing in the shed that you can hurt or that can hurt you.” She took a key off a hook next to the door and handed it to Aly.

She raced back into the shed, only to find a few chairs and boxes resting on the dusty shelves.
