二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Ever walked to the shops only to find, once there, you’ve completely forgotten what you went for? Or struggled to remember the name of an old friend? For years we’ve accepted that a forgetful brain is as much a part of aging as wrinkles and gray hair. But now a new book suggests that we’ve got it all wrong.

According to The Secret Life of the Grown-up Brain, by science writer Barbara Strauch, when it comes to the important things, our brains actually get better with age. In fact, she argues that some studies have found that our brain hits its peak between our 40s and 60s — much later than previously thought.

Furthermore, rather than losing many brain cells as we age, we keep them, and even produce new ones well into middle age. For years it’s been assumed that brain, much like the body, declines with age. But the longest, largest study into what happens to people as they age suggests otherwise.

This continuing research has followed 6,000 people since 1956, testing them every seven years. It has found that on average, participants performed better on cognitive (认知的) tests in their 40s and 50s than they had done in their 20s. Specifically, older people did better on tests of vocabulary, verbal memory (how many words you can remember) and problem solving. Where they performed less well was number ability and perceptual speed — how fast you can push a button when ordered. However, with more complex tasks such as problem-solving and language, we are at our best at middle age and beyond. In short, researchers are now coming up with scientific proof that we do get wiser with age.

Neuroscientists are also finding that we are happier with aging. A recent US study found older people were much better at controlling and balancing their emotions. It is thought that when we’re younger we need to focus more on the negative aspects of life in order to learn about the possible dangers in the world, but as we get older we’ve learned our lessons and are aware that we have less time left in life: therefore, it becomes more important for us to be happy.

22、In the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, educators across Qatar Foundation (QF) have found creative ways to take advantage of the global sporting event in the classroom to teach both physical and social skills, and to bring their lesson plans to life.

“Apart from encouraging them to take part in the physical aspect of the game, it’s a perfect opportunity to teach social skills, such as team spirit, fair play, respect for rules, cooperation, discipline and tolerance, etc. These are all essential skills for future participation in group activities and professional life,” explained Sara Hal Hajri, assistant director of QF.

The topics include learning about the event, the sport of football, stadiums and how they link to Qatari culture and heritage, and the positive impact the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will have on the local community, etc. Classes will also be designing and creating a sustainable football in honor of the landmark year.

At the heart of the activities are friendly football matches organized to simulate the match experience where students will engage as either football players or audience. They will create cheers for their favourite team, use a match ticket, and purchase refreshments to mirror the experience at a match.

Football in Qatar Academy Sidra (QAS), a QF school, has been included in the curriculum across the age groups to teach subjects like geography, art writing, math and others in creative ways. For example, Grade 4 students are using maps to determine the distances between stadiums while Grades 11 and 12 engage in redesigning the FIFA World Cup using recycled materials.

Fatima Saad Mohannadi, a Grade 10 student from QAS said, “Everyone is pumped up about the World Cup-it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and there are so many activities being linked to it. 23、As a dropout myself, I often feel it is my duty to defend my fellow non-scholars. Common wisdom would have you believe we are the “bad kids", the future criminals, the worst sort of people. But not all dropouts are likely to deal drugs, steal goods from a shop, or shoot pool all day.

My own favorite place to go when skipping school was always the public library. My early retirement meant that at last I had the time to read everything I wanted to. I found reading Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow a lot more interesting than reading about Sir Isaac Newton and the falling apple.

Best of all was the time I finally had to myself. I felt liberated. I had been in school nearly my whole life. I wanted to find out for myself who I was,and until I did, everything else felt like a waste of time.

However, after nearly three years, a series of strange thoughts began to make me anxious and unsure. Images of myself at the age of 35 began to haunt(缠扰)me in my sleep. And a voice in my head began asking over and over,"Who is paying the hot water bills? Who buys the microwave pizza?"The answer, of course, was my poor old parents. Sure,I was having an enjoyable time doing plenty of nothing, discovering myself and all, but that's unfair to them. What parents long to see their child drop out of school, with no plans for the future? Could they be expected to support me forever? Certainly not. I immediately moved out of the house and out of town, in search of a future for myself.

And it is here, in my new home of San Francisco, that I have decided to do what was once unthinkable: go back to school. I plan to take adult education classes and then apply for City College. On the one hand, I can hardly believe I'm doing it: a return to desks, chalkboards, and clocks that tell you when to stop thinking about one thing and start thinking about another. But at City College, I'll be able to take film production, semiotics, and sociology—just because I want to know about them.

So next time you see a dropout, be sympathetic. And please don't push him to do something he doesn't want to do. It never works. He'll come around when he's ready.

【1】It is commonly believed that dropouts are_____.

A.bad kids from birth

B.interested in studying drugs

C.very likely to commit crimes

D.responsible for defending non-scholars

A.To fight for his own future.

A.Push them to the limit.

B.Open their hearts to them.

24、How is this virus transmitted?

This is an outbreak of disease that started in Wuhan, one of the central Chinese cities. It’s caused by a novel coronavirus that means it’s brand-new. 1

What are the symptoms?

The virus is from a family called the coronaviruses. The symptoms of this illness are pretty mundane ( 凡的) on the face of it: it’s a dry cough fever and then breathing problems. 2 However, as for the more severe cases, people have gone on to develop viral pneumonia, and all the deaths have been among those people.

3

This brand-new coronavirus came from animals, and it’s believed that the source was actually a seafood market in Wuhan, which also sells wild animals. So far all the cases have come out of Wuhan. But some people haven’t picked it up there.

Should I be panicking about this outbreak?

As we can see, older people are ending up in hospital with the virus. They’re usually over 40, and the very youngest person diagnosed is about 13 or 14 years old. So it doesn’t appear to be affecting small children.

4. Basically, their immune systems are not very strong, and they’re going to find it very hard to fight off a virus.

It’s necessary for ordinary people to wear masks and doctors should wear protective clothing.

How is this virus transmitted?

We’ve only just discovered that the new coronavirus is actually transmitted from one person to another. It was hoped at first actually that it just came from animals as all coronaviruses do.  5 .So we’ve   got people to people transmission, because the market has been closed for sometime, and there are cases in people who’ve never been near it.

A.It seems quite mild in lots of people.

B.Where have cases been confirmed so far?

C.It is so new that actually it doesn’t have a name yet.

D.People diagnosed with viral pneumonia will die.

E.It is a brand-new virus so we don’t know how it’s going to behave.

F.Those confirmed cases who have died tend to have heart disease or cancer already.

G.Now it looks as though it is actually passed from one human being to another, however.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Early in 1999, our family had to drive several hundred miles to Billings, Montana, to visit a hospitalized family member. Between our travel, accommodation, and having given most of our available cash to help our relatives out with expenses, we had very little money with us when we left to return home. It was getting dark when we drove out of Billings.

At first, we didn’t notice that our headlights were dimming(变暗), and that was probably why we missed the exit for the interstate(州际公路) leading home. About 40 miles later, we began to see that nothing along the highway was familiar to us. In 35 more miles, we saw an exit to a town that wasn’t anywhere near where we were supposed to be.

With eight miles to the next exit, we began to realize the headlights were dangerously dim. The car began to make a series of short explosive sounds, which made us feel extremely worried. I had to turn off the lights to keep it running. At the foot of the exit slope, there was a small post office in front of us. The car stopped running completely as we pulled into the parking lot.

I soon determined that there was something wrong with the alternator (发电机). It was 7:00 in the evening and we were in Rosebud, Montana, which was a tiny town with no services. To make things worse, the heavy snow was falling. We needed to find our family a safe place to spend the cold night and find an alternator to fix the car the next morning. Hopelessly, we couldn’t see any other buildings around us, and the rest of the town was nearly a mile away. Even if we walked there, we knew that there was probably no hotel or parts store.
