Do you or someone you know use a mobile phone? In today’s world, many people use a mobile phone especially businessmen and businesswomen. These people are an important part of the business world and help our economies develop. In fact in some countries even children and the elderly use mobile phones to keep in touch with family and friends. We know how useful it is to have a mobile phone, but do we know how safe these phones are? Some scientists say that mobile phones could be a risk to our health. So, money is being given to scientific re search to find out if mobile phones may be harmful in any way.
What does the future look like? Is a hands - free phone the an swer? The idea behind hands - free sets is simple and maybe they are a safer way for people to communicate. The hands - free set has a piece in your ear and a microphone near your mouth which is con nected to a wire that goes into your phone. Some scientists think this is a much safer way to use a phone. Some scientists have proved that a mobile phone 10 centimeters from your head is far safer than if the headset is right against your ear. Some reports say that hands - free sets have 95% less radiation exposure, while other reports say that hands - free sets expose you to more radiation. Governments and the mobile phone industry are researching the effects, including:
● the effects of radio waves on blood pressure and the brain, such as the abilities to concentrate, remember and learn the connections between mobile phone use and brain cancer long - term effects of mobile phone use, looking at health histories of people who have used mobiles since the 1980s. They will be looking at both current mobile phones and the new generation of 4G phones. The results from these studies will help us understand more about the world beyond mobile communications. 26、Picture the scene: It’s midnight. You’re very hungry after studying for a long time. Then you see a nice pie in the fridge. Do you eat it? It seems that you shouldn’t, for many reasons, including its influence on your studies.
Scientists have long known that eating late at night can make us gain weight. But now a new study has shown that late-night eating can also have a bad influence on our brains — it might hurt our ability to learn new things and store memories.
“We believe that late-night eating may affect (影响) our learning by affecting the parts of the brain that control learning and memory,” Dawn Loh, PhD, a project scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, said, “We believe the timing of when we eat is the main cause of the damaged (受损的) memory.”
For the study, the researchers looked at mice with strict feeding plans. For two weeks, the mice were either allowed to eat during the time when they are usually the most active, or during the time when they usually sleep. The mice received the same amount(数量) of sleep and calories.
Then the researchers tested the brains of the mice. In one test, the researchers tried to find out whether the mice could remember that a room was connected to an electric shock(电击) after 24 hours had gone by.
The researchers noticed that, when the mice were put in the room again, those mice that ate when they should have been sleeping were less likely(可能的) to get scared than those mice that ate during usual hours. It means that they didn’t remember.
So think twice before the midnight snack — it might be bad for more than your weight.

Music has always been an important part of Chinese people’s life. People enjoy listening to music at home and in concerts halls. As time goes by, music changes.
Traditional music is part of our culture, so it often stays with us for a long time. Many of the traditional Chinese songs have been around for many years. Young musicians learn songs from older musicians and the music changes only very little. Modern Chinese music, which is loved by many young people, however, is mainly pop music. That means the songs will be popular for a short time and then replaced by new songs. Today’s musicians write new songs every year and we hear new songs on the radio every day.
Before radio and TV were invented, music could only be heard live — that is you had to go places where musicians gave performances. The best musicians were very busy, so it was difficult and often expensive to hear really good music. For most people, the best chance to hear good music was during a festival or at a wedding. Today, people hear music all the time. Radio and TV play songs every day and night and you can even hear music played on the street.
One thing that hasn’t changed very much is what the songs are about. Both modern and traditional Chinese songs are about love and life. Some songs tell stories about past and some are about the news or the future. All of the songs have something to do with what it means to be a human being.
Music, traditional or modern, Chinese or international, seems to be a world language that everybody can understand and enjoy. Music changes and styles come and go, but nothing changes our love for good music.
