二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、It is now February 7, 2035. The search engine TalkTalk will be open to the public next week and this service will soon be something beyond your imagination. For the first time you can not only talk to the search engine, but you can discuss with it what you are looking for.

For example, if you want to know more about the oil price, TalkTalk asks if you want to know the current oil price, the development of the oil price, or news related to the oil price. You say that you want to read news about it and TalkTalk then directs you to your source, or lets you have the latest news related to the oil price in order from the most respectable sources.

Compared with other search services that use a certain algorithm (程序) to provide data from a search, the artificial intelligence (人工智能) behind TalkTalk is said to easily spot if a certain source is aiming to cheat the searcher. TalkTalk also judges and stores every given reply and discussion, to learn how to give correct answers. TalkTalk is also set to answer questions directly where there is a definite answer. How well this will work in the long run is yet to be seen, but thousands of people have tested TalkTalk and the quality is really good.

The first talking search engine saw the light of day more than 30 years ago and was called Speegle. It could read the results from a written search on the Internet, and was mostly for blind people.

So far, TalkTalk cannot read the information from a certain source to you by phone, if it is not freely available. There are currently talks to find an arrangement for this, but it would most likely be difficult because of copyright(版权).

TalkTalk is available over the Internet and also by phone, even though it only speaks English. There are no plans to add other languages in the near future, most likely because it will cost a lot of money. When you are tired of asking TalkTalk all your questions, just ask, “Where is TalkTalk?” and you will get an answer that will make you leave it with a smile on your lips.

A. how to use the search engine TalkTalk

A. Hello, TalkTalk

B. Where is TalkTalk

C. Lifestyle. D. Technology.

27、   People eat more when they are glued to the television, and the more entertaining the program, the more they eat, according to a new research.

It seems that distracted(分心的)brains do not notice what the mouth is doing, said Dr Alan Hirsch, neurological director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago. Hirsch explored the effect of smell, taste and eating behaviors while watching TV by measuring the number of potato chip eaten.

Forty-five volunteers ate as many chips as they wanted while they watched programs by late- night talk show hosts David Letterman and Jay Leno. They were also given chips to eat when the television was off. Hirsh found people ate an average of 44 percent more chips while watching Letterman and 42 percent more while viewing Leno, than when they did not watch TV.

“If you can concentrate on how the food tastes you’ll eat less because you’ll feel full faster,” Hirsch said in an interview all the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in Toronto. “So if that’s the case, let’s look at the opposite. What if you’re distracted? If you’re distracted, in theory then , eat more.”

Through his research at the foundation, Hirsch has helped people overcome the loss of sense and taste sensation, which typically results in weight gain became the brain does not know when it should stop eating.

The ventromedial nucleus(腹内侧核)in the hypothalamus(丘脑下部)where the so-called satiety (饱足)center is located, tells the body whether it is hungry or full. If it is stopped tricked the result can be changed in eating patterns, he said,“People who cook spaghetti all day don’t feel like eating spaghetti at the end of the day,” said Hirsch. “By being exposed to a smell all day long it’s tricking the hypothalamus.”

Volunteers were asked to concentrate on the sensory characteristics of the food such as taste and smell. Researchers say these sensory taste and smell, in addition to internal body changes, signal satiety. But when distracted, a person does not pay attention to either the body’s sensations of feeling full, or to the sensory characteristics of the food.

Many studies have linked obesity to watching television and that link is likely due to inactivity. But perhaps entertaining shows are also contributing. “If you want to lose weight, turn off the television or watch something boring,” Hirsch said.

1What does the underlined word “glued to” in Para. l mean?

A.away from B.performing in C.close to D.lost in

2How did Hirsch carry out the research?

A.By watching people eat. B.By interviewing people.

C.By counting how many chips people eat. D.By observing how people watch television.

3What do Hirsch’s words in Para.6 mean?

A.They think spaghetti unhealthy. B.They have smelt spaghetti enough.

C.They don’t like eating spaghetti. D.Spaghetti has affected the hypothalamus.

4What do we know from Hirsch’s study?

A.Inactivity is likely to make people fat.

B.Entertaining shows are the main causes of obesity.

C.The more concentration on food taste, the less you’ll eat.

D.The ventromedial nucleus can tell whether one is hungry or full.

5What’s the main idea of this passage?

A.People eat more when watching TV. B.It is not good for our health to eat chips.

C.People enjoy eating while watching TV. D.How people can enjoy the TV programs.

28、Making a Good First Impression

It's important to make a good first impression with people. Whether they're a customer or a potential friend, you want them to think highly of you. If they don't, you're not likely to make much progress moving forward. 1 Before you've even opened your mouth, people have already formed an opinion of you based on your body language. With that in mind, it's a good idea to change how you present yourself to ensure you're not giving off a bad atmosphere.

♦ It's all in the face.

Any honest and fair person is going to be looking at your face when you're talking to them. Of course, that means whatever is going on up there will be picked apart more than anything else you do. 2 In the right circumstances, it will express warmth and show you to be welcoming, something that's unbelievably important for the first impression. Moreover, make sure to keep eye contact as often as possible It shows that you're focusing on them, especially when they're talking.

3

So many of us close our arms without thinking about itbut that's one of the biggest no-nos when it comes to first impressions. Standing there with your arms folded is going to set you apart from the crowd for all the wrong reasons. 4 This will drive people away from you very quickly and make a poor first impression.

♦ Show your interest.

5 The wrong movements or positions can signal that you don't care what the other person has to say. Fortunately, there are non-verbal cues (暗示)you can make which will show your interest without going overboard. These include things like leaning forward and giving purposeful nods. Small gestures like this show that you're taking part in the conversation and not invested (投入的)in something happening over their shoulder.

A.Open up your body.

B.Stand close to others in conversation.

C.Show your interest when others are talking.

D.However, there's more to the first impression than what you say.

E.Body language shows whether you're interested in someone or not.

F.It gives people the impression that you're bored and don't want to be there.

G.Make sure that you smile as often as possible if it's acceptable in the situation.
